Fr. Jerónimo de Azambuja (†1563), also known as Oleastro, religious of the Order of Saint Dominic, of which he was provincial, was one of the most prominent theologians of the 16th century. Deep knowledge of the Latin and Greek languages, he participated in the Council of Trent where he was noted for his opposition to any type of innovation; as chief inquisitor (1555) he practiced the greatest violence and cruelty. Original edition of his main work, the “Comentários ao Pentateuco”, divided into five parts or books, the first printed by João Barreira and the rest by João Blávio de Colónia. The commentary on the second book of the Pentateuch was the first to be printed by João Blávio de Colónia (fl. 1554-1563), the last German printer to settle in Lisbon. Copy slightly trimmed (occasional damage to the printed marginalia), with slight moisture stains (from the tide), but overall clean. Full sheepskin binding, from the 20th century, certainly from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind decoration on the covers, in the style of the period (spine with slight wear). Copy of what is considered the best edition of this work, which was also published under the title of "Epítome de las Historias Portuguesas", by the humanist, poet and historian Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649), born in Felgueiras. Illustrated edition with an engraved allegorical frontispiece, representing the dominion of Lusitania over the World, an engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal (before the beginning of the text) and 25 portraits of the Kings of Portugal, up to D. João V. with large margins, containing only 24 portraits (missing the portrait of Count D. Henrique). Small modern ex-libris, with a monogram (JLF?) and two cutouts from booksellers, pasted on the back cover. Contemporary binding, recovered, very worn. Inocêncio, XVI, p. 186. Samodães (1664) refers to an Antwerp edition of the same date.

The author (1866-1930), professor, agronomist and veterinarian, was born in Margão (Salcete, Goa); he was a member of parliament, director of Companhia das Lezírias and member of the Academy of Sciences. A monumental work, commissioned and published by the Great Commission of Lisbon, presided over by Ressano Garcia, organizer of the Portuguese representation at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Particularly appreciated are the 10 chromolithographs representing bunches of grapes from different national varieties, signed by Roque Gameiro. Clean and unopened copy, with only occasional light browning, keeping all the platers intact, with the respective cellophane separators. Recent green morocco half-binding, with large allusive tools (bunches of grapes) between the sections, preserving the booklets covers, with flaps.

Authentic copy of the Manueline charter of Terra de S. Martinho and Burral de Lima (today Beiral do Lima), originally granted on May 1, 1515. The two settlements, located on the left bank of the river Lima, are today part, respectively, of the municipalities of Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima. On the front of the first folio, the first three lines bear the following title: «Treslado do foral da Villa de ponte de Lima e seu termo E primeiramente se segue a tauoada delle Tauoada da terra de são martinho e Regemguos dela». This title was added by the notary responsible for the copy and does not appear in the original manuscript of the charter, which is today in the Municipal Archive of Ponte de Lima. At the end of the transfer (fol. 27v), it includes a registration certificate with an autograph signature by the notary Francisco Rebelo de Sá and the signature of a second notary who verified the fidelity of the copy with the original. Paper section, sewn to the thread, with 34 sheets (eight blank); some moisture (tidal) stains and deep wormholes confined to outer margin. Transcription (of the charter) apparently in one hand, in linked cursive Gothic handwriting, fully legible. Certificate dated June 30, 1624.

