Henry l'Évêque (1769-1832), painter, miniaturist, watercolorist and above all engraver, born in Geneva, was part of a group of artists who, following the French Revolution, roamed Europe accompanying the armies in campaign, recording for the posterity the most famous battles of the Napoleonic wars. Complete copy, consisting of a title page, a portrait of Wellington, next to the title page (To His Most Excellent Magesty the Emperor of All the Russias, this portrait of Field Marshal His Grace the Duke of Wellington..., dated 1814), two preliminary sheets (author's dedication to Wellington, and list of subscribers), one sheet with a description of the Prince Regent's departure to Brazil, in 1807, and respective engraving, 18 text pages (numbered) with descriptions of the 17 engravings found at the end of the volume. The 17 large-format (41x57 cm) copperplate prints (numbered) represent scenes of battles and troop movements during the Peninsular War. Recent binding, fully shagreen (probably from the Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Foundation Workshops), with gilt ornamental borders, closed panels on the spine and roll on the squares; protective case. The Book of Common Prayer is the Anglican Church's daily and Sunday prayer book, the original and definitive edition of which was published in 1549, during the reign of Edward VI. The present edition, which results from the reform implemented in 1662, includes the daily morning, afternoon, Communion prayers and the litany; it also includes prayers to accompany special services, namely Baptism, Confirmation, weddings, funeral services, prayers for the sick, etc., as well as various readings from the Old and New Testaments. Engraved and trimmed title, mirrored and flawed in the upper left corner, with little loss of image. The copy (slightly handled, but complete) is especially notable for probably having been bound by the London bookbinder Samuel Mearne (1624-1683), for the royal couple Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza, bearing the crowned royal monogram, with two interlaced Cs (one inverted), gilt engraved on the covers (4) and on the spine, on the sections (6). In this regard, see: Database of Bookbindings British Library (https://www.bl.uk/catalogues/bookbindings/Results.aspx?SearchType=QuickSearch, accessed February 2022). Provenance: bookmark armory of Alexander Duff, Duke of Fife (1849-1912) who married in 1889 Princess Louise, daughter of the Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII. Full sheepskin binding, a little worn, with weak joints, gilt edge and non-contemporary silk ties.

Original edition of one of the most important texts by the humanist scholar D. Jerónimo Osório (1506-1580), who would become the last bishop of Silves (1564-1577) and the first of the renewed diocese of the Algarve, based in Faro (1577-1580), of whom Montaigne claimed to be "le meilleur historien latin de nos siècles". The author says in the prologue that he read the Chronicle of D. Manue I by Damião de Góis "... com grande trabalho, vigilância e sagacidade". The work describes all the notable events that took place during the reign of the Venturoso, namely the voyage of Vasco da Gama, the discovery of Brazil, the events of India and Africa, all narrated with great historical accuracy. Complete copy, with light handling, preserving generous margins (308x212 mm). Title page slightly dusty, with some restorations and four old ownership marks. At least the first section appears to have been washed and repasted. Numerous underlinings, signatures and annotations from the time, or slightly later (mostly two-handed), some marred by the slight trimming; some scratches, scribbles and even marginal drawings; occasional minor stains. Full non-contemporary sheepskin binding, with new endpapers, blind stamped on the covers and gold tooling on the spine. Anselmo, 694. Samodães, 2292. LANDMANN, George.- Historical, military and picturesque observations on Portugal, illustrated by seventy-five coloured plates, including authentic plans of the sieges and battles fought in the Peninsula during the late war.- London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818.- 2 vols.: il.; 37 cm.- E.
The author (1779-1854) was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, with equal military rank in the Spanish Engineering Corps. The first volume aims to provide an overview of the history of Portugal, while the second seeks to convey a wide range of local information that may be useful, on the one hand, for military purposes, and on the other, to travelers and other readers. . The edition can be considered as one of the largest typographic companies, in its style and one of the most beautiful books in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, in the 19th century. The first volume (XIV, 607 p.) is illustrated with four hand-coloured watercolours, representing as many degrees of torture by the Inquisition, two numismatic engravings and 14 watercolour maps and plans of cities and troop movements. The second volume (XVI, 203 p.) includes another 55 beautiful aquatints from Portuguese localities, as well as a double engraving of Alcácer do Sal, not registered in the index, but referred to by Tooley as nº 25. All engravings are hand-coloured and of great aesthetic effect, some being doubles. In general, they are all very clean, fresh and neatly folded. A few pages of text with very slight moisture stains not affecting the engravings. Contemporary green morocco half-bindings with covers covered with a canvas similar to the spine and new endpapers. The copies rarely appear on the market, especially when complete like this one. Provenance: lot 353, from Silva's/Pedro de Azevedo auction, April 1993; lot 432 of the Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, March 2000, (same copy). Tooley, 291 (The most beautiful illustrated book on Portugal of the period). Duarte de Sousa, 398.

