Saintmichel, [e outros], 1814.- 95 folhetos e volumes em 13 vols.; 21 cm.- E. Set consisting of 95 titles (leaflets and volumes), printed in Paris in 1814, referring to the political and military events that took place in the French capital during that year. It is recalled that, among other events, Paris was the scene, at the end of March, of the Battle of Paris, which culminated in the occupation of the capital by the coalition forces, composed of Russian, Austrian and Prussian troops. Following this defeat, Napoleon was compelled to sign the Treaty of Fontainebleau and then to his first exile, on the Isle of Elba. There followed troubled months of political and constitutional discussions, some of which degenerated into heated controversies, well represented in the group. F.-B. Constancio; etc., etc. Documents assembled in 13 bound volumes, covered in pink paper (from the time), with handwritten numbers in pencil (!) On the spines (4 to 11, 13 to 16 and 18), sometimes with some foxing. In each volume, the first leaflet features the monogrammatic seal of the House of Palmella on the face. A detailed list of each of the 95 titles can be provided on request.

CHESNEY, Lieut.- Colonel Francis Rawdon.- The expedition for the survey of the rivers Euphrates and Tigris, carried on by order of the British Government, in the years 1835, 1836 and 1837...- London: Longman, 1850.- 2 vols.: il.; 25 cm.- E. Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872), born in Annalong (Ireland), artillery officer, explorer and traveler, best known for having imagined a project for the Suez Canal that was the basis of the undertaking that Ferdinand Lesseps carried out in 1868. The work, initially planned for four volumes, describes the exploration trip through the Euphrates and Tiber valleys, to the Persian Gulf, in search of a solution to shorten the route to India. Chesney then suggested the construction of a railway line that links the Persian Gulf to the closest navigable point on the Euphrates River. The edition also includes numerous woodcut figures in the text. Both volumes feature a printed card and a library stamp with topographical dimensions, (Hawkesyard Library, Rugeley, UK, which was to be demolished in 2008), on the first flyleaf, with pencil inscriptions, from a bookseller (?), on the back. For the rest, a very clean copy, keeping all prints intact, lined with editorial bindings, in blue canvas, very fresh. Provenance: Roberto Gulbenkian Library.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708), a prestigious French botanist, born in Aix-en-Provence, was one of the first scientists to define the concept of genus (genus, genera), a term that classifies the group of higher level to the species and inferior to the family, in the modern biological scientific classification. In 1700, he was charged with organizing a scientific expedition to the Middle East, with the aim of studying and collecting new species. The account of the trip, which passed through the Cyclades Islands, Constantinople, Crete, Armenia, Persia, etc., but did not reach Egypt, as was predicted (due to the plague that was raging there), was published posthumously, in two editions in the same year 1717 (one in two volumes in-4th, in Paris, and this, in three volumes, in-8th, in Lyon) in the form of 22 extensive letters addressed to Louis Phélipeaux, count of Pontchartrain (1643-1727 ), Chancellor of France and Minister of the Navy. The collation of the three volumes is as follows: I - [22], 379 [1 br.] P .: 51 engravings; II - [4], 448 p .: 40 engravings; III - [4], 404, [64] p .: 62 engravings. Álvaro Semedo, Jesuit and scientist, spent more than 20 years in China, having carried out an in-depth study of local history and ethnography. Always showing the greatest admiration for Chinese institutions, he gives us a clear and concise account of the Chinese religious system, a description of the kingdom, an explanation of its language and alphabet and a set of ethnological and evangelical news. The work, whose original was lost, achieved great popularity when it was translated into several languages during the 17th and 18th centuries. Initially written in Portuguese, it was however published for the first time in Castilian by Manuel de Faria e Sousa (Madrid, 1642). Interestingly, the first Portuguese edition would only be published in 1731. Copy of the second French edition (the first date of 1645), with two extensive restorations on the first two leaves: in the half-title (only marginal) and on the title page, where it tangentially affects two letters of the word ROY, in the imprint, as well as one ownership manuscript, from the time. The copy, clean and slightly trimmed, was enriched with three large folding prints and five small prints that do not belong to the edition.
