Sir Charles Stuart (Lord Stuart de Rothesay, 1779-1845) was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of H. British M. in Lisbon, member of the government of the Kingdom of Portugal during the Peninsular War and bearer of the Constitutional Charter granted by D. Pedro IV; Sir Charles was also ambassador in Paris (twice) and in St. Petersburg. Set consisting of 21 letters addressed to Sir George Cranfield Berkeley (1753-1818), Admiral of the British and Portuguese Armies and Commander of the Fleet at “Lisbon Station”, which protected the Portuguese coast and the Tagus bar during the Peninsular War, between 1810 and 1812. The letters, dated between June 1811 and July 1812, address a wide range of subjects of a political-military nature (10 letters with attachments or copies of other letters).