Chamberlain (1836-1914), one of the most influential British politicians of the 19th century, was the father of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (1937-1940). First edition of the 17th century, published in Portugal, almost entirely in italic characters; there is news of another edition from 1607, but no copy is known, so its existence has not been proven. There is also a variant, with the same date, with the stanzas numbered in the press. The title page includes a xylography representing the coat of arms of the dedicatee, D. Rodrigo da Cunha (1577-1643), deputy of the Holy Office, who became archbishop of Braga and Lisbon. Copy slightly handled and with some wormholes, mostly marginal (restored on pages 1 to 19); small central wormhole (affecting some letters) on leaves 67 to 73; Irregular outer margin on first 20 leaves. According to the description in codex 8871 of the National Library Reserves: «Trata-se de uma novela de cavalaria composta por quatro partes, cujo enredo se centra na corte do imperador Beliandro, imperador da Grécia, de seu filho Bellifloro e de D. Belindo, príncipe lendário de Portugal, enamorado de Leridónia, princesa de França. A obra, escrita em português, no princípio do século XVII, tem sido atribuída pela tradição bibliográfica a D. Leonor Coutinho (ca. 1575-1648), condessa da Vidigueira, e a D. Francisco de Portugal , 3º conde de Vimioso (1550-1582). No entanto, Álvarez-Cifuentes afasta a hipótese de a autoria poder ser atribuída a este último autor, aceitando a hipótese de uma responsabilidade feminina, ou múltipla. Nanci Romero e Vargas Díaz-Toledo consideram que as duas primeiras partes da crónica serão, possivelmente, da autoria de D. Leonor Coutinho, enquanto as duas últimas partes, mais tardias, terão uma autoria, ou autorias, diferentes». The second part (in a different hand than the first) bears the following title, handwritten in red, in gothic script: «Segunda parte de Chronica de Belisandro, Emperador da Grecia Written by Cornellio Faquião Author Ingles». Inscribed in the initial S of the word Segunda, the caption: F Ripo. of S. Hieronimo. The first part consists of 56 chapters and the second of 63. Original edition published one year before the American edition, of the first history of the American Revolution, written by an American. William Gordon (1728-1807), was born in the United Kingdom, in Hitchin (Hertfordshire); he soon developed sympathies for the independence ideas of the North American colonies, reason why in 1770 he decided to settle definitively in America. He made valuable contributions to its History, namely George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. In the words of Joseph Sabin, Gordon is rightly recognized as one of the most impartial and authoritative of the numerous historians of the American Revolution (vol. VII, p. 346/347). The collation of the four volumes is as follows: Vol. I: [24], 504 p.: 1 unfolded map; vol. II: [8], 584 p.: 4 unfolded maps; vol. III: [8], 499, [1 br.] p.: 2 unfolded maps; vol. IV: [8], 445, [1 br.] p.: 2 unfolded maps. Very clean copy with good margins, preserving all nine maps well folded and fresh, namely: I - The United States of America.; II - Boston, with its environs.; III - New York Island, & parts adjacent; IV - The Jerseys, &c. &w.; V - New Hampshire, Vermont, &c.; VI - The Carolina’s, with part of Georgia.; VII - Charlestown & Fort Moultrie.; VIII - The part of Virginia which was the seat of action. Large volume bringing together 42 engravings mounted on 40 sheets, by Francesco Bartolozzi, either as the original artist or just as an engraver, all published in London between 1776 and 1802 (some without date). Bartolozzi (1725-1815) was born in Florence, but it was in London that he became famous, having developed the stipple technique to the highest level. In 1802, at the invitation of D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, he settled in Lisbon where he directed an engraving class and died at the age of 86. The volume has a title page at the beginning (A collection of engravings by Francesco Bartolozzi) and a frontispiece in the middle (Imitations of original designs by Leonardo da Vinci..., published by John Chamberlain, London, 1796). However, most of the plates do not correspond to what is indicated on the frontispieces (only five plates reproduce Leonardo's drawings). Some loose plates, others a little trimmed and with foxing or slightly dusty. Most of the montage sheets have captions and pencil annotations in Portuguese. Ex-libris of Johannes Patricius Chrichton Stuart Marchio Bothæ (John Patrick Chrichton Stuart, Marquess of Bute, 1847-1900). Half-bound in citron morocco, with the letter F at the bottom of the spine; gilt edges.

William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1592-1676), politician and soldier, born in Yorkshire (United Kingdom), became famous as a riding master and author of treatises on equestrian art. This is the second edition, with better graphic quality, as it was printed on superior quality paper. It preserves the double frontispiece of the first edition (in the variant dated 1658), with the following imprint: A Anvers Chez Iacques van Meurs l’an M. DC. LVIII. Engraving 16 with restored central tear, without lack of support; stain on outer margin of last seven leaves. For the rest, a lightly handled copy, but in general, clean, preserving all the engravings mounted on guards. It includes, pasted in the free endpaper, a holy card with an inscription offering, in French (10 lines), to an unidentified general, signed (illegible) and undated (circa 1800). Full sheepskin binding, a little later (19th century?), with a gilt roll on the squares and a slightly worn spine. Complete copy, strictly corresponding to the detailed description by Mennessier de La Lance (II, p. 248).

