Edição lionesa dos dois primeiros livros da Arte de mar, de Ovídio (43 a.C. - 17 ou 18 d.C.), poeta romano,
contemporâneo de Virgílio e Horácio, com quem partilha a glória de ser um dos autores clássicos da
língua latina. Ovídio escreveu ainda um terceiro volume, dedicado às mulheres. Edição ilustrada seis
gravurinhas xilográficas, inteiramente composta em caracteres góticos, com a disposição clássica dos
documentos da época: texto original ao centro da página, envolvolto por extensos comentários (glosas),
no caso presente, do humanista toscano Ângelo Poliziano (1454-1494). Rosto levemente cansado,
composto a preto e vermelho, apresentando o carimbo da Quinta das Lágrimas - Coimbra, que se repete
na folha XVII. Exemplar com falta do fólio final (fólio lIV e último do índice), muito aparado, com
prejuízo total ou parcial de boa parte dos títulos correntes e foliação. Alguns sublinhados e anotações
da época e ocasionais manchas de tinta. Encadernação do século XVIII, inteira de carneira.

Lyonese edition of the first two books of the Art of Love, from Ovid (43 BC-17 or 18 A.D.), Roman poet, contemporary of Virgil and Horace,
with whom he shares the glory of being one of the classical authors of the Latin language. Ovid has written a third volume, devoted to
women. Illustrated edition with woodcut engravings, entirely composed of Gothic characters, with the classical layout of the documents of
the time: original text to the centre of the page, surrounded by extensive comments (glosses), in the present case, from the Tuscan humanist
Angelo Poliziano (1454-1494). Slightly fatigued title page, printed in black and red, presenting the Quinta das Lágrimas stamp-Coimbra, which
is repeated on leaf xvii. Copy with lack of the final folio (Folio lIV and the last one of the index), very trimmed, with total or partial losses of
good part of the current titles and foliage. Some underscores and annotations of the time and random ink stains.

Segunda edição (a primeira data de 1589) de uma obra que pode ser considerada
como um marco significativo na literatura portuguesa da Contra-Reforma
e um documento que traduz a mentalidade da época à qual não é alheia algum
anti-semitismo e uma tendência para citar autores clássicos, como influência da
corrente humanística. O autor, natural de Beja (ca.1530-1600), doutor em Teologia
pela Universidade de Coimbra, foi bispo de Portalegre. Exemplar aparado e com
alguma acidez; alguns cortes de traça na margem inferior das três folhas
preliminares (no segundo caderno) e quatro primeiras folhas de texto.
Folha A1 com restauro sem afectar o texto; algumas manchas nas primeiras folhas,

Second edition (the first date of 1589) of a work that can be considered
as a significant milestone in the Portuguese literature of the Counter-Reformation
and a document that reflects the mentality of the time to which there is no
anti-semitism and a tendency to quote Classical authors, as an influence of the
humanistic. The author, born in Beja (ca.1530-1600), holds a Phd in theology from
the University of Coimbra, and was bishop of Portalegre. A trimmed copy with
some acidity; Some moth cuts on the lower margin of the three primary sheets
(in the second notebook) and four first sheets of text. Sheet A1 with restoration
without affecting the text; Some stains on the first leaves, including the title page.
