Paolo Nicoletti (1368-1429), better known as Paolo Veneto, religious of the Order of Saint Augustine, Italian philosopher, theologian and humanist, born in Udine, studied at the University of Oxford and taught at the University of Siena, Perugia, Bologna and Padua. Original edition of a work that, according to some, resulted from the revision and reformulation of another, in the vernacular, by the cosmographer Ristoro d’Arezzo (fl. 1.282), with which it shares, in fact, part of the same title: “Della composizione del mondo...”. The edition, entirely composed in Gothic characters (text in two columns), is illustrated with around 50 astronomical and astrological woodcut figures. At the end of the text, an extensive colophon, which reads: Lugduniq. impressum in edibus honesti viri Antonii du Ry calcographi admodum diligentis Anno a redemptione humana Millesimo quigentesimo vigesimo quinto. Die decimaseptima mensis Novembris (followed by a short recording). On the front of the last sheet (with a blank verso), the mark of Simon Vincent, responsible for editing. Copy slightly cropped, with some small wormholes (not exceeding 20 mm) that sometimes reach the text, in the lower margin of the first four pages; affecting one to three lines, on the following nine leaves; reduced to a few small holes in the remaining sheets. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (not found in the auction catalogue held in 1940). 20th century binding, full sheepskin, with blind tooling on the covers and spine; small superficial damage.

Although the first testimonies of the presence of hermits in Serra d'Ossa date back to the 4th century, it was only in 1536 that the Congregation of the Poor of Jesus Christ was founded, by a bull from Pope Paul III, giving the hermits of Serra d'Ossa the rule of Saint Augustine. In 1578, Pope Gregory XIII, through the intervention of Cardinal D. Henrique, integrated the community into the congregation of Hermits of Saint Paul, making the privileges of the mendicant orders applicable to them. The master priest Henrique de Santo António (1682-1783), in the century Manuel Armão, born in Cascais, in addition to being a chronicler, was qualifier of the Holy Office, examiner of the three military orders, rector of the Lisbon Monastery and, twice, general of the order. The collation of each volume is as follows: I - [68], 986 p.: 1 engraved cover; II - [32], 961, [1 br,] p.: 1 engraved cover. The original of the third volume was completed, but disappeared in the 1755 earthquake, according to some, or it was printed and no copies are known, according to others. Both volumes are illustrated with the same engraved cover, between the front and the title page, representing Serra d’Ossa and its monastery. Exceptional copy (possibly washed), with impeccably gilt edge, covered in magnificent full green morocco bindings, signed Rousselle (Parisian bookbinder from the second half of the 19th century), with closed gilt panels on the spine, roll on the squares and watered silk endpapers. Inocêncio, III, p. 179 and X, p. 184. Samodães, 3053. Palha, 2470. Auction Silva’s / Pedro de Azevedo, November 2000, lot nº 363 (the same copy).

First folio edition of a monument to equestrian art, unanimously considered one of the most beautiful French editions of the 18th century. The first two small-format editions (in-16th) were published in 1729 and 1731, this being the third. The edition is illustrated with an engraved allegorical frontispiece representing the education of Achilles, with the bust of Louis XV in a medallion, 24 copperplate prints and three large allusive vignettes (140x235 mm), one at the beginning of each of the three parts of the work, opened on copper plate by the best engravers of the time (Cars, Aveline, Cocart, Audran, Lebas, Beauvais et Desplaces), according to originals by Charles Parrocel and Antoine Coquart. François Robichon de la Guérinière (1688-1751), recognized as the founder of the French riding school, began his activity as a squire to the Count d'Armagnac who, in 1715, commissioned him to found an equestrian academy in Paris. From 1730 until his death, with his brother Pierre as a partner, he directed the Académie des Tuilleries, with Prince Charles of Lorraine, chief equerry of King Louis XV, as its patron. We can consider the set of 24 plates into the following five groups: I – Double prints: 1. Le nom et la situation des parties extérieures du cheval (at the beginning of the text); 2. La course des têtes et de la bague (p. 166, with two small stains); 3. Maladies du cheval (p. 184). II - Technical plates: (A. Coquart — Borde): 4. La bride (p. 32); 5. Les différentes espèces de fers (p. 40); 6. La selle (p. 48). III - Teaching outlines (printed alongside the text, full page): 7. IV - Plates of Parrocel et Audran (allures): 15 e 16. Les allures naturelles" (p. 74 et 74 bis); 17 e 18. Les allures artificielles (p. 78 et 81). V - Horsemen figures (originals from Parrocel): 19. L'épaule en dedans (p. 104); 20. Le marquis de Beauvilliers (p. 109); 21. Monsieur de Kraut (p. 114); 22. Mr. le Comte de St Aignan (p. 117); 23. M. le Marquis de La Ferté (p. 126); 24. S.A.S. Charles Prince de Nassau" (p. 143). Slightly cropped copy, but very clean and complete, with all the prints well placed and folded (the double prints with the outer edges folded). Two ex libris: Ex Bibliotecha J. H. Ancerhub (with silhouette, dated 1937); and Casa de Marialava - Dom Diogo. Contemporary full sheepskin binding, slightly worn, with heraldic book stamps, engraved in gold in the centre of the front cover, surrounded by the legend: Ex Bibliotheca Carlowitziana (Carl Adolf von Carlowitz, Prussian general, born in Großhartmannsdorf, in Saxony, 1771 -1837), library auctioned in 1930, in Berlin, by the antiques dealer Heinrich Rosenberg. Friar João participated in the third session of the Council of Trent (1561/63), was confessor of King D. João III and bishop of Coimbra between 1545 and the year of his death. In addition to the constitutions of his diocese, he left us an extensive bibliography on religious themes, including commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark. Multidisciplinary treatise authored by an illustrious Torrejano (1568-1630) who was Master of Mathematics, Cosmography and Navigation and Chief Cosmographer of the Kingdom. The edition, apparently the only one, was printed at the expense of Pero Ramires and presents very interesting typographic aspects, namely, dozens of xilograph engravings, representing, with some crudeness, astronomical and astrological themes. It is worth noting, however, a very curious mobile scheme that in some copies appears mounted on the engraving on the verso of folio P5 (with two pieces rotating on the engraving, around an axis, representing the model of an instrument to determine the birth of signs), and which is currently to be assembled, with the engravings of the two pieces printed on the front of the last folio of the work (folio Oo8r, with blank verso). According to the author himself: «As pessoas curiosas mandarão fazer este instrumento de metal que sairá mais certo do que em papel». The edition presents some layout errors, namely: p. 24 duplicated (fólios C8 and D1); jumping from p. 101 to p. 103 (folios O2 and O3); jumping from p. 221 to p. 223 (folios Ff5 and Ff6); some changed numbers. The copy, slightly cropped (carminated and waxed edges) with the preliminary pages poorly bound, retains the rare errata sheet (before the f. ¶¶) that is missing in most known copies. Title page a little dusty, with some minor restorations on the verso (lower outer corner reconstituted, with damage to the xilograph frame); small wormhole (poorly) repaired, on the lower margin of sheets Bb4 to Ee5 (25 f.); occasional light (tidal) stains. Otherwise, a complete, solid and generally clean copy. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot nº 2892 from the auction held in 1940). Binding from the 19th century, fully flecked sheepskin, with the spine profusely gold tooling (small superficial damage to the label). Inocêncio V, p. 427 (copies are rare). Nepomuceno, 712. Ávila Perez, 2892. Auvermann, 155. Arouca, F 107 (does not mention the last unnumbered sheet, with the two pieces engraved).

