Father Du Halde (1674-1743), French Jesuit historian, although he never traveled to the East, had access to numerous letters and reports from Jesuit missionaries of the China Mission, from which he produced his masterpiece which he came to have enormous repercussions in Europe, contributing in a lasting way to the construction of the image that Europeans now have of China and the Chinese. The work addresses a large number of subjects, namely geography, topography, medicine, Confucian religion, porcelain, traditions, agriculture and silk culture, etc. The numerous maps, of great technical rigour, are by the French cartographer Jean Bourguignon d'Anville and were mostly engraved by Parmentier. Original edition, consisting of four folio volumes, with the following description. Tome premier: [4], VIII, LII, III, [1], 592 p.: 16 foldable maps (alias 15, lacking the map of the second province of Kiang Nan, p. 126), VII prints of 1 p.; Tome second: [4], IV, 725, [1] p.: 10 prints (7 foldable, 2 double, 1 of 1 p.); Tome troisième: [4], IV, 364, [3, 1 br.] p.: 2 plans, 3 prints (alias 2, lacking the foldable print between pages 78 and 79, representing Jesuit priests Matteo Ricci, Adam Scholl, Ferdinand Verbiest and Paul Siu Colao;Tome quatrième: [4], II, 520 p.: 25 maps (13 double and 12 foldable). The four volumes are very worn and have serious imperfections, namely: generalized wormholes, mostly marginal, sometimes deep, occasionally affecting the text; the engravings are generally clean and the vast majority have no cuts, but some are affected by wormholes, especially marginal ones (a torn and loose map); lack of a map (in tome I) and a stamp (in tome III). In volume III, however, it preserves the appreciated double print that represents the astronomical observatory in Beijing (loose, with marginal wormholes). Brunet, II, 870. Sommervogel, IV, 35. Reverend William Bradford (1780-1857) was a military chaplain and accompanied Wellington's forces in the Peninsular campaign against Napoleon's troops. His drawings were perfected and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books about Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. Variant of the 1810 edition, containing two parts (in this copy bound in reverse order). The first part ("Sketches") is illustrated with 42 aquatints coloured by hand, representing, above all, popular costumes and views of localities, followed by 13 equally coloured aquatints, with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms. This should be followed by the "Revue historique...", not illustrated, which in the present copy is bound at the beginning of the volume. The text is bilingual in English and French. The engravings match exactly with the respective explanatory text sheets (numbered 1 to 38), with sheets 5, 18, 32 and 37 corresponding to two engravings each. Of these four engravings, only the engraving on S. 18 is mentioned in the index. Exemplary with rare foxing, but in general, clean and with large margins. Heraldic Ex-libris of the Molineux family (United Kingdom). Magnificent fully red morocco ("crushed morocco") contemporary binding, with two square frames on the covers, one in gold ("filet à l’ancienne") and the other in blind tooling (with fleur-de-lis); simple roll on the squares and on the thickness of the covers; blind and gold tooling decorated spine. Scevole and Louis (1571-1650 & 1656), inseparable twin brothers, scholars and historians, were the authors of a "Histoire genealogique de la Maison de France", a work they wrote together during 50 years of research and work. The translation by Francis Stanford (1630-1694) was dedicated to Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort of England, by marriage to King Charles II. Illustrated edition with an allegorical engraving next to the title page, an engraving representing "The several emblems and mottoes of the Kings of Portugal" (missing in the present issue) and 20 copperplate prints, with coats of arms, integrated in the text. The title page of the second part of "The second book of the Royal House of Portugal...", is bound after the first page of text (Aaa2), when it should have been before. The first four leaves, including the engraving, with the inside margin carefully reconstructed, affecting five letters of the title that were retouched (on the title page). Foldable leaf with some browning. Recent full morocco (signed Frederico d'Almeida) binding profusely gold tooling, presenting, in the central reserve of both covers, the coat of arms of Portugal with the stamp of a winged serpent or dragon; watered silk endpapers, doublure with rolls in the squares and gilt edge.

