Año de M. D. LXXVIII. [1578].- [8], 217, [1] f.: il.; 18 cm.- E
Jerónimo Corte-Real (ca. 1533-1588), poet and painter of Renaissance humanism, born in Lisbon, whose most famous work, "Sucesso do segundo cerco de Diu" (Lisbon, 1574), was dedicated to King D. Sebastião. His poem Felississima victoria..., in fifteen cantos, composed in Spanish, narrates the naval battle of Lepanto, which took place in 1571, between the forces of the Christian League, led by D. João of Austria (bastard son of Charles V) and the Turkish armada, under the command of Ali Pasha. The edition, almost entirely printed in italics on very thin paper, is illustrated with 15 allusive woodcuts (80x105 mm.), accompanied by as many historical capitals, at the beginning of each canto. The title page has a xylographic cartouche surrounding the title, bearing, on the back, the coat of arms of Philip II, King of Spain, to whom the work is dedicated. The last folio, with a blank back, includes a colophon, with the printer's mark. Exemplary overly trimmed copy, especially on the outer lateral margin, affecting the composition of the title page (front and back), beginning of the first canto (engraving and text of sheet A1r) and beginning of the second canto (only engraving of sheet B4v). Stained title page; some handling, browning and more accentuated tidal stains in the first third of the volume. It is, however, complete and solid. Eighteenth-century full mottled sheepskin binding, retaining the original endpapers. Inocêncio, III, p. 263. Anselmo, 938. D. Manuel II Library, 128. Palau, 63002. Palha, 786. REGIME[N]TO & or | denações da fazenda. M. D. xlviij.- [Lisboa: em casa de Germão Galharde, 1548].- 8, cxvj [i. é 115], [2] f.; 29 cm.- E.
Second edition of this "Regimento" that reformulates the Manueline edition printed in Lisbon in 1516. The beginnings of the Casa dos Contos (public accounting house) date back to the reign of King D. Dinis, but the oldest regiment (manuscript) dates from 1389 (reign of King D. João I), followed by those of 1419 and 1434 (by King D. Duarte). With the printed regiments of 1516 and 1548, the rules that would guide the Kingdom's public accounting were systematized until the mid-eighteenth century, establishing, among other provisions, the competences of the Treasury's supervisors. The copy has the autograph signatures of Dr. Ruy Gago and the account graduate Bernardim Esteves on the penultimate page, which includes a rare reference to the edition's circulation: 1000 copies. An extensive colophon follows: "Aqui se acaba ho liuro do regime[n]to da fazenda del rey nosso senhor. Foy impresso per autoridade e preuilegio de sua Alteza esta segu[n]da vez: em a cidade d[e] Lixboa em casa de Germão galharde aos. xxv. dias do mes de Feuereyro de mil e quinhentos e quare[n]ta e oyto annos". Copy slightly handled, trimmed, with tangential damage to the top of the woodcut frame of the title page, a little worn, which has two marginal restorations; small central support failure, in the last three sheets affecting some letters; occasional notes and underlining of the period, sometimes marred by the trimming on the outer margin; slight tidal stains on the inner and upper margins (including a few lines of text) in about half the volume. It is, however, 19th century full sheepskin simple binding. Anselmo, 634. National Library (16th century), 770. D. Manuel II Library only mentions the Manueline edition of 1516.

The work describes the pastoral journey of the Archbishop of Goa, D. Pedro de Meneses, O.S.A. (1559-1617), to the ancestral community of Christians from St. Thomas on the Malabar coast (Querala, India), which followed the traditional Syriac-Chaldean rite. It is, therefore, of the greatest importance for the history of this Christian Church in the East, of which previously little or nothing was known. The author (16th century-1628), born in Beja, professed in 1591 at the Hermits of St Agustine, at the Graça Monastery in Lisbon; in 1602 he was part of an embassy to the Shah of Persia, whose account can be read in book III of the present Journey; shortly thereafter he was appointed Bishop of Cyrene and Apostolic Nuncio to the Shah of Persia. As usual, the volume includes, with its own title page and independent foliation, the "Synodo diocesano da Igreja e Bispado de Angamale dos antigos christãos de Sam Thome das Serras do Malauar das partes da India Oriental ([2], 62 f.), seguindo-se a Missa de qve vsam os antigos christãos de São Thome do Bispado de Angamale..." Rare first edition of an important title for the history of the New World, reporting, among other unpublished facts, the discovery of the Amazon. Copy without the Historical "Compendio historial, e indice chronologico pervano, y del nvevo Reyno de Granada..." (24 pages), which is usually found at the end, but which is missing in most of the copies. According to Borba de Moraes (II, p. 213), the rarity of the edition is due to the fact that it was published without the permission of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, against the express guidance of Pope Clement X, for which it was included in the Index. Copy slightly trimmed, with some browning and handling. Tear, with lack of support, on the outer margin of the C6 sheet (p. 35/36), without affecting the text. Oval stamp on the title page of the Jesuit College of Córdoba(?); some old ownerships deleted on the same page. Full parchment binding, not contemporary (reconstructed), with new endpapers, missing one of the silk ties. Palau, 273201, does not mention the historic Compendium, on the body of the record, only mentioning it in the commentary on the copy of Salvá (3389) and ...otro que estuvo en poder de Murillo. KAEMPFER, Engelbert.- Histoire naturelle, civile, et ecclesiastique de l’Empire du Japon...- A La Haye: Chez P. Gosse & J. Neaulme, 1729.- 2 vols. in 1: 1 portada grav., 45 [i. é 43] gravuras; 30 cm.- E.
Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), German physician and vajante, born in Lemgo (Westphalia), traveled extensively in Eastern Europe, the Middle and Far East. In 1669 he arrived in Jakarta (Indonesia) and the following year in Japan, as a doctor, at the service of the Dutch East India Company, where he would stay for two years. Kaemper was the introducer of acupuncture in Europe, where he returned definitively in 1693. His manuscripts, which are now in the British Museum, were purchased by Sir Hans Sloane, who published them in English in 1727 and in the present edition of 1729, in the French version. The collation of the two volumes is as follows: I - [8], LII, 217, [1 br.] p.; II - [4], 313, [1]. 96 p. The prints are all gathered in tome I, after the respective index, lacking engravings VII and XI belonging to the first tome. The volume (with the two volumes together), very worn, presents serious imperfections, namely: generalized wormholes, mainly marginal, but deeper in the last leaves of each one of the two volumes; the engravings, in general clean and well folded, the vast majority not showing cuts, with the exception of engravings 17 to 29 which are affected, although tangentially. Heraldic ex-libris on the back cover: Francisci Petit Doct. Med. Full sheepskin binding of the time, badly damaged, with the covers almost loose. Brunet, III, 638. Cordier (Japonica), 416. Cox (Travel), I, p. 332.

