First edition of one of the classic works of Portuguese poetry from the 16th century, according to many the one where Renaissance bucolicism acquires purest and clearest expression. Diogo Bernardes (ca. 1530-ca. 1594), a native of Ponte da Barca, accompanied King D. Sebastião on the tragic journey to Africa, having been captive and rescued only in 1581. He had a friendly relationship with Sá de Miranda and António Ferreira and his models are those of the Renaissance: Petrarch, Garcilaso, Tasso and the Latin classics. Wrong foliation from sheet 101 (wrongly numbered 111). Slightly trimmed volume (carmine edges), but clean. Ex-libris of Aucíndio Rodrigues da Silva.
