The work describes the pastoral journey of the Archbishop of Goa, D. Pedro de Meneses, O.S.A. (1559-1617), to the ancestral community of Christians from St. Thomas on the Malabar coast (Querala, India), which followed the traditional Syriac-Chaldean rite. It is, therefore, of the greatest importance for the history of this Christian Church in the East, of which previously little or nothing was known. The author (16th century-1628), born in Beja, professed in 1591 at the Hermits of St Agustine, at the Graça Monastery in Lisbon; in 1602 he was part of an embassy to the Shah of Persia, whose account can be read in book III of the present Journey; shortly thereafter he was appointed Bishop of Cyrene and Apostolic Nuncio to the Shah of Persia. As usual, the volume includes, with its own title page and independent foliation, the "Synodo diocesano da Igreja e Bispado de Angamale dos antigos christãos de Sam Thome das Serras do Malauar das partes da India Oriental ([2], 62 f.), seguindo-se a Missa de qve vsam os antigos christãos de São Thome do Bispado de Angamale..." ([9] f.). Copy with some browning and occasional marginal restoration, namely on the title page. Ex-libris of Miguel de Faria. 20th century full sheepskin binding with Miguel de Faria's heraldic book stamps gold engraved on the centre of both covers; slightly worn spine. Inocêncio, I, p. 151.