OSÓRIO, D. Jerónimo.- DE REBVS, | EMMANVELIS REGIS LV- | SITANIÆ INVICTISSIMI VIRTVTE | ET AVSPICIO | GESTIS LIBRI | DVODECIM. | Auctore Hieronymo Osorio | EPISCOPO SYLVENSI.- Olisypone: Apud Antonium Gondisaluü, 1571.- 480, [2] p.; 31 cm.- E.
Original edition of one of the most important texts by the humanist scholar D. Jerónimo Osório (1506-1580), who would become the last bishop of Silves (1564-1577) and the first of the renewed diocese of the Algarve, based in Faro (1577) -1580), of whom Montaigne claimed to be "le meilleur historien latin de nos siècles". The author says in the prologue that he read the Chronicle of D. Manuel de Damião de Góis ... with great work, vigilance and wit. The work describes all the remarkable deeds that took place during the reign of the Fortunate One, namely Vasco da Gama's journey, the discovery of Brazil, the events in India and Africa, all narrated with great historical rigor. Complete copy, with slight handling, keeping generous margins (308x212 mm). Title page a little dusty, with some restoration and four old ownership marks. At least the first section appears to have been washed and reglued. Numerous underlinings, signatures and annotations from the period, or slightly later (mostly two-handed), some marred by the slight trimming; some scratches, scribbles and even marginal drawings; occasional minor stains. Full binding of non-contemporary sheepskin, with new endpapers, blind stamped on the covers and gold tools on the spine. Anselmo, 694. Samodães, 2292. National Library (16th century), 560. D. Manuel II Library, 329.

JESUS, Frei Rafael de, O.S.B.- CASTRIOTO | LVSITANO | PARTE I. | ENTREPRESA, E RESTAVRAÇAÕ | de Pernambuco; & das Capitanias Confinantes. VARIOS, E BELLICOS SVCCESSOS CASTRIOTO | ENTRE PORTUGUEZES, E BELGAS. | ACONTECIDOS PELLO DISCURSO DE VINTE E QUATRO ANNOS, E | tirados de noticias, relações, & memorias certas.- Lisboa: Na Impressaõ de Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, 1679.- [18], 701, [47] p.: 1 gravura; 27 cm.- E.
First edition of a work based on the manuscript of the "Historia da guerra de Pernambuco e feitos memoraveis do Mestre de Campo João Fernandes Vieira", by Diogo Lopes Santiago, which only came to be published in 1875-1880. In fact, it is a compliment by Vieira, nicknamed Castrioto in allusion to the Albanian hero and king George Castrioto, who at the time was a very popular figure in Portugal. The author (1640-1693), a Benedictine monk, born in Guimarães, was the main chronicler of the Kingdom, being responsible for writing the seventh part of the "Monarquia Lusitana". The volume initially includes an engraved and etched (very trimmed, with loss of subscription and reinforced margins on the back) portrait of Vieira with architectural framing. The title page has a restoration over the entire width of the lower margin (25x195 mm), tangentially affecting the imprint date. The specimen is somewhat trimmed, but generally clean, complete and solid, retaining the rare portrait. Recent full sheepskin binding, with patina and gold tooling in the manner of the period ("à la Duseuil"). Inocêncio, VII, p. 48. Samodães, 1632. Borba de Moraes, p. 427 (rare). Auvermann, 1062. Arouca, J 17.
