Giovanni Pietro Maffei (1533-1603), Jesuit historian, born in Bergamo, Italy, was, for two centuries, the main biographer of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. At the invitation of Cardinal-King D. Henrique, he lived in Portugal between 1579 and 1584, with the purpose of writing a history of the Portuguese missions in America, India and Japan; the work would be published in Florence with the title “Historiarum Indicarum Libri XVI“ (1588), having achieved great success, with numerous editions and translations in different languages. Copy of work from the second edition of his masterpiece, with the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, which takes place between pages 455 and 541. Between pages 333 and 453, there is a set of letters from Jesuits about India that are presented with their own cover: “Selectarvm epistolarvm ex India libri qvatvor...”. The copy, although complete and perfectly legible, has strong moisture (tidal) and fungus stains, especially on the outer margin of the second half of the volume. Title page stained and with two scratched ownerships. All that remains of the binding are the wooden covers (with traces of the covering and metal clasps). Brunet, III, coll. 1290.
