CUNHA, D. Rodrigo da.- CATALOGO | E HISTORIA DOS | BISPOS DO PORTO. | Offerecida a Diogo Lopes de Souza, Conde de Miran- | da, & Gouernador da Relação, & caza do | Porto, & seu districto: do Con- | selho de sua Magestade.- Porto: Por Ioaõ Rodriguez, 1623.- [24], 191, [1 br.], 451, [1 br., 83, 1 br.] p.; 25 cm.- E. Original edition of the most prestigious work of the erudite Lisbon prelate, an important character from the first half of the 17th century and the Restoration, who actively contributed to the independence of Portugal. D. Rodrigo da Cunha (1577-1643), in addition to deputy of the Holy Office and inquisitor in Lisbon, was successively bishop of Portalegre (1615-1618), of Oporto (1618-1626), archbishop of Braga (1626-1634) and of Lisbon (1635-1642). Lower margin of the title page carefully redone, tangentially to the xilographic frame. For the rest, a very clean copy, slightly trimmed, with gold tooling. Topographic ex-libris of the Chatsworth Library. Nineteenth-century English-made binding with binding stamp depicting a crowned snake (Duke of Devonshire, Cavendish snake heraldry), engraved in gold on both covers; worn spine, with loose joints. Inocêncio, VII, p.167. Samodães, 973. Ameal, 748. Arouca, C 790. All these references omit the group of 191 pages corresponding to the first part of the work. We think, however, that this is a verification lapse, repeated over and over again.
