CONIMBRICENSES.- COMMENTARII | COLLEGII CO- | NIMBRICENSIS | SOCIETATIS | IESV, | In tres libros de Anima, Aristotelis Stagiritæ. | [gravura xilográfica com o trigrama da Companhia de Jesus].- Conimbricæ: Typis & expensis Antonij á Mariz, 1598.- [4], 558, [2 br., 26] p.; 23 cm.- E. Seventh and penultimate original edition, from a total of eight editorial initiatives, with comments on the works of Aristotle, published by the Society of Jesus in Coimbra (4) and in Lisbon (4), usually designated by Conimbricenses and destined for the Philosophy course at the Arts College of Coimbra, in charge of the Jesuits since 1555. The person responsible for this volume, which contains the commentaries on the three books of Aristotle's Treatise on the Soul, was Father Manuel de Góis SJ (1543-1597), born in Portel, a leading figure in the golden period of Jesuit teaching in Coimbra. The editions were enormously successful, having often been reissued in Venice, Lyon, Cologne, Hamburg and Mainz and remaining as manuals for Jesuit colleges until the mid-eighteenth century. Copy slightly trimmed, but very clean (possibly washed), of recent full rigid parchment binding, with ties and gold tooling, to the taste of the time, on the covers and spine. Anselmo, 916. BN (16th century), 195. D. Manuel II Library, Res. 249 Adq.
