The copy belonged to the private library of King D. Manuel II and bears its ex-libris on the verso of both covers, as well as the topographical pencil annotation Kl. Bibl., L 5, on the verso of both title pages. Slight foxing and slight signs of handling. Red morocco half-bindings, signed Fock (fl. First edition of the Italian version of the “Prontuário das medalhas”, the most famous typographic and intellectual production of the printer and humanist Guillaume Rouillé (circa 1518-1589) who, having worked initially in Paris, settled permanently in Lyon from 1545. Rouillé was privileged to publish the work in Latin, French, Italian and Castilian, the first three versions having been published in 1553 and the Castilian only in 1561. The edition is illustrated with 950 medals (two per page), with portraits of men and distinguished women, accompanied by short biographical notes, beginning with Adam and Eve and ending with Henry II of France. The second part, with an independent title page and pagination, constitutes, with the first, a single typographic unit. Copy lightly cropped, with a slight (tidal) stain on the lower outer corner, about half the volume. Small wormholes next to the backbone in about 20 sheets of the second part, extending into a single hole on both sides. Two old handwritten ownerships on the title page. Full sheepskin binding, probably from the 18th century, a little worn, retaining the original endpapers. Brunet, IV, 900.

Complete set of this very important monumental work, whose publication did not go beyond four volumes (here bound in five) which have the following subtitles: I - Scriptores (vol. I and II, 3 fasc., 1856-1864, 420 p.); II - Leges et consvetvdines (vol. I and II, 6 fasc. + 1 of indexes, 1856-1873, 980, [3], 100 p.); III - Diplomata et chartae (vol. I, 4 fasc., 1868-1873, 564 p.); IV - Inquisitiones (vol. I, 9 fasc., 1891-1977, 1553, [2] p.). The project, initially coordinated by Alexandre Herculano, consisted in the publication of the most important documentary sources in our history. Volume II of “Leges et consvetvdines” is bound in volume “Scriptores”. The vast majority of fascicles retain both brochure covers. Half red morocco bindings, with gold tooling on the spines (joints with some wear).

Pedro Afonso de Vasconcelos (16th century), born in Leiria, with a degree in Canons from the University of Coimbra, was a family member of the house of D. Teotónio of Braganza, Archbishop of Évora. Although the first testimonies of the presence of hermits in Serra d'Ossa date back to the 4th century, it was only in 1536 that the Congregation of the Poor of Jesus Christ was founded, by a bull of Pope Paul III, attributing to the hermits of Serra d'Ossa the rule of St. Augustine. In 1578, Pope Gregory XIII, through the intervention of Cardinal D. Henrique, integrated the community into the congregation of the Hermits of St. Paul, making the privileges of the mendicant orders applicable to them. The Father Master Henrique de Santo António (1682-1783), in the century Manuel Armão, born in Cascais, in addition to being a chronicler, was a qualifier of the Holy Office, examiner of the three military orders, rector of the Monastery of Lisbon and, twice, general of the order. The collation of each volume is as follows: I - [68], 986 p.: 1 engraved title; II - [32], 961, [1 br,] p.: 1 engraved title. The original of the third volume was completed, but disappeared in the earthquake of 1755, according to some, or it has been printed and no copies are known, according to others. Both volumes are illustrated with the same engraved title, between the half-title and the title page, representing the Serra d’Ossa and its monastery. Exceptional copy (it will have been washed eventually), with impeccably gilt edges, lined with magnificent full green morocco bindings, signed Rousselle, Parisian bookbinder from the second half of the 19th century; gold tooling on the spine, rool on the squares and watered silk endpapers. Volume consisting of four parts, corresponding respectively to “Os Lusíadas” and to the three parts of “Rimas”. These works often go together and present difficulties in collation or some faults, but the set is complete, matching exactly the descriptions in the catalogue of José do Canto's collection (Nos 36, 33, 35 and 34). Bottom margin of the first title page, reinforced, hiding ownership. A wormehole affecting the first 50 sheets. Title page and next page of the second part of the “Rimas” from another copy (shorter). In the end, 12 leaves with some stains on the outer