XXXXVIII. [1748].- [40], 444 [i. é 442] p., 1 tabela desdobr.: 1 retrato, XVIII [i. é 20] gravuras desdobr.; 20 cm.- E.
José Fernandes Alpoim (1700-1765) was born in Viana do Castelo and in 1738 he traveled to Brazil where he became famous as an architect and military engineer, having reached the rank of brigadier. In Rio de Janeiro he taught in artillery and fortification courses for which he wrote two treatises: “Exame de Artilheiros” (Lisbon, 1744) and the present “Exame de Bombeiros”. The edition is illustrated with a portrait of Gomes Freire de Andrade (1685-1763), governor of Rio, to whom the work is dedicated, engraved by Olivarius Cor (Ernesto Soares, História, p. 180 and nº 500), an allegorical vignette at the beginning of the dedication and 20 engravings (19 leaflets), numbered from I to XVIII (from engravings II and XI there are two different proofs) by José Francisco Chaves (Ernesto Soares, História, p. 171). Particularly enigmatic is Figure XVII that presents the subscription: José Franc. Chaves fecit — Rio 1749. This last indication has led some historians and bibliographers to support the hypothesis that the engraving (and even the edition) may have been opened in Rio de Janeiro, a controversial claim that remains unproven to this day. The pagination has an error: da p. 372 moves to p. 375, without any gaps in the text or in the section. Copy a little trimmed, but clean, keeping all engravings fresh and well folded. Contemporary binding, full sheepskin, slightly worn, with traces of wormholes (without affecting the core), retaining the original endpapers, red label and four raised bands on the spine. Inocêncio, IV, p. 326. Borba de Moraes (1983), p. 25/26 (These two famous and rare works by Alpoym constitute a veritable “bibliographic puzzle”). Army Library, 324.

Damião de Góis (1502-1574), historian, diplomat and humanist, born in Alenquer, prominent figure of the Portuguese Renaissance, between 1523 and 1533, was secretary of the Portuguese Factory in Antwerp; from that date onwards, he devoted himself to his historical and literary works, living and corresponding with various humanists, including Erasmus of Rotterdam and Pietro Bembo; in 1548 he assumed the position of main guard of Torre do Tombo; he was persecuted by the Holy Office and was arrested for heresy in 1571. An important collection of texts published in Louvain shortly after the siege of this city, in which the author was involved, having been taken prisoner by the French army. The edition, without pagination, includes some of the texts that would lead the humanist to be arrested by the Inquisition in 1571. Ownership manuscript on the title page: “Letellier conseiller au grand conseil du roy”. This is most likely Michel Le Tellier (1603-1685) who was successively adviser to the Grand Conseil, procurator of the king in Châtelet (Paris), maître de requettes, intendant in Piedmont, secretary of state for war and chancellor-general of Louis XIV (1677). Complete copy (possibly missing the last blank page), with some old handwritten annotations (by Le Tellier?), but in general clean and with good margins. Entire sheepskin contemporary binding, a little worn, with new ties and missing the fly guards. Brunet, II, 1642 (ce recueil est assez recherché). Graesse, III, 102. Sabin, 27690.

Original edition, printed on heavyweight paper, in maximum folio format, of a sumptuous “party book” published on the occasion of the wedding of Louise-Elisabeth of France (1727-1759), eldest daughter of King Louis XV, with Infante Filipe, of Spain (1720-1765). The 12 typed sheets include a title page, with a large vignette with the coat of arms of the city of Paris, and the text with the description of the festivities, at the beginning of which is another large vignette (31x16 cm) representing Paris and the festivities on the Sena River. Then follow 13 copperplate prints (8 double and 5 full page), opened in copper plate by Jean-François Blondel, according to originals by himself, as well as by Salley, Rousset et Gabriel. The first part (p. 1 to 16) contains the description of the festivals in the city, as well as the fireworks; the second (p. 17 to 22) describes the gala that took place at the “Hotel de Ville” in Paris, on the night of the 30th to the 31st of August. The most spectacular engraving (planche IX) is, without a doubt, the one representing the “Veue générale des décorations, illuminations et feux d’artifice...”. Copy with slight browning and slight handling; small marginal tear in print VII, without lack of support; prints IX, XII and XIII with some imperfections along the folds; minor restoration on the back of the last print. Modern ex-libris by E. Mareuse. Contemporary binding, in full sheepskin, with some wear, a creased corner and some damage to the spine; peripheral gold ornamental border, with florets on the corners and circles on the squares. At the centre of both covers, the gold-engraved book stamps, with the coat of arms of the city of Paris. Keeps the original endpapers on marbled paper. Cohen (Livres à gravures), col. 149/150.
