OSÓRIO, D. Jerónimo.- DE REBVS, | EMMANVELIS REGIS LV- | SITANIÆ INVICTISSIMI VIRTVTE | ET AVSPICIO | GESTIS LIBRI | DVODECIM. | Auctore Hieronymo Osorio | EPISCOPO SYLVENSI.- Olisypone: Apud Antonium Gondisaluü, 1571.- 480, [2] p.; 31 cm.- E. Original edition of one of the most important texts by the humanist scholar D. Jerónimo Osório (1506-1580), who would become the last bishop of Silves (1564-1577) and the first of the renewed diocese of the Algarve, based in Faro (1577-1580), of whom Montaigne claimed to be "le meilleur historien latin de nos siècles". The author says in the prologue that he read the Chronicle of D. Manue I by Damião de Góis "... com grande trabalho, vigilância e sagacidade". The work describes all the notable events that took place during the reign of the Venturoso, namely the voyage of Vasco da Gama, the discovery of Brazil, the events of India and Africa, all narrated with great historical accuracy. Complete copy, with light handling, preserving generous margins (308x212 mm). Title page slightly dusty, with some restorations and four old ownership marks. At least the first section appears to have been washed and repasted. Numerous underlinings, signatures and annotations from the time, or slightly later (mostly two-handed), some marred by the slight trimming; some scratches, scribbles and even marginal drawings; occasional minor stains. Full non-contemporary sheepskin binding, with new endpapers, blind stamped on the covers and gold tooling on the spine. Anselmo, 694. Samodães, 2292.
