MANUSCRIPTS.- D. SEBASTIÃO, King of Portugal.- Sentence (public-form).- 16th century (1572).- 14 f.; 320 x 220 mm. Manuscript on parchment (14-page section), in hybrid Gothic cursive and cancelleresque script. Public form ordered by the Civil Court Judge of Lisbon, the Graduate Lourenço Marques, at the request of Marçal Faleiro, servant of D. Diogo da Silveira, Count of Sortelha, of the King's Council and Chief of the King's Guard , of a sentence of King D. Sebastião, dated June 6, 1571. The original action was brought by the attorney of the Pontifical Table of the Archbishop of Évora against the tenants of the Pedra Alçada estate, regarding the payment of tithes, with the vicar general, in the first instance, having decided against the defendants. They contested this claim, claiming that they had leased the estate from D. Diogo da Silveira, who was, by a brief from Pope Julius III (translated into Latin on folios 4v to 6r), exempt from paying tithes on the grass. The final sentence given by Joane Mendes da Fraga, canon of the Cathedral of Guarda and auditor of the legacy cases of Cardinal Infante, who decided in favour of the defendants. Autographed signature and public sign of Vicente Lourenço, public notary of the Judicial Court for the King in Lisbon and its terms. Provenance: private collection.
