Third Spanish edition of “Peregrinação”, published before the birth of the second Portuguese one, printed in Lisbon, in 1678 (the first two Spanish editions, were published in Madrid, in 1620 and 1627). Fernão Mendes (1510/14-1583) left for India in 1537, having remained in the East for around 21 years. The “Pilgrimage”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was originally published on the initiative of Friar Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death (Lisbon, 1614), based on the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. The first three preliminary pages correspond to the title, licenses and dedication. On the fourth page begins the «Apologia en favor de Fernan Mendes Pinto, y essa Historia Oriental», by the translator, Francisco de Herrera, which runs for 16 pages. This is followed by the «Catalogo de los avtores que han written de las Indias Orientales, Iapon, y China, y de sus situaciones, nauegacion, y conquers». The work begins with the next page. At the end, there is the «Tabla de los capitulos...» and, on the last page (with a blank verso), the colophon. Lightly handled copy, with slight browning and occasional stains; outside margin of the first two and last sheets with some restorations, without affecting the text; some inscriptions of ownership, faded, on the title page. Contemporary binding, fully made of flexible parchment, a little worn, with new endpapers and ties. Inocêncio, II, p. 289. Samodães, 2074. Palau, 163204. Leite de Faria, 27-4.