First edition of the second compilation of laws in Portugal (the first edition of the first compilation dates from 1512-1513 and came off the presses of Valentim Fernandes). Volume consisting of the first two books of the "Ordenações Manuelinas", with the third, fourth and fifth books missing. The collation of the two books is as follows: O primeiro liuro das ordenações: [3, 1 br.], CLX f.; "Aqui começa o segu[n]do liuro": [2], LXIX, [1] f. The edition is printed entirely in rotunda Gothic characters, with only the frontispieces of the first and third books being printed. Each book has its colophon at the end: [Livros primeiro]: ¶ "Aqui acaba o p[ri]meiro liuro das ordenações. Foi impresso em ha çidade Deuora por Jacobo cronberguer aleman". [Livro segundo]: ¶ "Aqui acaba o segu[n]do liuro das ordenações. Foy impresso em ha çidade d[e] Lixboa por Jacobo cronberguer aleman". (followed by the registration). Old inscription crossed out, on the upper margin of the second sheet (tauoada); slight stain on the last two leaves; inscription of the period, on the back of the last page with the beginning of the text of the "Ordenação da ordem do juízo". Some notes from the period, sometimes damaged by the trimming. For the rest, a slightly trimmed specimen (carmine edges), but with good margins, exceptionally well maintained and clean. Castor Durante (1529-1590), Italian physician, botanist and poet of the Renaissance, born in Gualdo Tadino (Perugia), was chief physician at the court of Pope Sixtus V. Fourth edition of his masterpiece, originally published in 1585, illustrated with the portraits (medallions) of the 56-year-old author and botanist Giacomo Antonio Cortuso (1513-1603), on the back of the title page; disseminated throughout the text, 933 xilographies (only five non-botanical ones). On the front page, the mark of the Sessas, a prestigious Venetian printing house from the 16th and 17th centuries, featuring a cat with a mouse in its mouth, with the motto "Dissimiliem in fidas sotieas". At the end there is an addendum with "Figvre aggivnte senza discorsi", with 52 engravings on 10 sheets. On the back of the last page, a register and a colophon: "In Trevigia Apresso Angelo Reghettini. Per li Sessa. MDCXVII". Edition with numerous pagination errors, the most important of which are: p. 108 to 119; p. 286 to 289. The copy, slightly handled, has section I bound after section K, but it is complete. Slight browning and marginal imperfections in the last 12 leaves.; occasional minor tears, but with support; some uncontemporary annotations. Full sheepskin contemporary binding slightly worn and lacking the flyleaves. The collation corresponds exactly to that given in "The Cleveland Herbal, Botanical, and Horticultural Collection" (The Kent State University Press, 1992), 165. Pritzel, 2552.

First edition of the first part, published in the year after the author's death (1706-1790) and two years before the English language edition. The translation is by Jacques Gibelin, possibly made from one of the two manuscripts the author sent to France, asking a friend for an opinion. Complete copy, with two parts: the first (156 p.) covers the period from 1706 to 1731, while the second (207 p.) is a continuation of the first, by Wilmer (see footnote at the beginning of the second part). Benjamin Franklin, one of the most prominent figures of the American Revolution, in addition to being known for his experiments with electricity, was also the first US ambassador to France. The work has already been considered "The Most Widely Read of All American Autobiographies, The Gift to Adolescents of Innumerable Parents ... this book holds the essence of the American way of life" (Grolier, A treasury of American literature, 21). Copy a little trimmed, but keeping good margins; slight foxing and handling; occasional minor stains. Ex-libris of Emílio Monteiro. Original edition of the French translation of a collection of reports (and letters) sent by the missionaries of the Society of Jesus in Ethiopia, Brazil and Orient to the General of the Society in Rome, Mutio Vitelleschi. Includes the following reports: "Relation de la Mission [...] en Ethiopie dés années 1621. 1622. & 1623. (pp. 1 a 170); Relation des choses qui sont arrivées en la Province de Goa, l’an 1620 [a 1624]". (pp. 171 a 451). From pp. 145 to 171 appears a summary of the letters sent from Brazil, in the year 1621, signed by Fr. Michel Baraiio? (Fr. Manuel de Araújo), Par commission du R.P.R. Ferdinand (Fernão) Cardin. Other letters emanate from the Ceylon missions (Fr. Tomás de Barros); Macau (Fr. Gaspar Luís), Goa, Salcete, Daman, Diu, Cochim (Fr. Francisco Machado), etc., and also a list of the miracles of St. Francis Xavier (pp. 250 to 258), a letter from Fr. ENCYCLOPÉDIE, ou dictionnaire universel raisonné des connoissances humaines: suplément / mis en ordre par M. de Felice.- Yverdon: s.n. [Fortunato de Felice], 1770-1780.- 58 vols.: il.; 25 cm.- E.