Important work of synthesis, illustrated with a total of 95 hand-colored engravings, printed separately, mainly representing decorations of honorary orders of chivalry. The chapter referring to Portugal (pages 117 to 127 of volume II) includes four engravings, representing 16 decorations. We believe that this is one of the rare examples that Palau indicates to have more engravings than those listed in the respective indexes. In fact, the copy includes the following eight engravings of knights, not mentioned in the indexes: Order of Leopold of Austria (I, p. 18); Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Spain (I, p. 92); Order of Charles III of Spain; Order of the Golden Fleece, from Spain (I, p. 380); Order of the Holy Spirit, from France (II, p. 20); Order of Leopold I, of France (II, p. 26); Order of the Annunciation, of Savoy (II, p. 178); Order of St. Mauritius & St. Lazarus, of Savoy. Rare plates with small imperfections, with the ink adhering to the previous page, leaving some marks, more visible on plate 86. But, overall, a good copy, covered in period bindings, full sheepskin, with gilt ornamental borders on the covers and blind central medallion on all covers. Giovanni Giustino Ciampino (1633-1698), Italian cleric, art historian and archaeologist, born in Rome, graduated in Law from the University of Macerata; Ciampino embarked on historical and archaeological studies, having published two master works, profusely illustrated: the first on the art of mosaics (Vetera monumenta..., Rome, 1690) and the present one (De sacris ædificis...), a history of the Early churches built in Europe and Asia (Italy, Palestine and Constantinople) under the aegis of Emperor Constantine I the Great. Original edition, illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece and 35 icopperplates prints, printed separately, of which 28 are foldable. The prints represent architectural and artistic aspects of the different temples. Very clean copy, keeping all prints very fresh and well folded. Work illustrated with five copperplate prints, printed separately: N[uest]ra Sª del Buensucesso de Madrid; author's portrait; solemn procession; form and order of solemnity...; ...Plaza de S. Pedro de Roma (double). This last engraving bears the following inscription: G[regori]o a Fosman et Medina sculpsit M. 1672. Original edition of the monumental work of Barthélemy d’Herbelot (1625-1695), orientalist scholar and French polyglot, born in Paris, speaking and writing, among other languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Persian and Turkish. In 1692, d'Herbelot was appointed Professor of Syriac at the Collège de France. Edition published two years after the author’s death by another orientalist, Antoine Galland (1646-1715), considered the first major contribution and reference source for the modern “Encyclopédie de l’Islam”. Several oval stamps, slightly faded, from Livraria Vieira Pinto and Ex Libris Vieira Pinto, on the title page, dedication, beginning and end of the text, etc. Slightly trimmed copy, with occasional light browning and traces of wormholes. Work of the greatest erudition and scientific rigor, a true masterpiece of our material bibliography, it is essential for all scholars and those interested in Portuguese typography from the 16th century. In addition to meticulous bibliographic descriptions, D. Manuel leaves us valuable information on iconographic, typographical, authorship and content aspects. Issue no. 3 of the special edition of 1945, printed on Van Gelder paper and signed by King D. Manuel II in the first two volumes (the third is posthumous). Bilingual edition, with a high graphic standard, limited to 698 copies, printed in two columns in black and red. The third volume has an autograph inscription: To Antonio Tavares de Carvalho, from Margery Withers who has had the great pleasure at last of meeting him. 13th July, 1995. Miss Withers (1905-1999) was D. Manuel's personal secretary and responsible for the publication of the third volume of “Livros antigos portugueses”, in 1935. Original bindings, in blue cloth (buckram), without book jackets, with top edge gilt (spines slightly discoloured).