First edition, published without the author's name, of the English translation of the work of the famous Genoese historian Conestaggio, by algyns wrongly attributed to D. João da Silva, Count of Portalegre. Initially considered pro-Spanish, this did not prevent it from being banned in the court of Filipe I (of Portugal). The work, whose original edition was published in Genoa in 1585, was quickly translated into German, French, Latin, Castilian and English, with several editions until the mid-17th century, has now been rehabilitated and is considered an objective and impartial account of events. that led to the loss of independence from Portugal in 1580 (see article published by Prof. Giacinto Manuppela, in the Boletim Internacional de Bibliografia Luso-Brasileira, Lisbon, FCG, 1960, vol. I, nº 3, p. 352). Complete copy, slightly cropped and with slight foxing. Title page (blank verso) slightly dusty, with old belonging on the upper margin. Fernão Mendes Pinto (1510/14-1583), famous traveler and adventurer, was born in Montemor-o-Velho. In 1537 he left for India, having remained in the Orient for some 21 years. The “Peregrinação”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was published on the initiative of Fr. Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death, from the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. Copy with strong browning and some handling but complete and solid of the very rare first edition in Dutch, illustrated with seven copperplate prints and an engraved frontispiece. All engravings are correctly placed, as indicated in the upper right corner. The text is almost entirely printed in Gothic characters and the chapters referring to Saint Francis Xavier, which were not well accepted in the Netherlands, a country at the time predominantly Calvinist, were removed. The scholar bibliographer Fr. Francisco Leite de Faria (The many editions of «Peregrinação» by Fernão Mendes Pinto, Lisbon, 1992, p. 91) was only able to locate one copy in Portugal (in the Jorge de Brito Collection), six in the Netherlands, one in Germany and one in the United States of America. Circular speaking ex-libris with the unidentified initials BL. Contemporary binding, fully made of rigid parchment, with the original white lined endpapers. Leite de Faria, 54-1.

Work dedicated to D. João III, by a shod hermit of the Order of Saint Augustine (1507-1572), born in São Miguel de Urró (Penafiel), who became bishop of Coimbra (1545-1572). In his text, Fr. João Soares intends to justify, through the interpretation of the Scriptures, the anti-Jewish Iberian discourse prevalent at the time and, at the same time, to legitimize the inquisitorial persecutions against the enemies of the faith. The complex title page (in black and red), made up of four xilographic engravings (an initial L and two decorative stripes), is very significant for the author’s purposes: the lower engraving represents a Christian friar and the four types of infidels: heretics, Gentiles, Jews and Moors. Edition entirely composed in Gothic characters, presenting all the text pages, in two columns, xilographic framed, consisting of small loose stripes. Copy slightly handled, but clean. Two crossed-out (old) ownership marks between the lines of the title; inscription with the place and date in the lower margin. At the end of the text (verso of sheet R4), an extensive colophon, stating the print completion on the 20th of January 1543. On the verso of the last page, the great mark of the printer Luís Rodrigues. Recent binding, full parchment, with full gilt on the covers and spine and the coat of arms of Portugal gold engraved at the centre of both covers. Anselmo, 1037. Palau, 315315. National Library (16th century), 858. Not mentioned in the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II.

First edition of one of the most beautiful productions of Portuguese presses from the 1600s and a fundamental work for the history of Brazil (first and only published volume). In his introduction, Father Simão de Vasconcelos (1597-1671) proposes the theory that the Earthly Paradise would be located in Portuguese America. Although the licenses had been granted, between May 18, 1661 and November 7, 1662 (?), the Father Visitador considered that such an assertion was contrary to the dogmas of the Catholic faith and demanded that this passage be deleted. Thus, in all known copies the pagination jumps from p. 178 to 185. At the end, between pages 481 and 528 it includes the Latin poem "De Beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria", by Father José de Anchieta who composed it «...quando esteve em refens entre Indios barbaros, com a ajuda da Virgem, escrevendo na praia em lugar de papel, que alli não tinha, nem tinta». The engraved frontispiece, which is missing in many examples, was recovered and mounted on a stub, with reinforcement of the inner margin, and has some minor restorations. Several leaves with small restorations on the lower outer corner. Folio N4 (p. 103/104) with stain and tear poorly restored, but not lacking in support. Otherwise a clean and solid copy, slightly cropped, covered in 20th century full sheepskin binding with some wear, weak joints and a damaged turn in at the top of the spine. Provenance: lot 842 at Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, October 1999 (same copy). Borba de Moraes, p. 888. Sabin, 98651. Rodrigues, 2457. Inocêncio, VII, p. 286. Samodãoes, 3443. Arouca, V 51.