Fortunato Bartolomeo de Felice (1723-1789), philosopher, scientist and editor, born in Rome but based in Yverdon (Switzerland), gathered a team of about three dozen collaborators who, between 1770 and 1780, published the "Enclopédie d 'Yverdon". The project, of great editorial scope, although inspired by the counterpart of Diderot and d'Alembert, followed a different orientation, less anti-religious and more tolerant and came to have great acceptance and popularity in the Protestant countries of Northern Europe. Complete set, consisting of the following 58 volumes: 42 volumes of text (1770-1775); six volumes of supplement to the texts (1775-1776); 10 volumes of engravings (1775-1780), together with the respective pages of descriptive text, containing a total of 1242 copperplate prints (alias 1240), 125 of which are doubles, eight triples and one quadruple, all very well folded; the remaining prints, simple ones, are full page. Apparently, the set lacks only one print: engraving VII of ch. XIII ("Fonte des cloches"), from volume IV. Exceptionally clean copy, lightly trimmed, with carmine edge. All volumes feature the typographed label of D. Lourenço de Lima on the back cover and the label of the Bookstore of Dr. José Joaquim Lopes Praça on the title pages (sometimes also on the label). Full flecked sheepskin (identical) bindings of the time, with the slight worn spines, especially those of the first 20 volumes of text; they keep the original endpapers in marbled paper.

The translator was born in Minas Gerais in 1750 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1805. According to Borba de Moraes, he attended the University of Coimbra (1769-1777) where he obtained a doctorate in Mathematics. Returned to Lisbon in 1790, he was a professor at the Royal Naval Academy, for whose students the work (original by Englishman George Atwood) was published. In 1798 he was appointed governor of the Captaincy of Espírito Santo (Brazil). The copperplate prints represent XXVIII geometric figures or “propositions” discussed in the text. Engravings with slight foxing, the last one badly folded. For the rest, a slightly trimmed but clean copy. Recent full sheepskin binding, with patina and gold decoration in the manner of the period. First and only published part of the most famous Portuguese calligraphy treatise. Complete copy, preserving all the copperplate prints: engraved title with the coat of arms of Portugal over Lisbon, the author's portrait (signed by B. Picart), the calligraphed figure of the knight and the 44 engravings numbered from 1 to 44. Manuel de Andrade de Figueiredo (1670-1735), a leading figure in the calligraphic art of the seventeenth century, laid the foundations for teaching the so-called “Portuguese calligraphic type”. His manual is divided into four parts: the first dedicated to teaching Portuguese spoken and written language; the second presents the different types of letters used at the time; the third establishes the rules of Portuguese spelling; the fourth teaches the basics of arithmetic. The pictures represent calligraphy exercises for students, notions of types design and alphabets of various styles. Two handwritten ownerships on the title page; last section with slight signs of handling; occasional slight stains. First edition of one of the classic works of Portuguese poetry from the 16th century, according to many the one where Renaissance bucolicism acquires purest and clearest expression. Diogo Bernardes (ca. 1530-ca. 1594), a native of Ponte da Barca, accompanied King D. Sebastião on the tragic journey to Africa, having been captive and rescued only in 1581. He had a friendly relationship with Sá de Miranda and António Ferreira and his models are those of the Renaissance: Petrarch, Garcilaso, Tasso and the Latin classics. Wrong foliation from sheet 101 (wrongly numbered 111). Slightly trimmed volume (carmine edges), but clean. Ex-libris of Aucíndio Rodrigues da Silva. Original edition of the first description of the Kingdom of Congo, by the Portuguese explorer and merchant Duarte Lopes (fl. 1578), born in Benavente. The author, who left Lisbon for Africa in 1578, would occupy an influential position with the Catholic King of Congo, D. Álvaro, who commissioned him to represent him with Philip II of Spain and Pope Sixtus V. Upon his arrival in Rome, Duarte Lopes met the Italian humanist and traveler Filippo Pigafetta (1533-1604) to whom he dictated his narrative, which he published in the present edition in 1591. The work achieved great success, having been translated into several languages and integrated in the first part of Theodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", published in 1597 (in German) and in 1598 (in Latin). The edition opens with a copperplate printed architectural frontispiece (verso in white), which includes the coat of arms of D. Antonio Migliore, bishop of San Marco to whom it was dedicated; followed by the dedication (f. [2 and 3]), dated 7 August 1591, and the "Tavola de’ capitoli" (f. [4]); the text extends over the next 82 pages and ends with a record (f. k6r, blank verso). At the end, there are eight double-page engravings (22x33 cm) representing a palm tree, a zebra and indigenous customs (6). The two fold-out maps of Congo and Africa, which unfortunately are not present, should