CUNHA, D. Rodrigo da.- CATALOGO | E HISTORIA DOS | BISPOS DO PORTO. | Offerecida a Diogo Lopes de Souza, Conde de Miran- | da, & Gouernador da Relação, & caza do | Porto, & seu districto: do Con- | selho de sua Magestade.- Porto: Por Ioaõ Rodriguez, 1623.- [24], 191, [1 br.], 451, [1 br., 83, 1 br.] p.; 25 cm.- E.
Original edition of the most prestigious work of the erudite Lisbon prelate, an important character from the first half of the 17th century and the Restoration, who actively contributed to the independence of Portugal. D. Rodrigo da Cunha (1577-1643), in addition to deputy of the Holy Office and inquisitor in Lisbon, was successively bishop of Portalegre (1615-1618), of Oporto (1618-1626), archbishop of Braga (1626-1634) and of Lisbon (1635-1642). Lower margin of the title page carefully redone, tangentially to the xilographic frame. For the rest, a very clean copy, slightly trimmed, with gold tooling. Topographic ex-libris of the Chatsworth Library. Nineteenth-century English-made binding with binding stamp depicting a crowned snake (Duke of Devonshire, Cavendish snake heraldry), engraved in gold on both covers; worn spine, with loose joints. Inocêncio, VII, p.167. Samodães, 973. Ameal, 748. Arouca, C 790. All these references omit the group of 191 pages corresponding to the first part of the work. We think, however, that this is a verification lapse, repeated over and over again.

The two volumes are lightly trimmed and with very some foxing. Handwritten ownership on the title page of the first part; occasional minor stains. Curious handwritten ownership on the flyleaf of the second volume: "Este livro he de Fr. Pantaleão do P[or]to. foi do irmão Fr. Fr[ncis]co de Villa Real Pregador. Fr. Pantaleão do P[or]to". Otherwise, a clean copy. Contemporary bindings, full flexible parchment (with labels glued to the backs), keeping two ties. Anselmo, 807. National Library (16th century), 11th and 10. D. Second edition of the "Itinerário" previously published in 1593, followed by that of 1600. From the author's biography (16th century), Franciscan from the Algarve province, we only know that he traveled throughout Europe, especially in Italy, and lived for almost three years in the Holy Land, having passed through Trento at the time of the third phase of the Council. O "Itinerário" is an account of his troubled pilgrimage, led by Friar Bonifácio of Ragusa, in which about 60 priests took part. The title page presents, in the centre, the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, Archbishop of Lisbon; the next three pages, framed by xylographic frames, include the royal charter, the dedication to D. Miguel and a message to devotees looking forward to visiting the Holy Land. The text of the trip is developed in the following 301 sheets, after which there is a "tavoada" in three sheets, with identical frames, ending with a small engraving of Death; there follows the index, which occupies three sheets and presents, at the end, an engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal; in front of the last sheet, the errata, framed by two xylographic elements: "Erros deste lilvro"; on the back, another full page engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal. Complete copy, slightly trimmed (carmine edges), with light handling; restoration on the lower outer corners of the first 16 and last 14 sheets; some sections appear to have been washed, namely those that have been restored. The copy belonged to Prof. Freiras Simões (ex-libris on the back cover and stamp on the flyleaf). Full burgundy morocco 20th century binding with gold ornamental borders on the covers and panels closed on the spine (with some wormholes); rolls on the squares and traced in gold on the thickness of the covers. Inocêncio, VI, p. 337. Anselmo, 40. National Library (16th century), 577. D. Manuel II Library, 339. See also the well-documented historical novel by Fernando Campos "A Casa do Pó" (Difel, 1986).

Manuel II (ex-libris on the back cover). Light trimming (carmine edges), conserving good margins and occasional slight foxing (some engravings with slight stains). PINHEL, Aires.- AD RVB. ET L. 2C. | C. de rescin. vend. |commentarij. | Authore Ario Pinelo Lusitano. | [gravura xilográfica com armas eclesiásticas] | CONIMBRICÆ. | Anno redemptionis, 1558. | mense Octobri. | Apud Antonium de Maris. | Ex tempore ueritas.- [Coimbra: António de Maris, 1558].- [4], 157, [7] f.; 27 cm.- E.
Treatise on the termination of purchase and sale contracts ("De rescindenda venditione"), authored by a notable legal advisor from Sesimbra. Aires Pinhel (ca. 1512/1515- ca. 1562) studied in Salamanca and obtained a doctorate in the city of Mondego, in Cesarean Law, having been appointed by King João III to teach at this University by charter of September 2, 1539, shortly after the definitive transfer of the University of Lisbon to Coimbra; he was judge of the Casa da Suplicação and, at the end of his career, prima professor at the University of Salamanca, replacing another Portuguese jurist, Manuel da Costa. The title page print represents the ecclesiastical arms of Cardinal D. Henrique, brother of King João III and future king of Portugal. Copy lightly trimmed, with the outside margins redone on the first 18 sheets (without affecting the text); four sheets with reinforcement in the inner margin; small central fault (20x4 mm) on sheet Q5, partially affecting some words in three lines. It is, however, complete and solid, with numerous annotations and underlines from the period, sometimes affected by the trimming. "Handwritten" property of the time, on the title page: Hieronymus (and stamp of Dr. Lopes Praça, in the lower margin). A slightly late interesting full sheepskin binding with blind tooling decoration on the covers and four gold florets on the sections of the spine, preserving the original endpapers. Anselmo, 825. National Library (16th century), 592. King Manuel II Library does not mention.

The document is part of the extension of the Pombaline reform of the University of Coimbra, already in the reign of Queen D. Maria I of Portugal, whose reformer was its dean, D. Francisco de Lemos de Faria Pereira Coutinho (1735-1822), a native of Marapicu ( Rio de Janeiro), then titular bishop of Zenópolis and future bishop of Coimbra (1779-1822). Fully red shagreen contemporary binding, a little worn, but recoverable, with traces of wormholes on the spine; multiple gold ornamental borders on the covers, florets on the corners of the central reserve and panels gold closed on the spine; leaves with gauffered and gilt edges; keeps the original marbled paper endpapers. The sumptuousness of the binding, combined with the care of the calligrapher, could indicate that the volume was intended for a high-ranking personality of the court, the Church or the University itself.

Anno de 1585.- [2], 30 f.; 26 cm.- E.
Third constitutions of the Diocese of Oporto, the first two having been published, respectively, in 1496, by order of D. Diogo de Sousa, and in 1541, by order of Friar D. Baltazar Limpo. Includes, with independent title page and foliation, the appendix Do estyllo e officiaes da Ivstiça of the Bishopric of Oporto, which is missing in some of the known specimens. Piece of the greatest importance for the history of the Diocese of Oporto and the Portuguese typography of the 16th century. The copy has 12 preliminary sheets, unlike the BNP copy which includes 14, but it is complete, as it was published on October 3, 1585. On March 18 of the following year, Friar Macos had both sheets printed: one with five corrections to the constitutions and another with a more extensive errata that have been added to many of the known copies, but not to the present. Light handling and slight foxing; some annotations and underscores from the period; flyleafl and titlle page with several old handwritten ownerships; corner and imperfect upper margin on the last six leaves (rodent signs). Full flexible parchment contemporary worn binding with damage on top of upper cover. Inocêncio, II, p. 106. Anselmo, 886. Samodães, 867. National Library (16th century), 618 and 619. Silva's / Pedro de Azevedo (December 1994), lot no. 59. D. Manuel II does not mention it.