Second edition of a work of the greatest importance for the history of the Holy Places and their religious monuments. The Franciscan Bernardino Amico, born in Gallipoli (fl. 1590-1610), traveled through the Holy Land at the end of the 16th century, having been prior of his order in Jerusalem between 1593 and 1597(?). During his stay he collected numerous notes and drawings from life, including facades and plans of some now-vanished buildings. Back in Italy, he published the work, first in 1609, with engravings by Antonio Tempesta, nine prints less than in the present edition, illustrated with 33 double engravings, by the famous French engraver Jacques Callot, including an engraved frontispiece and a view of Jerusalem, according to the original by Antonio de Angelis (1578). The work is dedicated to Cosimo II, of Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who commissioned the engravings from Callot, expressly for this second edition. The volume presents irregular and incomprehensible pagination, which is why we present the detailed and rigorous collation below: [1], ¶4, A2, B1, C-F2, G1, H-L2, M1, N-R2, S1, T-V2, X1, Y-Z2, Aa-Cc2, Dd1, Ee-Qq2, Rr1, Ss-Vv2. The edition presents the engravings interspersed in successive printing and only afterwards was the respective descriptive text added. It was then necessary to add additional folios, when the remaining space proved to be insufficient for the text that needed to be printed, which explains the irregularity of the sections. On the verso of the last folio, the following colophon: In Firenze, M.DC.XIX. per il Cecconcelli. [mark of the pinter] Alle Stelle Medicee. Con Licenzia dé Superiori. All folios are found mounted in guards. Lightly cropped copy, with light handling and occasional stains. Some tears without lack of support, particularly in the folds of the engravings (and on the margin of f. O1). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (not found in the auction catalogue held in 1940). Contemporarry binding, fully of rigid parchment, slightly worn and with some damage to the spine (recoverable). Amico's drawings were the first accurate images that reached the West, of some of the places of greatest religious significance in the Holy Land, namely the building of the Last Supper, the Way of the Cross and the Holy Sepulcher. Lieure (J. Callot), 306-352. Cicognara, 3932. Brunet, I, col. 231.

Complete copy (retains the final errata sheet), of one of the most beautiful books printed in Portugal in the 18th century and, certainly, one of the most sought after. Inocêncio states that some intended to attribute the work to the 4th Marquis of Marialva, chief groom, but this has not been confirmed to this day. The 93 engravings, of which 22 are fold-out (all well folded and placed), mainly represent attitudes of the horse in teaching and are opened on copper plate by several engravers, mainly Luís Fróis, but also Manuel Alegre, Luís Fernandez Piedra and others , according to originals by Joaquim Carneiro da Silva (Ernesto Soares, História, 1076). Print 76 (p. 390) bears a curious inscription: Silva del. — H. Queverdo aqua forti et terminé par J. J. Droüet 1792 (engravers not mentioned by E. Soares). The prince regent, future king D. João VI, is represented in engravings 21, 29, 53 and 59 (E. Soares and Ferreira Lima, Dictionary of Iconography, 1549 B). Allusive vignettes at the beginning of books I and VI. Portrait of the Prince Regent (at the beginning), title page and following page, as well as the last 20 pages, with slight foxing that affect the margin of the last engraving; purchase inscription (signed Manuel José Vitorino), from the 19th century, but not dated, on the verso of the portrait, which has some abrasion (to be erased ownership) on the upper margin. Otherwise, a clean copy, keeping the engravings very fresh and well folded. 20th century binding, fully sheepskin, with flecked patina and spine with closed panels, in the style of the time.