also be found at the end of the volume. Second engraving (zebra) with missing lower margin. Exemplary with some foxing and occasional tidal stains on the lower margin (and some corners) of about 16 leaves. Some minor imperfections that do not affect the integrity of the volume. Full flexible parchment contemporary binding, with damage to the lower half of the spine (recoverable). It retains the original endpapers (with a French bookseller's stamp on the first pastedown). Enforcement charter of nobility (or letter of coat of arms, or charter of nobility) granted in the name of the Council of His Excellency El-Rei Dom Filipe II, of Spain, to the brothers Gaspar Diaz and Baltazar Diaz, neighbours of the village of Pueblo de Alcocer , jurisdiction of Granada, by the doctor and fiscal attorney of the court of Don Gaspar de Navarrete. In the end: "Dada en la dicha ciudad de Granada a cinco dias del mes de octubre, año del Señor de Mill y quinhientos y setenta y ocho años". Executory letters of nobility were introduced during the reign of Fernando and Isabel, the Catholic Monarchs, and continued to be produced until the 19th century. They witnessed the blood cleansing of the applicants and their ancestors, as well as their faith, free from any heresy. At the same time, they defined their weapons and established the right to use them. The document is developed on 47 sheets of parchment, carefully ruled and calligraphed in Gothic type, the last three being occupied by various stamps and apostilles. In the first two folios we find two large full-page illuminations (31x22 cm), with the following four representations: on the back of the first folio the Virgin and Child Jesus, with the applicants Gazpar and Baltazar Diaz at her feet (upper half of the page) ; the respective coat of arms (lower half); in front of the second folio, Jesus Christ on the Cross, with three knights at his feet in prayer, probably the king and the petitioners (upper half); Santiago fighting the infidels (lower half). The four paintings are separated longitudinally by a stripe with the caption "Don Philipe por la Gracia de Dios". The text is ornamented by 16 capitulars decorated with plant motifs on a pink background (most occupying eight lines), the last being on the back of f. 43, illuminated with the representation of King D. Filipe (65x68). Perfectly readable text. The two large illuminations and the last capitular, worn, with signs of abrasion. A little disjointed and dusty volume (requiring consolidation and surface cleaning), retaining the original seam and cord. Entire binding of parchment, recent, with the original endpapers, glued to the back cover.

Father António Cordeiro (1641-1722), a Jesuit, born in Angra de Heroísmo, based himself on the manuscript, then unpublished, of Father Gaspar Frutuoso (c.1522-c.1591), "Saudades da Terra", which was found in the bookstore of the Ponta Delgada Jesuit College (currently at the Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive). Divided into nine books, the work does not only refer to the Azores, but also to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and Porto Santo. Very clean copy with good margins. 16th century work of great importance for the knowledge of the evolution of the Portuguese language, whose author (1530-1608), a scholarly historian, born in Évora, in addition to grammatical, orthographic and lexicographical aspects, sometimes controversial, develops a text full of the erudition that characterizes him as a Renaissance Man. Duarte Nunes, a law graduate and judge of the Casa da Suplicação (Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Portugal at the time), on the death of Cardinal King D. Henrique, warmly embraced the cause of Filipe II of Spain, whose right to succession he defended in writing against those who challenged him. The copy, slightly trimmed, but complete and solid, presents, bound at the end, a group of 150 leaves corresponding to the (complete) text of the original edition of "Origem da língua portuguesa", by the same author, published in Lisbon, in 1606, only missing the eight preliminary pages, including the title page. Scarce marginal wormholes. Title page with trimmed initials (from the period) and monogrammatic stamp of the House of Palmela; ownership of the first half of the 19th century(?) on the back cover: "De João de Sousa Pinto de Magalhães". Jerónimo Corte-Real (ca. 1533-1588), poet and painter of Renaissance humanism, born in Lisbon, whose most famous work, "Sucesso do segundo cerco de Diu" (Lisbon, 1574), was dedicated to King D. Sebastião. First edition of a tragic poem in seventeen cantos, considered by many to be the most beautiful in the Portuguese language, after "Os Lusíadas". The paper is light weight, so some sections are a little fragile. Copy trimmed with tangential loss of some signatures and claims. Other imperfections: marginal restoration on leaves 25 and 26 (D1 and D2); leaf 46 (F6) with central damage slightly affecting the text; lower margins of last 12 jagged leaves; slight browning and occasional tidal stains. It is, however, complete and solid, requiring intervention. Heraldic ex-libris of Pedro de Carvalho Burnay. António Luís († ca. 1565), an illustrious physician with encyclopedic knowledge, a follower of the Galenist current, was