LANDMANN, George Thomas.- Historical, military and picturesque observations on Portugal, illustrated by seventy-five coloured plates, including authentic plans of the sieges and battles fought in the Peninsula during the late war.- London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818.- 2 vols.: il.; 37 cm.- E. The author (1779-1854) was an engineer and lieutenant colonel in the British Army, with the same military rank in the Spanish Engineering Corps. The first volume aims to give an overview of the history of Portugal, while the second seeks to provide a wide range of local information that could be useful for military purposes, as well as for travelers and other readers. The work can be considered as one of the largest typographic enterprises in its style. The second volume ([4], XII, [2], 293. [3 br.], 203, [1 br.], 132 p.) presents another 55 colored aquatints representing views of Portuguese locations. The second volume also includes a double engraving, of Alcácer do Sal, not registered in the index but referred to by Tooley as nº 25. Complete and very clean copy, just cropped at the head (gilt edges). Contemporary Moroccan half-bindings. Tooley, nº 291 (The most beautiful illustrated book on Portugal of the period). Duarte de Sousa, II, p. 398.
