Inocêncio (VI, p. 114) considers it an esteemed monument of typographic art, in addition to the importance of the news it contains. Some sections with browning, as is usual in most copies. But, in general, a clean, complete specimen with good margins. A robust and slightly worn entire sheepskin binding of the time (but recoverable), with imperfections on the spine and support fault in the back cover; lack of a flyleaf. Salvá, 3603. The Count of Volney (1757-1820), intellectual, philosopher, archaeologist, traveler and French Orientalist, was certainly one of the most popular authors of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th, not only in France but throughout Europe and the United States; all of his work, but in particular The Ruins of Palmira (1789), a true “best seller”, contributed decisively to the spread of the taste for Greco-Latin antiques scattered throughout the Mediterranean basin. Fourth edition of his second book (the first date 1787), in two volumes, illustrated with five copperplate prints and three fold-out maps, with the following collation: I - [4], X, 487, [1] p .: 2 unfolded prints, 2 unfolded maps .; II - [4], 492 p .: 3 unfolded prints, 1 unfolded map. Copy slightly trimmed, but clean, with all the engravings neatly folded, lined with contemporary binders, whole sheepskin, slightly handled, with mottled patine. KLAPROTH, Heinrich Julius von.- Mémoires relatifs a l’Asie, contenant des recherches historiques, géographiques et philologiques sur les peuples de l’Orient.- Paris: Dondey-Dupré, 1824- 1828.- 3 vols.: il.; 20 cm.- E. Heinrich Julius von Klaproth (1783-1835), Orientalist historian, linguist, traveler and German explorer, born in Berlin, who, together with Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat, was one of those responsible for the institution of Asian studies in Western universities; in 1805, at the invitation of Count Potocki, Klaproth joined a Russian embassy sent to China, having subsequently taught at the St. Petersburg Academy, until he finally settled in Paris in 1815. Original edition of one of his most sought after works. The collation of each of the three volumes is as follows: I - [8], 478, [1, 1 br.] P .: III prints (2 unfolded), 1 unfolded map .; II - [8], 432, [3, 1 br.] P .: 1 prints, 2 tables, 2 unfolded maps .; III - [8], 520 p .: 2 unfolded maps, 5 prints. Apparently, volume II lacks a fold-out map next to p. 157 (the first print has the indication pl. II); in the same volume II, p. 320, a foldable map of the Jean Potocki Archipelago is identical (repeated) to that found in volume I, next to the same p. 320. Slightly trimmed copy (carmine edge), but clean, covered with contemporary bindings, whole flecked calf, with the initials MD (?) crowned on the upper section of the spines. The author (1783-1835), after integrating the Russian mission to Beijing, traveled through Mongolia and in 1807 was charged with organizing an expedition to the Caucasus and Georgia. Contenant plusieurs remarques curieuses de physique, de geographie, d’hydrographie & d’histoire. Avec une description de la grande Tartarie, et des différens peuples qui l’habitent.- A Paris: Chez Claude Barbin, Jean Boudot [et] Geroge & Louis Josse, 1692.- [20], 406, [26] p.: il.; 24 cm.- E. Original edition published without the author's name, the French Jesuit Philippe Avril (1654-1698), mathematician, missionary and diplomat. Avril was sent by Louis XIV to the emperor of China, having left Marseille in 1685 and traveled through Syria and Turkey, before arriving in Moscow in January 1687. In this city he was prevented from continuing his journey, having chosen to head to Warsaw, where he requested the intervention of King Jan III Sobieski. Having failed to reach China, Avril returned to France, where he published the present account of his travels. The work is dedicated to Prince Stanislaw Jan Jabolonowski, Grand General des Armes de Pologne, and includes his portrait, opened in copper plate, followed by the dedication with a heraldic vignette with the coat of arms of the dedicator. The text is illustrated with a fold-out map (Nouvelle carte and la Sibérie et du Kitay), three engravings and copperplate prints and five large vignettes, one at the beginning of each of the five books that make up the work: Voyage d'Orient; Tartarie Voyage; Voyage de la Chine; Moscovie Voyage; Moldavie Voyage. Copy slightly trimmed, but clean, with only a handwritten (unreadable) inscription on the title page. Contemporary binding, entirely sheepskin, very worn and dehydrated, lacking the two marbled paper flyleaves. At the end, before the index, it includes a sheet with the Privilège du Roy that we did not find described in the known copies. Provenance: Roberto Gulbenkian Library. Cordier, BS 2088.

James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856), Scottish artist, watercolourist, diplomat and traveler, famous for the narratives of his travels in Asia Minor and India. Original edition of his mission to Persia in the winter of 1833-34, which involved a journey of more than 4000 km to Tehran (outward journey), illustrated with two steel-engravings, one at the beginning of each volume. Slightly loose binding copy, but clean, preserving the publisher's original binding, in gold-engraved canvas, a little worn, with some damage to the turn ins. Provenance: Roberto Gulbenkian Library.

