MANUSCRIPTS - LOUIS-JOSEPH XAVIER FRANÇOIS (Dauphin of France) - Office de l'Église - 18th C. (1792 [i. e. 1783]) - CXXXII, [5, 1 br.] p.; 205 mm - E.
Calligraphed and illuminated manuscript, executed expressly for Louis-Joseph Xavier François (1781-1789), eldest son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette of France, Dauphin of France, elder brother of Louis XVII. As a result of the French Revolution and the premature death of the Dauphin (at the age of seven), the document never reached his hands and the royal symbols were removed from the binding. On the back of the title page (with only the title: «Office de l’Église»), it presents the following justification: «Exemplaire unique, écrit et décoré en or par Goblet, Maître d’Ecriture expert. 1792. A Paris...». At the end, a «Prospectus: Livre d’Heures» with a detailed description of the document, in which we can see that the copy was amputated, certainly for political reasons, of its original frontispiece (f. 2) which contained the indication «...à l’usage de Monseigneur le Dauphin». The same complementary text contains information that the manuscript was produced in the year 1783 and not in 1792. In fact, through a more detailed analysis of the justification date, it can be seen that the original date of 1783 was changed to 1792 by replacing the last two digits. The manuscript, calligraphed in bastard script in five colours (rouge, carmin, bleu d’outremer, vert et or), features the following illuminated decorative elements: all text pages framed by a double frame in gold and one colour; 21 small initials (± 17 mm); 25 average initials (±32 mm); six historiated capitulars (± 46 mm); three bars with initials, in height; five large vignettes across the width of the page; three end-of-page florets; other smaller elements. Contemporary binding, entirely in “vieux rouge” morocco, with blue silk endpapers, rolls on the squares and gilt edges.
