MANUSCRITO.- ANDRADE, Bernardim Freire de (Tenente-General).- Cópia do processo.- Século XIX (1809-1810).- 1 vol. (cerca de 800 p.); 31 cm.- E.
Bernardim Freire de Andrade (1759-1809), general officer of the Portuguese Army, born in Lisbon, assassinated during the Peninsular War. Authentic copy, at the request of José Gomes Freire de Andrade (Principal Freire who would become president of the Provisional Board), taken from the War Council process in which his brother, lieutenant general Bernardim Freire de Andrade, was sentenced and rehabilitated. He was “atrocious and savagely murdered on March 17, 1809, to be celebrated as Vª. A. R. [the Prince Regent], whose Regio concept is so important to the memory of the late general and the honor of the dismayed family and another identical copy to be kept in the Registry Office of his house”. The request was the subject of an order dated January 28, 1810. The sentence determined that the lieutenant general's military conduct was not only irreproachable, but worthy of much praise. Volume with more than 800 pages, probably written in one hand. At the end, a closing statement dated from the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs and War, March 12, 1810. Autograph signature: Gregório Gomes da Silva. Document with very slight browning, fully legible. A modest contemporary binding, with a sheepskin spine, without any label, with traces of wormholes.

Third Spanish edition of “Peregrinação”, published before the birth of the second Portuguese one, printed in Lisbon, in 1678 (the first two Spanish editions, were published in Madrid, in 1620 and 1627). Fernão Mendes (1510/14-1583) left for India in 1537, having remained in the East for around 21 years. The “Pilgrimage”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was originally published on the initiative of Friar Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death (Lisbon, 1614), based on the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. The first three preliminary pages correspond to the title, licenses and dedication. On the fourth page begins the «Apologia en favor de Fernan Mendes Pinto, y essa Historia Oriental», by the translator, Francisco de Herrera, which runs for 16 pages. This is followed by the «Catalogo de los avtores que han written de las Indias Orientales, Iapon, y China, y de sus situaciones, nauegacion, y conquers». The work begins with the next page. At the end, there is the «Tabla de los capitulos...» and, on the last page (with a blank verso), the colophon. Lightly handled copy, with slight browning and occasional stains; outside margin of the first two and last sheets with some restorations, without affecting the text; some inscriptions of ownership, faded, on the title page. Rare translation into the vernacular of one of the best-known works of a humanist scholar, poet and jurist (1450-1524), born in Spalato, Dalmatia (today Split, Croatia), who lived the last years of his life in isolation to dedicate himself to the study of Theology. It is also an important 16th century Portuguese species, with an interesting xilograph arrangement of the title page, of which there are two variants (see BN, 495/496). The present copy appears, however, to be a mix of both, as it has the last page numbered 295, a single section and some foliation errors common to both variants. A cropped copy, with slight browning, but overall solid and clean. Rhombus stamp of the House of Lafões, on the title page (slightly damaged by the trimming on the lower margin). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot nº 4279 from the auction held in 1940, with entry in the name of the translator). Binding from the first half of the 20th century, with blind tooling on the covers and inlays, gold decorate spine and carmine edges. Anselmo, 513. Samodães, 1792. National Library (16th Century), 495/496. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II, 165.
