CAMÕES, Luís de.- OS LVSIADAS | DE LVIS DE CAMÕES. | ¶ Agora de nouo impresso, com algu[m]as Annota- | ções, de diuersos Autores. [gravura xilográfica com a marca do impressor] | ¶ Com licença do Supremo Conselho da Sancta | & Geral [In]quisição...- Em Lisboa: Por Manoel de Lyra, 1584.- [12], 280 f.; 12 cm.- E. This is the famous Piscos edition, considered by experts, booksellers and collectors as the rarest of all editions of “Os Lusíadas”. According to some investigators, it is probably the true second edition, refering one of the two editions dated 1572 to a date not before 1584. The explanation of the unusual denomination is as follows: on page 76 (f.), in the first two verses of stanza 65, in song III, wrongly numbered 47, the Poet, when celebrating the victories of King D. Afonso Henriques, writes: “Com estas sojugada foy Palmella, | E a piscosa Cizimbra...” which, at the foot of the same page, the commentator’s note, explains: “Chama piscosa, porq[ue] em certo te[m]po se ajunta ali gra[n]de ca[n]tidade de piscos (birds), pera se passare[m] a Affrica”. Copy slightly cropped (without affecting the text), with old ownership (unreadable) between the first two lines of the title page (with very light stains). Otherwise, a very clean example, with gilt edges (old). Modern pencil inscription on external free endpaper: Purchased by (unreadable) A. Henriques de Oliveira from Francisco Cordeiro de Sousa. Recent binding, full flexible parchment. Anselmo, 738. Biblioteca Nacional (16th Century), 117. José do Canto, 8. Biblioteca D. Manuel II, 83.
