Joseph Barré (1692-1764), French historian, Chancellor of the University of Paris between 1744 and the year of his death. Illustrated edition with an engraved title, a portrait of the dedicatee, Frederick Augustus II of Saxony, King of Poland, a fold-out map of Germany (volume I) and two fold-out maps (volumes II and IV). Slight moisture stains (from the tide) on the endpapers and title of volume I; some wormholes on the outer margin of about 25 leaves towards the end, in volume V. Otherwise, a very clean copy with large margins (carminated edges). Unidentified heraldic ex-libris (probably marquis de Corbeau de Vaulserre), with motto “Nil Nisi Virtute”. Good period bindings, entirely in flecked sheepskin, retaining the original marbled paper endpapers. Brunet, I, col. 666. Cohen-de Ricci, col. 113/114.
