A journey through Persia, Georgia, Russia, Poland, and Prussia (London, 1818) JOHNSON, Lieut. Col. John.- A journey from India to England, through Persia, Georgia, Russia, Poland, and Prussia, in the year 1817.- London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1818.- X, [2], 376 p.: il.; 26 cm.- E. Original edition of a work that reports the return, by land, to the United Kingdom, of the author, engineering colonel at the East India Company, after a 35-year stay in India. Johnson, who between 1819 and 1835 lived in the house that would later become the home of Charles Darwin, describes his trip between Mumbai and London, noting the observations he was making, including all the expenses he was obliged to during the trip. The edition is illustrated with 12 aquatints, five of which are hand-coloured, plus a plant from the hot baths of the Shah of Persia, Abbas I the Great (1571-1629). The prints were opened by the engraver and watercolourist Theodore Henry Adolphus Fielding (1781-1851). Copy slightly trimmed and with slight browning, keeping all engravings well placed according to the respective index. Contemporary calf half-binding, with traces of handling and slightly crumpled corners, keeping the original marbled paper endpapers just like the edges of the leaves. Provenance: Roberto Gulbenkian Library. Abbey (Travel), 518. Tooley, 284.