margin. Although cropped and with the imperfections registered, the specimen is very well preserved and is lined with full sheepskin binding from the 19th century, with a mottled patine, preserving the original endpapers. Giovanni Pietro Maffei (1533-1603), a Jesuit historian, born in Bergamo, was, for two centuries, the main biographer of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. At the invitation of Cardinal D. Henrique, he lived in Portugal, between 1579 and 1584, with the purpose of writing a history of the Portuguese missions in America, India and Japan; the result was his masterpiece originally published in Florence under the title “Historiarum Indicarum Libri XVI” (1588), which was to achieve great success, with numerous editions (and translations), of which this is the second. The first edition does not include the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, now published for the first time, occupying pp. 566 to 688. The pp. 403 to 556 are part of a set of letters from Jesuits from India that are presented with a separator and their own title: “Selectarum epistolarum ex India liber III”. Slightly cropped specimen, with a tidal stain in the upper half of the volume, fading progressively until disappearing in the second half of the volume. Good contemporary binding (or a little later), fully vieux rouge shagreen, with gold tooling à la Duseuil: triple fillet on the borders and in the central rectangle, with florets at the corners. At the centre of both covers, a large oval tool with a small reserve in which a heart pierced with an arrow is inserted, symbol of divine love, probably of a religious order (Franciscans?). Original edition of a libel by the Bishop of Silves (1506-1580) as part of the controversy caused by the letter of D. Jerónimo Osório addressed to Elizabeth I, of England, published in Lisbon in 1562 and then republished and translated in Venice, Louvain and Paris. The queen instructed Walter Haddon (1515-1572), a renowned lawyer and Latinist, to respond to Osório, which happened in 1564/65 with the famous “Apologetic Epistle”. This is the Portuguese bishop's reply to the English scholar's letter. Copy somewhat cropped and handled, with occasional minor stains, but complete and solid. Title page and next page with two small faults, one marginal and the other harming a letter in the first line of the title; rare contemporary underscores. Full sheepskin binding, from the 17th/18th century, with a worn but recoverable spine, without endpapers. Homage of the author (1684-1749), 3rd Duke of Cadaval, to his father D. Nuno Alvares Pereira de Mello (1638-1727), 1st Duke of Cadaval. Large printing work, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, a portrait of the biographee, a large folding engraving representing the funeral procession of D. Nuno, and 33 figures, also of funeral inspiration, distributed over 27 engraved sheets, three of which are folding, one of double page, 12 with two per page and the remaining 17 of full page. It also includes several decorative vignettes and copperplate engraved letterhead initials. All engravings are signed by [François] Harrewijn (Ernesto Soares, p. 332). The portrait, representing the 88-year-old Duke, was engraved following a drawing by Quillard. Mirrored folding engraving (between pages 54 and 55) with restored folds. Old ownership handwritten, on the half-title page. First leaves with slight signs of handling, otherwise a clean copy with large margins, with all the engravings very fresh. Full sheepskin contemporary binding or a little later, bearing in the centre of both covers, with gold tooling, the crowned monogrammatic book stamps of the Dukes of Lafões (probably modernly gauffered). First edition of one of the most beautiful productions of Portuguese presses from the seventeenth century and a fundamental work for the history of Brazil (in the title page it has the indication of the first volume, but it was the only one published). In his introduction, Father Simão de Vasconcelos (1597-1671), rector of the schools of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, proposes the theory that the Earthly Paradise would be located in Portuguese America. Although the licenses were granted between May 18, 1661 and November 7, 1662 (?), the visiting priest considered that such assertion was contrary to the dogmas of the Catholic faith and demanded that such a passage be suppressed. Thus, in all known copies, the pagination jumps from p. 178 to p. 185. However, in the present copy, the two leaves corresponding to pp. 