Juan Nicolás de Orozco y Covarrubias (ca. 1540-1610), Toledo writer and moralist, nephew of Diego de Covarrubias and brother of the theologian Sebastian de Covarrubias, was a friend of Saint John of the Cross and, since 1594, bishop of Agrigento, in Sicily, where he died. He left us, among other works, a collection of “Emblemas morales” (Segovia, 1589), republished and translated several times. First edition of his “Paradoxas”, the only known work by the printer Marcos Ortega in Segovia (successor of Juan de la Cuesta). Old ownership on the title page: [illegible] Sorocaba; ink stain on upper edge of sixth preliminary sheet and occasional smaller stains. Otherwise, a very clean copy with black and gilt edges. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 3700 from the auction held in 1940). Contemporary binding, or a little later, full sheepskin, with the spine slightly worn, gold decorated.
