Primeira edição da Década quarta, de João de Barros. No primeiro fólio tipografado apresenta a seguinte
indicação: Qvarta decada da Asia de Ioão de Barros [...] reformada accrescentada e illvstrada com notas e
taboas geographicas por Ioão Baptista Lavanha. Recorde-se que as três primeiras décadas foram publicadas
em Lisboa, respectivamente em 1552, 1553 e 1563. Entretanto, saiu a quarta década já da autoria de Diogo
do Couto. E só em 1615 é publicada a quarta década que Barros tinha deixado incompleta e foi concluída
por João Batista Lavanha. Exemplar incompleto, com falta das seis folhas inumeradas finais, com o índice,
e dos três mapas gravados em separado, que acompanham a edição: Ilha de Ia[p]oa, Reino de Guzarate e
Reino de Bengalla. De resto, um exemplar limpo e com boas margens, conservando intacto (apenas com
ligeira acidez) o frontispício alegórico, gravado a talhe-doce. Encadernação da época, inteira de
pergaminho flexível, conservando parte dos atilhos originais. Palau, 24920.

First edition of the Fourth Report by João de Barros. In the first printed sheet the following indication is given: Qvarta decada da Asia de
Ioão de Barros [...] reformada accrescentada e illvstrada com notas e taboas geographicas por Ioão Baptista Lavanha. It is recalled that the
first three reports were published in Lisbon, respectively in 1552, 1553 and 1563. However, the fourth report was already written by Diogo do
Couto. And only in 1615 is published the fourth report that Barros had left incomplete and was completed by João Batista Lavanha.
Incomplete copy, missing the six final numbered sheets with the index, and the three separately engraved maps accompanying the edition:
Ilha de Ia[p]oa, Reino de Guzarate e Reino de Bengalla. In addition, a clean and well-kept copy, keeping intact (with only slight acidity) the
intaglio engraved allegorical frontispiece. Entire flexible parchment binding of the time, keeping part of the original ties. Palau, 24920.

Frei Marcos de Lisboa, (1511-1591), cronista da ordem franciscana, acompanhou D. Sebastião em
1574, na sua primeira jornada de África; mais tarde (1581) veio a ser bispo do Porto. As suas
Crónicas da Ordem dos Frades Menores, obtiveram grande sucesso editorial, pois apenas para o
século XVI temos notícia de quatro edições em Portugal, sete em Espanha e cerca de 17 em Itália
(das suas diversas partes). Exemplar de trabalho da terceira edição da primeira parte desta crónica
(as duas primeiras foram publicadas igualmente em Lisboa, respectivamente em 1557 e 1566).
Exemplar aparado e com acidez, apresentando ainda as seguintes imperfeições: folha de rosto
espelhada e reconstituída, com grave restauro, com perda de grande parte do suporte; folhas
preliminares com restauros marginais, sem rejuízo do texto; últimas 10 folhas com restauros nos
cantos exteriores, afectando ocasionalmente a paginação e algumas letras; última folha espelhada e
remarginada. Encontra-se, contudo, completo e sólido. Encadernação recente, inteira de carneira
mosqueada, com casas fechadas a ouro na lombada e o corte das folhas carminado. Anselmo, 975.

Friar Marcos of Lisbon, (1511-1591), chronicler of the Franciscan order, accompanied King D. Sebastião in 1574, on his first journey to Africa;
Later (1581) he became bishop of Oporto. His Chronicles of the Order of the Friars Minor, had a great editorial success, for only in the
sixteenth century did we hear of four editions in Portugal, seven in Spain and 17 in Italy (of its diferente parts). Copy of the third edition
of the first part of this chronicle (the first two were also published in Lisbon, respectively in 1557 and 1566). Trimed copy with acidity,
also presenting the following imperfections: mirrored and rebuilt cover sheet, with severe restoration, with loss of much of the support;
Preliminary leaves with marginal restoration, without damaging the text; The last 10 leaves with restoration on the outer corners,
occasionally affecting pagination and some letters; Last sheet mirrored and rematted. It is, however, complete and solid. Recent entire
mottled calf binding, with gold closed houses on the spine and carmine leaf cutting. Anselmo, 975. BN, 479. King D. Manuel II’s library
does not mention this edition but only the first two.
