MANUSCRITO.- ANDRADE, Bernardim Freire de (Tenente-General).- Cópia do processo.- Século XIX (1809-1810).- 1 vol. (cerca de 800 p.); 31 cm.- E.
Bernardim Freire de Andrade (1759-1809), general officer of the Portuguese Army, born in Lisbon, assassinated during the Peninsular War. Authentic copy, at the request of José Gomes Freire de Andrade (Principal Freire who would become president of the Provisional Board), taken from the War Council process in which his brother, lieutenant general Bernardim Freire de Andrade, was sentenced and rehabilitated “atroz e barbaramente assassinado no dia 17 de Março de 1809, para ser prezentada a Vª. A. R. [o Príncipe Regente], cujo Regio conceito importa tanto à memória do defunto general e à honra da consternada família e outro sim outra cópia igual para ser guardada no Cartório da sua caza”. The request was the subject of an order dated January 28, 1810. The sentence determined that the lieutenant general's military conduct was not only irreproachable, but worthy of much praise. Volume with more than 800 pages, probably written in one hand. At the end, a closing statement dated from the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs and War, March 12, 1810. Autograph signature: Gregório Gomes da Silva. Document with very slight browning, fully legible. A modest contemporary binding, with a sheepskin spine, without any label, with traces of wormholes.

The first volume([12], XIV, 607 p.) is illustrated with 4 hand-coloured aquatints representing many other degrees of torture during the Inquisition, 2 numismatic engravings and 14 watercoloured maps and plans of cities and troop movements. Very rare original edition of an important letter addressed by King D. Manuel I to Pope Leo proudly announcing the recent successes of Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) in India and the East Indies, with particular emphasis on the conquest of Malacca in 1511. The small leaflet consists of a single section with six leaves (A6 signatures), with 11 printed pages (the last one blank) and the following colophon at the end: Romæ printed per Iacobum Mazochium .9. Augusti. A second edition of this same epistle was published in Vienna, Austria, on September 16th (just 36 days after the first), by the printers Hieronymus Vietor & Johannes Singriener. The copy, slightly cropped, but very clean, has a small central flaw on the title page, repaired on the back, without loss of support; the same flaw, with less extension, is repeated in the next leaf. Full blue morocco binding, probably from the 20th century, signed: Bound by Zaehnsdorf. London. England. (workshop active between 1842 and 1947). Covers with triple square fillet and the Manueline coat of arms, in the centre, gold engraved; gold stipple on the thickness of the boards and gilt edges. The rear board has a pocket, possibly for storing a document, but it is empty. We are not aware of the existence of any copy in mainland Portuguese libraries (public or private), having only found two copies of the same edition in the Public Library and Regional Archive of Ponta Delgada (quotas: Safe 110 RES and JC/ AR.2 A/390 RES), the second of which belongs to the José do Canto Collection. Library of Congress (for the only copy referenced outside Portugal), DP605. M357 1513.

