Greek poet and scholar, from the Hellenistic period, born in Cyrene (today in Libya), was the second director of the Library of Alexandria. Genevan edition of the only texts by the author that have come down to us, out of a total of around 800, which have since disappeared. The second work, also initiated by Henri Estienne, is the critical edition of Sophocles' seven tragedies, with comments (scholia) by the German humanist Joachim Camerarius the Elder (1500-1574). Slightly cropped copy with slight browning, but clean. Modern binding, with patina and gold decoration on the spine in the style of the 18th century. Adams C 232, Renouard (Estienne), p. 131.
