Fr. Rafael Bluteau (1638-1734), regular cleric of the Order of S. Caetano (Teatino), was born in London, to French parents; in 1668 he arrived in Portugal where he obtained the protection of Queen D. Maria Francisca of Savoy; after a brief absence in France, he returned to Portugal where he was again cherished by the court, with King D. João V having all his works printed. Vocabulary is the first dictionary in the Portuguese language, with over 40,000 entries, and one of the most important monuments of Portuguese lexicography. Complete set, including the two supplements published in 1727 and 1728. The eighth volume includes, as usual, bound at the end, a Diccionario de castellano y portuguez para facilitar a los curiosos la noticia de la lengua latina, con el uso del Vocabulario Portuguez y latino (Lisboa Occidental: En la Imprenta de Pascoal da Silva, 1721. [4], 189 p.). Copy with good margins, very clean, with flecked edges of the leaves. Good contemporary whole sheepskin bindings, with gold closed panels on the spines (three volumes with minor faults), with occasional abrasion in the covers, keeping the original marbled paper endpapers.
