ROSÁRIO, Frei Diogo do, O.P. & Re | uerendiss. The Dominican Fr. Diogo do Rosário, born in Évora, was prior in the convent of Guimarães, the city where he died in 1580. Fr. Diogo Diogo had a close relationship with D. Fr. Bartolomeu dos Mártires who commissioned him to publish a new legendarium (Braga, 1567) which was reprinted several times, as well as the translation of the “Summa Caietana”, by the Dominican exegete, theologian and Italian cardinal Tommaso de Vio (1469-1534). In fact, at least six Portuguese editions of the Rosarian translation of the “Summa” are known (Lisbon, 1557, 1560; Coimbra, 1566 and 1573; Braga, 1565 and 1566), the present one being probably one of the rarest, since there is no copy in the National Library or in the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II. Copy slightly cropped, with some restorations on the title page, slightly affecting the text on front and verso; Minor restorations on subsequent leaves. Binding from the 20th century (probably from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça), with blind tooling on the covers and spine. Anselm, 863.

Fr. Marcos de Lisboa OFM, (1511-1591) was a chronicler of the order and accompanied King D. Sebastião in 1574, on his first journey in Africa; later (1581) he became bishop of Porto. His «Crónicas da Ordem dos Frades Menores», achieved great editorial success, as for the 16th century alone we have news of four editions in Portugal, seven in Spain and about 17 in Italy (of its various parts). Complete set, consisting of two volumes of different editions. The first was printed by António Ribeiro in 1587 (the only volume published by this printer); the second, almost entirely composed in gothic characters, was printed by the German João Blávio de Colónia, in 1562, and the same printer also published the first volume (first part), in 1557, which is not included in this set. Slightly trimmed volumes, with slight browning and occasional minor stains; Title pages with Livraria de Alcobaça stamps covered with paper patches; both title pages, slightly used, with reconstructed margins and two antique ownerships. Bindings from the 18th century(?), full sheepskin, identical, slightly worn, with traces of wormholes. Initials F.I.M. engraved in gold at the foot of the spine of the first volume (and possibly the second, with a small flaw in the same place). Anselmo, 975 and 319. Biblioteca Nacional (16th century), 479 and 476. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II, 281 (for the 2nd and 3rd parts, not referring to the edition by António Ribeiro).

Third Spanish edition of “Peregrinação”, published before the second Portuguese edition, printed in Lisbon, in 1678 (the first two Spanish editions were published in Madrid, in 1620 and 1627). Fernão Mendes (1510/14-1583) left for India in 1537, having stayed in the East for around 21 years. The “Pilgrimage”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was originally published on the initiative of Fr. Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death (Lisbon, 1614), from the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. The first three preliminary pages correspond to the title page, licenses and dedication. In the fourth begins the «Apologia en favor de Fernan Mendes Pinto, y desta Historia Oriental», authored by the translator, Francisco de Herrera, and extending over 16 pages. Then the «Catalogo de los avtores qve han escrito de las Indias Orientales, Iapon, y China, y de sus situaciones, nauegacion, y conquistas». The work begins in the following. In the end, there is the «Tabla de los capitulos...» and, on the last page (with a blank verso), the colophon. Slightly handled copy, with slight browning and occasional stains; outer margin of the first and last two leaves with some restorations, without affecting the text; some inscriptions of ownership, faded, on the title page. Contemporary binding, full flexible parchment, a little worn, with new endpapers and bindings. Inocencio, II, p. 289. Samodaes, 2074. Palau, 163204. Leite de Faria, 27-4.

Henry L'Évêque (1769-1832), born in Geneva, a painter, miniaturist, watercolourist and above all an engraver, was part of a group of artists who, following the French Revolution, wandered around Europe accompanying armies in campaign, recording for the posterity the most famous battles of the Napoleonic wars. VIVIAN, George.- Scenery of Portugal & Spain / on stone by L. Haghe.- London: P. & D. Colnaghi,; Ackermann, 1839.- [35] litografias em [31] folhas; 54 cm.- E.
George Vivian (1798-1873), English architect, draftsman, painter and art critic, traveled throughout Europe for 30 years, staying especially in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Scandinavia and Russia. The edition, entirely lithographed and considered one of the most beautiful books ever published on the Iberian countries, was originally published in fascicles, so the number of plates may vary from copy to copy. The present is complete, matching exactly the respective index, also lithographed, that is, it consists of 35 lithographs gauffered on 31 sheets, three of which are preliminary sheets (title page and list of drawings), 27 sheets with 30 lithographs (the plates 19/20, 29/30 and 33/34 are double) and a final plate (tail piece). It should be noted that, of the 35 lithographs, 27 represent locations in Portugal. At the end, two sheets (3 p.) with the publisher's publicity, which do not belong to the edition. Clean copy, preserving all plates very fresh (no separators), covered in good recent binding, entirely in green morocco (probably from the workshops of the Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Foundation), with gold ornamental borders on the covers, smooth spine profusely gold decorated, double “filet de coupe”, rolls on the squares and gilt edges; protective case. PEDRO, D. (Conde de Barcelos).- NOBILIARIO | DE D. PEDRO | CONDE DE BARCELOS | HIJO DEL REY D. DIONIS | DE PORTVGAL. | ORDENADO Y ILVSTRADO | COM NOTAS Y INDICES | POR IVAN BAVTISTA LAVAÑA | CORONISTA MAYOR DEL REINO | DE PORTVGAL.- En Roma: Por Estevan Paolinio, 1640.- [14], 402, [36] p.: 1 gravura; 40 cm.- E.
D. Pedro, Count of Barcelos (1287-1354), the natural son of King D. Dinis I, a prominent figure in the peninsular medieval culture. We owe him the compilation of songs by Galician-Portuguese troubadours, the «Crónica Geral de Espanha», from 1344 and the «Livro de linhagens», whose Livro Quatro or Nobiliário can be found here in its rare original edition (the second one was published in Madrid in 1646). The four parts of the «Livro de linhagens» (only fragments of the second and third books have survived) were only published in the 19th century, by Alexandre Herculano, in the collection «Portugaliae Monumenta Historica, série Scriptores». The structure of the copy is developed as follows: 1 - Half-Title(1 f.); 2 - Copperplate print allegorical title (missing, reproduced in photogravure); 3 - Title page (f. [+1]); 4 - Text «Al lector», signed by the printer Estevan Paolinio (f. +2);5 - Dedication to Manuel de Moura Corte-Real, 2nd marquis of Castel Rodrigo, signed by Juan Baptista Lavanha (f. +3 to +4 [blank verse]); 6 - Prologue by Count D. Pedro (f. +5); 7 - Index of Titles I, II and III (f. +6); 8 - Text, beginning with paragraph 16 of Title III (p. 1 to 402); 9 - Small note on the continuation of the Nobiliary (f. ll4 [blank verse]); 10 - Index of surnames [and titles] of this nobiliary (f. +1 to +4v); 11 - Index of the names of the men of this nobiliary (f. a1 to c1). Therefore, the copy does not include the «Notas del Marqves de Montebelo al Nobiliario del Conde D. Pedro» (p. 1 to 46) or the «Tablas» (4 f.) that are missing in most of the known copies. Slightly trimmed copy, with some wormholes: on the inner margin, next to the backbone, of f. 49/50 to f. 169/170, and of f. 327 /328 to the end, sometimes affecting the printed text. Title page with foreign ecclesiastical heraldic stamp and white Salema Garção seal. Recent binding, full natural sheepskin. Samodaes, 2366. Palau, 133210
