The translator was born in Minas Gerais in 1750 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1805. According to Borba de Moraes, he attended the University of Coimbra (1769-1777) where he obtained a doctorate in Mathematics. Returned to Lisbon in 1790, he was a professor at the Royal Naval Academy, for whose students the work (original by Englishman George Atwood) was published. In 1798 he was appointed governor of the Captaincy of Espírito Santo (Brazil). The copperplate prints represent XXVIII geometric figures or “propositions” discussed in the text. Engravings with slight foxing, the last one badly folded. For the rest, a slightly trimmed but clean copy. Recent full sheepskin binding, with patina and gold decoration in the manner of the period.