Bertrand...- A Neuchatel: dans l'Imprimerie de la Societé Typographique, M.DCC.LXXI -M.DCC.LXXXI (1771-1781).- 19 vols.: il.; 24 cm.- E., Complete and clean set of the smaller format edition of the monumental Descriptions des arts et métiers, initially published in fascicles, in folio format, from the beginning of the 18th century in Paris. This edition was published in Neuchatel between 1771 and 1781, at the initiative of the Swiss pastor, geologist and naturalist Élie Bertrand (1713-1797) and had the collaboration of the best experts in each of the thematic domains, namely, Beauvais-Raseau, Courtivon , Demachy, Dudin, Duhamel Du Monceau, Fiquet, Fougeroux d'Angerville, Fougeroux de Bondaroy, Galon, Garsault, La Lande, Le Vieil, Malouin, Milly, Morand, Paulet, Réaumur, Saint Aubin, Struve, etc. The copper plate opened engraving and etching prints, will have been reduced from the originals (of larger format), by the pantograph process. The set, slightly trimmed but clean, includes 510 engravings, with independent numbering, bound at the end of each volume, related to the various chapters of the text. Plate V of volume X trimmed at the lower margin, with damage to the image; Volume XIV with water stains (tidal) affecting mainly the first 16 prints and eight badly folded plates, with marginal imperfections. All volumes have, labeled on the back cover, a typographic label with the initials P.M.B. Contemporary leather half-bindings, slightly worn and dehydrated; some damaged turn ins (at the top and bottom); all volumes retain the original marbled endpapers; blue anilized edge. A detailed list with the bibliographic description of each of the volumes is available to interested parties.

Specimen missing page 327/328; page 358/359 without outside upper corner (where a chapter one should be); last 30 leaves handled and patched; two loose leaves at the end. Entire natural robust sheepskin contemporary binding, with blind decoration on the covers (Renaissance rolls) and spine, keeping intact the eight metal corners, the two central bosses and the two pairs of clasps with metal mounts on leather.

D. Frei Amador Arrais (ca. 1530-1600), religious of the Order of Carmelites, born in Beja, a figure of great intellectual scope from the 16th century, a speaker of the highest eloquence, author of the famous Dialogues, published in Coimbra, in 1589, significant milestone in Portuguese Counter-Reformation literature. Frei Amador was a royal preacher, assistant to Cardinal D. Henrique, bishop of Tripoli and Portalegre. Original bull (manuscript on parchment) of Pope Gregory XIII, with the confirmation of the election of D. Frei Amador Arrais to Bishop of Portalegre (leaving the diocese of Tripoli, of which he was titular bishop), a place he occupied between 1581 and 1596, year of his resignation. Document dated from Rome, with Saint Peter, on the third day before the November 1581 kalendas (that is, on the 30th of November 1581), with three signatures (probably from the prefect and / or secretaries of the Congregation of Bishops, or equivalent). On the back, it presents the following summary: Bulla da Promoção de D. Amador Bispo de Trípoli p(ara) Bispo de Portalegre pello Papa Gregorio em o ano de 1581 em o ano decimo do seu Pontificado, remetida a Fellipe 2º em posse deste R[ei]nº. One-hand manuscript, entirely calligraphic in Gothic, with two large vegetal initials (G and A) and four smaller ones, in the first line, which also has 13 large ascending extensions. Slightly delimited document, planned, framed (between two glasses), with the pending seal (s) missing, preserving traces of the silk ties; minor faults in the folds and some stains, without prejudice to the reading.

Set consisting of 95 titles (leaflets and volumes), printed in Paris in 1814, referring to the political and military events that took place in the French capital during that year. It is recalled that, among other events, Paris was the scene, at the end of March, of the Battle of Paris, which culminated in the occupation of the capital by the coalition forces, composed of Russian, Austrian and Prussian troops. Following this defeat, Napoleon was compelled to sign the Treaty of Fontainebleau and then to his first exile, on the Isle of Elba. There followed troubled months of political and constitutional discussions, some of which degenerated into heated controversies, well represented in the group. Some titles more suggestive of the content of the miscellaneous: 2 - La campagne de Portugal en 1810 et 1811; 15 - De Buonaparte, des Bourbons, et de la nécessité de se rallier a nos princes légitimes... / par A. de Chateaubriand; 25 - Réflexions sur les constitutions, la distribuition des pouvoirs, et les garanties, dans une monarchie constitutionelle / par Benjamin Constant; 43 - L'opinion publique, ou réflexions sur les journaux, le Sénat, et la liberté de presse, et les puisances alliées; 49 - La révolution, l'usurpateur, et le retour des Bourbons...; 61 - L'ataque de Paris par les Troupes Alliées, le 18 Mars 1814; 69 - Remontrances des négociants du Brésil contre les insultes faites au pavillon partugais... / par. On the spines (4 to 11, 13 to 16 and 18), sometimes with some foxing. In each volume, the first leaflet features the monogrammatic seal of the House of Palmella on the face. Set of work, but complete, of the collection of engravings that reproduce the paintings of Rubens, usually called "the cycle of Maria de Médicis " commissioned to the Palace of Luxembourg, currently exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Edition entirely intaglio engraved (chisel and etching) by several engravers, of which we highlight Edelinck, Picart, Vermeulen, Audran, Duchange, etc. The set, in loose leaves, presents several imperfections, namely accentuated acidity, occasional water stains (tide), some restoration and excessive cutting, but outside the crease of the matrix; Coronation Engraving (16) very damaged near the fold, with slight loss of support; Engravings identified with numbers 7 and 27 (narrower) with trimmed margins; manually added ink to the exterior of the matrix. It is yet complete and is likely to be recovered.
