SPENCER, John.- [...] De Legibus Hebræorum ritualibus earumque rationibus, libro quatuor. Ad nuperam cantabrigiensem, in qua liber quartus, varia capita & dissertationes aliaque autoris supplementa, accessere, accurate reformata...- Tubingæ: Sumptibus Johannis Georgii Cottæ, A. MDCCXXXII. [1732].- [38], 1232, [30] p. 1 retrato; 40 cm.- E. John Spencer (1630-1693), English clergyman and academic, born in Bocton (Kent), was appointed rector of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in 1667, a position he held until the end of his life. Third edition, enlarged, of his most important work (the first two were published in 1685 and 1727) and also the most controversial, where the author seeks to demonstrate the Egyptian origin of the laws and rituals of the Hebrews and that Judaism is not the oldest world religion. Copy with some browning, sometimes strong, preserving the rare portrait of the author. Title page with former ownership “Da Livraria do Collº de Sta. Rita de Coimbra” and white seal of “Joaquim de Vasconcellos - Porto”. Good binding of the time, full rigid parchment, with double squares and large blind florets (in blocking press), in the center of the covers. Brunet, V, coll. 486.