One-handed manuscript, in poorly maintained cursive, from the 17th century (1st half), containing a collection of close to 100 texts relating to Portuguese and foreign prophecies (the title indicated above was transcribed from the spine of the volume). The codex opens with an extensive “Taboada do que consta este livro” (9 p.), registering about a hundred entries, locating each one of them on the respective sheet (the text runs between sheets 1 and 286). Apparently, the texts are arranged approximately chronologically, the oldest being dated 1598 and the most recent 1643. From the long table of contents, we highlight the following themes with epigraphs: Juízo tirado sobre o nascimento do sancto Rey Dom Sebastião; Relação da vida de elrei Dom Sebastiam; Notáveis tribulações que padeceu [o] Rey David; Portento de Palermo; Como hade ser Emperador em Lisboa cabeça do Mundo; Profecias da Sebila heroica; Profecias de Sam Frei Gil natural de Portugal aparecidas na livraria do mosteiro de Santa Cruz em Coimbra; Profecias de hum hermitam castelhano que se achou no anno de 1602 na China; Treslado de um cartapacio escrito em letra gótica; Sepultura do nosso santo e primeiro Rei Dom Afonso Amriques; Milagre sosedido am a Vila de Rei no anno de 1634; Vizão do Pe. Francisco de Monzón (?-1575), Spanish religious, born in Madrid, Master of Arts and Doctor of Theology from the University of Alcalá, arrived in Portugal in 1535 at the invitation of King João III, having taught Theology at the University of Lisbon and, from 1537, in Coimbra. Alongside his teaching activities, Monzón was chaplain and preacher in the courts of D. João III and D. Sebastião I, having carried out an important educational and pastoral activity with the two sovereigns. Second edition of the first book of one of his most notable works, dedicated to D. Sir Charles Stuart (Lord Stuart de Rothesay, 1779-1845) was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of H. British M. in Lisbon, member of the government of the Kingdom of Portugal during the Peninsular War and bearer of the Constitutional Charter granted by D. Pedro IV; Sir Charles was also ambassador in Paris (twice) and in St. Petersburg. Set consisting of 21 letters addressed to Sir George Cranfield Berkeley (1753-1818), Admiral of the British and Portuguese Armies and Commander of the Fleet at “Lisbon Station”, which protected the Portuguese coast and the Tagus bar during the Peninsular War, between 1810 and 1812. The letters, dated between June 1811 and July 1812, address a wide range of subjects of a political-military nature (10 letters with attachments or copies of other letters).

Third edition of the «Itinerário», previously published in 1593 and 1596. From the biography of D. Fr. Pantaleão de Aveiro (16th century), a Franciscan from the province of Algarve, we only know that he traveled through Europe, mainly in Italy, and was three years in the Holy Land, passing through Trent during the third phase of the famous council. The “Itinerary” is the account of his troubled pilgrimage, led by Br. Bonifácio de Ragusa, Custos of the Holy Land, in which about 60 religious took part. The title page presents, in the center, the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, archbishop of Lisbon and on the back, the licenses; the next three sheets, framed by xylographies, include the royal charter, the dedication to D. Miguel and a message to devotees wishing to visit the Holy Land, followed by the «Tavoada dos capitvlos» (f. [5, 6 and 7 ], ending with an engraving of Death; the next page (f. [8]) presents, on the front, an engraving of St. Peter and on the verso, a crown of thorns. The text of the journey is developed in the following 336 leaves, after which appears the «Index, que amostra as cousas particulares, que contem este Itinerario...» on three unnumbered sheets, with an image of Saint Barbara on the verso of the third; the last sheet includes two engravings: on the front, an image of the Ascension of the Virgin into Heaven, on the verso, the coat of arms of Portugal. Slightly trimmed copy, with a loose bifoil (from the «Tavoada»); small central wormhole, affecting the text, on the seven preliminary pages following the title page. Marino Barlezio (1450-1513), Albanian religious, historian and humanist, born in Scutari, then part of the Republic of Venice; in 1508-1510 he published