Rare translation of one of the best-known works by a scholar born in Spalato (1450-1524), in Dalmatia (today Split, Croatia), who lived the last years of his life in isolation to dedicate himself to the study of Theology. It is also an important 16th century Portuguese species, with an interesting xilo-typographic arrangement on the title page, of which there are two variants (see BN, 495/496). The present copy appears, however, to be a mix of both, as it has the last page numbered 295 and a single section c. Copy a little cropped and handled; old scratched ownership and small ink stain on title page; last page with rough restoration on the verso, slightly affecting the text (on the recto) and several inscriptions and scribbles on the verso. 17th century (?), full sheepskin binding, with some damage to the spine, but recoverable. Edition of excellent graphic quality, dedicated to King D. João VI, illustrated with two portraits (of the author and the translator) and four copperplate prints, one at the beginning of each of the four epistles that make up the poem. Francisco Bento (1756-1827), 2nd baron and only viscount of S. Lourenço, was born in Lisbon, son of an Italian father; a staunch supporter of absolute power, he arrived in Brazil in 1783; in 1821 he accompanied the royal family on the return trip to Portugal, having not been allowed to disembark, so he went into exile in Paris, where he lived until the end of his days. The collection of the three volumes is as follows: I - XXIV, 380 p.: 2 portraits; 2 engravings; II - [4], 232 p.: 1 engraving; III - [4], 331, [1 br.] p.: 1 engraving. A masterpiece of elegance and refinement, entirely engraved in copperplate print, it took more than 10 years for the publisher to complete the edition. Etienne Fessard (1714-1777) himself was responsible for opening the 238 compositions in verse (in 724 pages) on a copper plate, while the 243 figures, 243 vignettes and 229 “culs-de-lampe” were written by the engraver François Montulay. Very clean copy, from the first and most popular edition, keeping all the proofs (text and illustrations) very fresh. Good bindings, full morocco “vieux rouge”, unsigned, but probably made in France at the beginning of the 20th century (?); top folder of the first volume loose; triple fillets and “dents-de-rat” on the covers, panels closed in gold with florets on the spine sections; rolls on the squares and thickness of the boards; impeccable gilt edges. Of this edition, said Gordon Ray (The art of the French illustrated book. New York, 1982), which ranks among the one hundred most beautiful French illustrated books of the 18th and 19th centuries. The third volume was printed at Oficina de Miguel Soares. First and only Portuguese translation by D. Maria Antonia de S. Jean-François de Galaup, count of La Pérouse (1741-1788), officer of the French Navy, born in Albi, was chosen by Louis XVI to command the famous expedition around the world, whose objective was to complete the discoveries of Captain James Cook in the Pacific Ocean. The expedition, made up of 220 men and the frigates La Boussole and L'Astrolabe, left Brest on August 1, 1785 but, following a storm off the islands of Vanikoro (Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon's Archipelago, in Melanesia), in July 1788, the two ships sank, losing almost the entire crew. On April 22, 1791, a decree from the French National Assembly ordered the publication of the expedition report, with General Louis Marie de Milet de Mureau (1751-1825) in charge of writing it. Original edition, consisting of four volumes of text and one atlas, with the following collation. Tome premier: [4], LXXII, 346 p.: 1 portrait; Take second: [4], 398, [1, 1 br.] p.; Take troisieme: [4], 422, [1, 1 br.] p.; Take quatrieme: [4], 309, [1 br.] p; [atlas volume]: 1 portrait, 1 engraved allegorical title, 69 engravings and maps. Of the 69 engravings in the atlas, 29 are mostly fold-out maps, some large, with occasional tears in the folds in the larger ones, without lack of support. The rest represent, above all, uses and customs of the people of the Northwest of the South Pacific (Melanesia). Slightly cropped, but very clean volumes of text; engravings and atlas maps equally clean and well folded, uncropped, preserving all the original margins intact. Recent bindings, with patina, ornamental gold border on the covers and smooth spines decorated in gold, the manner of the period. Brunet, III, coll. 828. Sabin, 38960.

CAMÕES, Luís de.- OS LVSIADAS | DE LVIS DE CAMÕES. | ¶ Agora de nouo impresso, com algu[m]as Annota- | ções, de diuersos Autores. This is the famous Piscos edition, considered by experts, booksellers and collectors as the rarest of all editions of “Os Lusíadas”. According to some investigators, it is probably the true second edition, refering one of the two editions dated 1572 to a date not before 1584. The explanation of the unusual denomination is as follows: on page 76 (f.), in the first two verses of stanza 65, in song III, wrongly numbered 47, the Poet, when celebrating the victories of King D. Afonso Henriques, writes: “Com estas sojugada foy Palmella, | E a piscosa Cizimbra...” which, at the foot of the same page, the commentator’s note, explains: “Chama piscosa, porq[ue] em certo te[m]po se ajunta ali gra[n]de ca[n]tidade de piscos (birds), pera se passare[m] a Affrica”. Copy slightly cropped (without affecting the text), with old ownership (unreadable) between the first two lines of the title page (with very light stains). Otherwise, a very clean example, with gilt edges (old). Modern pencil inscription on external free endpaper: Purchased by (unreadable) A. Henriques de Oliveira from Francisco Cordeiro de Sousa. Recent binding, full flexible parchment. Anselmo, 738. Biblioteca Nacional (16th Century), 117. José do Canto, 8. Biblioteca D. Manuel II, 83.
