Com as notas de José Warton, e do traductor.- Rio de Janeiro: na Impressão Regia, 1811.- 1 f. grav., VII, [1 br.], IX, [1], 203, [1] p.; 25 cm.- E. First edition of the first translation by an English-language author printed in South America. The translator was Fernando José de Portugal e Castro (1752-1817), 1st Count of Aguiar and 14th Viceroy of Brazil. Bilingual edition with texts on facing pages and extensive notes. Complete copy, very clean, of the unjustified special run, printed on heavy paper (“grand papier”). The edition presents the following collation, a little confusing: engraved title page (blank verso); Prefacção (p. [I] to VII, with blank verso); Ensaios Moraes... (false title, 1 f. unpaged with blank verso); Advertências (p. [III], IV, V, with blank verso); Epistola I. (p. [VII], VIII and IX); on verso (not paginated), Epistola I., followed by Epistola I. (not paginated, but p. [3]), followed by the rest of the text (p. 4 to 203, on verso, Errata). Recent full shagreen binding with simple triple ornamental borders on the covers, closed panels on the spine, roll on the squares and top edge gilt. Vale Cabral, 205. Bibliography of the Royal Print, 225.