born in Lisbon probably in the early years of the 16th century. A leading figure in Portuguese Renaissance humanism, with a deep knowledge of Greek language and philosophy, he was known as “The Greek” and nicknamed by Amato Lusitano "utriusque linguae doctissimes". Excellent set of three scientific works published in their original editions. The first two works feature woodcut architectural frontispieces, with the motto Mvsis dicatvm, on the pediments. In the third, the title page is typed. All feature the printer's mark Luís Rodrigues, at the end. Slight (tide) stain on the last two sections; it belongs to the 19th century manuscript, on the title page of the first work ("Dr. J[os]e Fructuoso Ayres de Gouveea Osorio") and the manuscript index on the flyleaf. Otherwise a very clean copy with good margins. Contemporary full sheepskin binding with reconstructed covers, but retaining the original endpapers. The set includes not only the period immediately after the earthquake of November 1, 1755, but also the first seven years of the Court's stay in Rio de Janeiro, although all the diplomas were apparently printed in Lisbon. The nine volumes, slightly trimmed, are exceptionally clean and maintain good margins. Volume I with a manuscript, from the time, on the title page (Serpa?); volume IX has 28 leaves with the lower outside corners cut, without ever affecting the text; very few traces of worm work, confined to the endpapers of three volumes and no more than six leaves (in more than 6,000) of so many other diplomas contiguous to the endpapers (negligible and marginal traces). Identical entire sheepskin bindings of the time (first quarter of the 19th century), preserving the original endpapers, with traces of worm work on the spines and some weak joints.

Wenceslau Ramirez de Villa Urrutia, Spanish historian, diplomat and politician, born in La Habana (Cuba). An outstanding personality in Spanish political and cultural life, he was minister plenipotentiary in Constantinople, Athens Brussels, ambassador in Vienna, London, Rome and Paris; life senator and minister of state (Alfonso XII, 1905); member of the Royal Academy of History; awarded in 1913 with the title of Marquis de Villa Urrutia. Sets of approximately 200 documents, including 164 autograph and typewritten letters, addressed to D. Wenceslau, dealing with diplomatic and state affairs, some of which are equally private and reserved. We highlight the documents emanating from the following institutions and personalities: 1 - El Presidente del Consejo de Ministers (19 letters); 2 - El Ministro y Subsecretario of State (32); 3 - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lisbon (7); 4 - Private Secretariat of H.M., Madrid (8); 5 - Senate (4); 6 - Embajada de España cerca de la Santa Sede (6); 7- Deputados à Corte (6); 8 - El Ministro de Gracia y Justicia (6), etc. Other institutions represented: Embajada de España en Italia, Brasil e Paris (on the visit of the King of Spain to France in 1905); Legación de España en Washington, San Salvador, Constantinople, Hendaya, etc. The set also includes numerous private letters, sometimes difficult to identify, sent from various hotels in Europe, telegrams and some drafts. We also highlight: a set of 16 documents referring to the knighthood of the Order of Isabel the Catholic, attributed to the Portuguese António de Oliveira Calem; three letters on the fishing agreement in the River Minho (1898); etc., etc. Set of undeniable interest for the diplomatic history of Spain, especially for the period corresponding to the first third of the 20th century, placed inside two iron-locked covers with micas, with most of the documents identified and organized by entities and personalities.

Original edition a monumental and consecrated work on the theme of military cavalry. The author (1721-1788) was a Cavalry Officer in the French Army during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) where the superiority of the Prussian Cavalry was evident, so he decided to publish the present treaty, in order to reform and reorganize the French Cavalry. The complete volume of text, slightly handled, but clean, includes an allegorical title and 11 copperplate prints (eight of double-leaf), in addition to two large vignettes, one on the title page and one at the end (21x17 cm) representing a formation of four battalions. The atlas volume, with a maximum folio format, also complete, consists of 32 engravings, 29 of which are double (±96x65 cm) and three fold-outs, XIV, XV and XXV (±178x65 cm). Plates a little handled and dusty, with occasional minor stains and tears, especially in the folds, but without lack of support. The two volumes lined with different period bindings: the first, with ex-libris of the Bibliothèque du Maréchal Jourdan, presents a conventional slightly mottled tobacco sheepskin binding, a little worn but recoverable; the atlas volume, with two ex-libris of the marquis and the Count of San Payo, in full burgundy shagreen binding, presenting, in the centre of both covers, an unidentified French heraldic book stamp with a duke's crown(? ) and two necklaces of honorary orders. Both retain the original endpapers: on blue paper (à la colle), in the first volume; on blue satin paper (moirée), in the atlas. Mennessier de La Lance, I, p. 408/409.