in Rome the biography of Giorgio Castriota Scanderberg, a major figure in Albania (15th century), whose Portuguese translation, by D. Francisco de Andrade, was printed in Lisbon, by Marco Borges, in 1567 (see Inocêncio, II, p. 332). The present Castilian translation does not show any indication of authorship, printer or publisher (name of the author according to the bibliography). Slightly trimmed copy with slight browning. Two restorations on the title page: a repaired central tear, without lack of support and restoration with reconstruction of the outer margin (180x50 mm), without affecting the text; unrestored wormhole on outer margin of next six leaves. Otherwise, a clean and solid copy. Recent binding, fully sheepskin, probably from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind tooling decoration on the covers and spine and engraving of the title and date on the reserve of the central cover. Manuscript on parchment. Enforceable letter of nobility and blood cleanness (or letter of coat of arms) granted on behalf of the Council of His Majesty King Don Carlos II, of Spain (1661-1700), to Don Bernardo de Valbuena, neighbor of the town of Paredes de Nava (Palencia), on the occasion of the lawsuit that opposed the applicant to the licensee Joseph Antonio de las Cuebas y Zuñiga “vuestro fiscal y a el Conçejo y state of the good men pecheros [tenants or tenants] of the dicha villa of Paredes de Naba ”. Luxurious document with miniature, entirely handwritten in round humanistic script, featuring the following decorative elements: large full-page miniature (the applicant, wife and child) at the feet of the Virgin and Child (fol. 1v); coat of arms granted to D. Bernardo (full-page miniature, fol. 2r); folios 2v and 3r, with large decorative stripes with putti, columns and hunting motifs; around 90 lines with miniatures in red, green and blue (4 doubles and 18 triples); six pages of ornamental borders with miniatures; about 150 initials with miniatures (4 to 8 lines per side); a miniature representing King Carlos II (128x80 mm); all remaining pages (without miniatures) framed by gilt ornamental borders. Council oil stamp(?) affixed to the lower margin of all pages; at the end, two registers. Very well preserved document, dated “En la Ciudad de Valladilid a catorze dias de el mes de Agosto de mil seiscientos n y setenta y nueve años”. Original crimson silk binding, slightly worn, retaining the large lead pendent seal with the braided silk cord, as well as all the fine silk dividers; gilt edges.

Rare edition of the prayer of obedience addressed to Pope Leo X by Diogo Pacheco, on behalf of the King of Portugal, in the context of the sumptuous embassy sent to Rome in 1514 by King Manuel I, which featured the famous elephant Hanno. Diogo Pacheco (fl. 16th century), an erudite jurist, was court magistrate, chancellor of the Casa do Cível and secretary to the bishop of Porto, D. Diogo de Sousa. Pacheco accompanied this prelate in 1505 on the embassy sent to Rome to greet the new pope Julius II, having already uttered the prayer of obedience to the pope. The 1514 embassy was headed by the navigator and naval commander Tristan da Cunha (ca.1460-ca.1540), with the poet and chronicler Garcia de Resende (1470-1536) as secretary. The prayers of obedience, in use since the middle of the fourteenth century, were speeches pronounced on behalf of Christian sovereigns, usually on the occasion of the accession to the throne of a new pope. Two variants of this prayer are known, this one being distinguished by having the coat of arms of Portugal in the title page. The prayer itself occupies 10 pages (fol. a2r to b4v), the remaining four filled with traditional eulogies and praises, by the humanists Marcantonio Casanova, Joachim Cipellus, Blosius, Pietro Curzio, Lancellotus Politus, B. Dardanus, Janus Vitalis and Camillo Portio. The edition, without date or place of printing, was certainly printed in Rome, on the occasion of the visit of the embassy, that is, in 1514. Ex-libris of leather, pasted on the back cover: Ex Mvsæo Hvthii (Library of Henry Huth, 1815- 1878, banker and prominent bibliophile, settled in London, member of the famous Roxburghe Club). 19th century fine calf binding signed by the London bookbinder F.[Francis] Bedford (1799-1883) with elaborate gold tooling on the spine, roll on the squares and gilt edges.