185 to 188, are also missing.. At the end, between pages 481 and 528, it includes the Latin poem "De Beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria", by Father José de Anchieta SJ, who composed it «...quando esteve em refens entre Indios barbaros, com a ajuda da Virgem, escrevendo na praia em lugar de papel, que alli não tinha, nem tinta». Copy a little cropped (carmine edges) and with slight foxing; occasional minor restorations. Keeps the engraved title very fresh and with good margins. Rare edition of a poem in five cantos of the ottava rima, dedicated to D. Gaspar de Guzman, Count of Olivares, showing his coat of arms, copperplate engraved, on the back of the title page (with Lievendal fec. subscription). The author, of whom little is known, was born in Tangier, at the time when this city was under Portuguese rule. Cropped copy, with signs of handling and a small, poorly repaired wormhole on the lower margin of about 20 leaves. Occasional light (tidal) stains. Title page slightly weakened with old inscription on the upper margin and ownership heavily crossed out at the end of the title. Oval stamp on the title page and verso of the last page: Ex Libris Vieira Pinto. Ex-libris of the Livraria de JG Mazziotti Salema Garção on the back cover. Full flecked sheep binding, not contemporary, stained, with worn spine and signs wormholes. First and only Portuguese edition of a free translation from Latin, attributed to Diego Afonso de Miranda, of the oldest biography of Saint Thomas Becket (ca. 1118-1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, assassinated in his cathedral by followers of Henry II, and canonized just three years after his death by Pope Alexander III. With the exception of the preliminary pages, the first lines of the text (p. 1), the colophon (p. cccj) and the current titles and first line of the final Tavoada, all the rest of the text is composed in Gothic rotunda characters. Second 16th century edition, published without the name of the compiler (1498-1573), out of the presses of the Coimbra printer João Álvares, whose authorship was identified by Luís de Matos, in 1983, in the introduction of the facsimile edition of "Sentenças para a ensinança e doutrina do Príncipe D. Sebastião". At the end, the colophon is dated March 20, 1555, while the press foot on the title page indicates MDLIII. The colophon of the Lisbon edition has a printing date of November 13, 1554, which removes any doubt as to the primacy of the publication in relation to the present one. The work, with bilingual text in Latin and Castilian, consists of a collection of quotes from doctors of the Church and classical authors, among which we highlight Plutarch, Seneca, Pliny, Suetonius, Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Plato Aristotle and Erasmus. Copy a little cropped (carmine edges) and with slight foxing. Lightly weakened title page, with a minor central restoration and an old, very faded ownership on the upper margin. First 12 and last six sheets with stain on the lower margin. Some old scratches (reading signs) marking sentences. Ex-libris with unidentified monogram on the back cover. Nineteenth-century binding, full sheepskin, with slight damage to the head of the spine, with gold closed panels, with the talking super-books of the Library of Salvá in the centre of both covers. Pedro Salvá y Mallen (1811-1870), born in Valencia (Spain), notable bookseller and bibliophile, enriched a family library, whose catalogue, containing about 4000 entries, was published posthumously in 1872. The following year, the Library of Salvá, was offered for sale in London and most of the books were acquired by the Malagan bibliophile Ricardo Heredia. Anselmo, 63. Palau, 237498. Fr. Amador Arrais (ca. 1530-1600), Carmelite, figure of great intellectual magnitude in the 16th century and eloquent orator, was a royal preacher, coadjutor of Cardinal D. Henrique and bishop of Portalegre (1581-1596). Original edition of his «Diálogos», a work considered to be a significant milestone in Portuguese Counter-Reformation literature and a document that well reflects the mentality of the time, to which anti-Semitism and a tendency to quote classic authors such as influence of the humanistic current. Title page with restoration on the inner margin, next to the backbone; episcopal coat of arms partially filled in ink; back of last sheet with old handwritten annotations. For the rest, a slightly cropped specimen, with carmine edges, complete, solid and clean. Volume consisting of the fifth Portuguese edition (1564), with two parts, of the catalogue of prohibited books, better known as the Index, together with a copy of the seventh Portuguese edition of the same title, printed in 1597. The first Portuguese edition of the Index was published in 1547, followed by the editions of 1551, 1559 and 1561. The fifth edition is composed of two parts, published simultaneously, the first corresponding to the Roman catalogue and the second to a supplement in Portuguese “com as regras [...] trasladadas em linguage[m] vulgar [...] para proveito daquelles que carecem da lingua latina”. The edition of the Index from 1597 already follows the new Roman catalogue, promulgated at the end of the papacy of Sixtus V and was published at the initiative of the general inquisitor and second bishop of Elvas, D. António de Matos de Noronha (1591-1610). The “Rol dos Livros” has, at the end, the printed signature of the Dominican Inquisitor Fr. Emanuel da Veiga (†1575). At the end of the 1597 Index, the autograph signature of Fr. Francisco Pereira, SJ(?) qualifier and reviewer of the Holy Office. Volume cropped with damage to the xilography frame of the first title page, but not of the other sections that preserve good margins. Some restorations, namely on the two title pages of the first species, on the upper margin of the second page of the first work and on the interior margins of some other sections. It is, however, solid and complete, corresponding exactly to the descriptions given in the “Catálogo dos impressos do século XVI (Tipografia portuguesa)”, from BN. Guillaume du Choul (ca. 1496-1560), French humanist, historian and antiquarian, born in Lyon, known for his extensive medal collection. The edition, consisting of two parts, with independent title pages and pagination, but forming a single typographic unit, is illustrated with a large number of xylographic figures: 554 images of medals, 47 figures in the first part, four of which are full page; 44 full-page figures and five smaller ones, in the second part, emphasizing representations of military themes and images relating to the Roman baths. Copy slightly cropped, but keeping good margins; light handling; smaller (tidal) stains on the last leaves; three sections almost loose. Giovanni Botero (ca.1544-1617), Italian Jesuit, diplomat and intellectual, born in Bene Vagienna (Piedmont), in 1589 published his main work in Venice with the title “Della ragion di Stato”, in which he contrasts a Christian vision to Machiavelli's amoral political philosophy. His “Relationi universali”, also very popular, originally published between 1591 and 1598 and reprinted numerous times, contain descriptions of the main countries and regions of the four continents. Illustrated edition with four fold-out maps (double-page), copperplate engraved, representing the four continents: Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Copy slightly cropped and carefully washed; Cc3 sheet with tear restored, no lack of support; second loose map. Apparently this is an unusual variant of the second printing, with the same date, of the comedies of Simão Machado (f. 1601-1640), a Franciscan religious, of whom little is known, who used, as a rule, the name of Fr. Boaventura Machado. In reality, the title page does not correspond to the description of Inocêncio (I, p. 388 and VIII, p. 403) which indicates “Nesta segunda impressão...”, nor to the copy of the Samodães catalogue (1921), which reproduces a different frontispiece. The collation is also slightly different from those indicated in these two references, as it only includes two preliminary sheets. In the variants with the indication «Segunda impressão» there are three preliminary pages, the second including a dedication to D. Francisco de Sá de Meneses, Count of Penaguião. But the copy exactly matches the description of the BNP copy. The recipient is also mentioned in the frontispiece of the reproduction of Samodães. However, this dedication disappears, both in the preliminary pages and in the titlepage of the present variant. Slightly cropped specimen, with slight foxing and occasional minor stains. Marginal restoration on the last sheet; two small seams in ferrogal paint, causing foxing (f. F6 and H2). Title page with two small patched faults (± 28x21 mm) probably to eliminate stamps from the Livraria de Alcobaça (one is still preserved in front of the second folio). Ex-libris of Aníbal Fernandes Tomás (but not mentioned in his bookstore catalogue). Contemporary binding, full flecked sheepskin, slightly worn, keeping the original endpapers in plain paper.
