Dell'unione del Regno di Portogallo, de Conestaggio, 1589
CONESTAGGIO, Girolamo Franchi di.- DELL' VNIONE | DEL REGNO DI | PORTOGALLO | Alla Corona di Castiglia. | ISTORIA | DEL SIG. IERONIMO DE | FRANCHI CONESTAGGIO | GENTILHVOMO GENOVESE.- In Genova: Apresso Girolamo Bartoli, 1589.- [22], 7, 412 p.; 20 cm.- E., This is probably the fourth edition of the most important work of Genoese diplomat and historian Jerónimo Conestaggio (†1635), by some attributed to D. João da Silva, 4th Count of Portalegre. Considered initially pro-Spanish, this did not prevent it from being banned in the court of Philip I (of Portugal). The work, which was quickly translated into German, French, Latin and Castilian, with several editions until the mid-seventeenth century, was now rehabilitated and is considered an objective and impartial account of the events that led to the loss of independence from Portugal in 1580. As for authorship, we should consult the article published by Giacinto Manuppela, in the International Bulletin of Luso-Brazilian Bibliography (Lisbon: F.C.G., 1960. Vol. I, number three, p. 352). Foliation errors in leaves 133 (127), 134 (154) and 141 (133). A slightly cropped specimen, with severe support failure (restored) on the title page, affecting the last three letters of the word GENOVESE, as well as some of the xylographies and the manuscript possession of the time. Some books slightly browned, but in general a solid and complete specimen. Entire flexible parchment contemporary binding, slightly handled, with new endpapers. Palau, 313372. Duarte de Sousa, 25.

De Gloria Libri V, de D. Jerónimo Osório, 1552
OSÓRIO, Jerónimo.- HIERONYMI | OSORII LVSITANI | DE GLORIA | LIBRI V. | AD IOANNEM TERTIVM | LVSITANVM REGEM. | [gravura xilográfica].- Florentiae: Apud Laurentium Torrentinum, MDLII [1552].- 246 p.; 22 cm.- E., Second edition of one of the most important texts of the great humanist (1506-1580) who would become the last bishop of Silves (1564-1577) and the first of the renewed diocese of the Algarve in Faro (1577-1580). The work, divided into five books, initially published in Coimbra (1549), discusses some of the great issues that worried humanists in the second half of the sixteenth century. The text came to achieve great success throughout Europe, having been reprinted, at least 13 times still in the author's life (recently reissued text, with critical importance, by João Nunes Torrão, Lisbon, Colibri, 2006). Slightly cropped specimen (gilt edges), but clean, particularly notable for presenting several inscriptions and possession marks. In the second free endpaper, two registrations signed by António Augusto Teixeira de Vasconcelos (1816-1878): one purchased, dated Paris, 1860; another offered to Miguel Osório de Castro Cabral; on the free endpaper the bookplate of Miguel Osório de Alarcão Albuquerque. Stamp of Quinta das Lágrimas on the title page (repeated on the outside margin of p. 17) and the heraldic white seal of the recipient of the offer; on the verse (blank), an extensive biographical annotation in French, about the author, in ancient letters, possibly from the seventeenth century. Entire sheepskin binding, probably a 17th-century school prize (Plessis-Sorbonne College in Paris?), with a semée of fleur-de-lis on covers and spine. At the centre of both covers, a large oval vegetalist tool, with central reserve filled with three fleur-de-lis. The two pastedowns on marbled paper should have been added in the 19th century, missing their free endpapers. Edition not mentioned in the bibliographies consulted, including in the Library of King D. Manuel II of Portugal.

An illustrated edition with a frontispiece engraved next to the front page and 39 numbered copperplate engravings, of which four are foldable (the prints of this copy are not coloured). Slightly disjointed and cropped specimen, with sometimes deep wormholes, next to the backbone(near the upper and lower margins) and on the lower margin which, however, do not affect the text or engraved area of the prints. It is, however, complete and clean. An entire sheepskin 19th-century binding, worn with marbled edges. Brunet, II, col. 963. Nissen, BBI, 590.

Rumpf's work, which came to blind in 1670, consisting of an important survey of the flora of the Moluccas archipelago (especially the island of Amboina, where the author lived), would only be published 39 years after his death, at the initiative of the Dutch botanist Joannes Burman (1707-1780). The edition, bilingual in Latin and Dutch, consists of six parts and a folio format supplement, each with two front pages, containing 696 copperplate engravings (+ 3 with duplicate numbering), representing mainly plants, in addition to na allegorical frontispiece, a portrait of the author and the other of Burman.
Presents the following internal organization: 1 - Watercoloured title, inscribed in an oval inserted in a renassaince cartouche, with vegetalist motifs exhibiting at the top, the Saint James Cross on traditional scallop: Compremisso [sic] | da Irmandade das | Almas do Purgato | rio. | Da Villa de | Palmella. 1604 (p. 1); 2 - Examination visa of the Corregeor and ombudsman of the Comarca José Pedro Bayma de Barros, dated Septúbal, March 28, 1774 (p. 2); 3 - Title developed, followed by Preface (p. 3, 4 and 5, p. 6 blank); 4 - Chapter I: Spiritual alms... (p. 7); 5 - Chapter II: From Monday masses... (p. 8); 6 - Chapter III: From the masses of the month... (p. 9 and 10); 7 - Chapter IIII: Of the Suffrage... (p. 11 and 12); 8 - Chapter V: From the robes... (p. 13 and 14); 9 - Chapter VI: From the time you will be required to confess... (p. 15 and 16); 10 - Chapter VII: How to welcome the Brothers... (p. 17 and 18); 10 - Chapter VIII: From the day the election will be made... (p. 19 to 23); 11 - Chapter IX: How to welcome the Confreres... (p. 24); 12 - Chapter X: Provision (transcribe the royal provision of Philip III as governor and perpetual administrator of the master's and cavalry of the Order of Saint James); includes the closing term (Manoel de Paiva Cardozo did so in Lixª. on January 21, 1605) and a visa by visitors to the Order of Palmella on March 28, 1605; in the end, in three very faded lines, another visa at a visit, by the visitator of the Order Ferraz (p. 25 and 26). The devotion of the souls of Purgatory is very old and integrates into the worship of the deceased, transversal to all cultures and societies. But it was above all from the Counter-Reformation and the Council of Trent that the Catholic Church boosted its practice, with the brotherhoods of souls being, which from then on proliferated among us, their associative and solidarity expression, while the alminhas represent the corresponding most popular artistic aspect. Text entirely red calibrated, sometimes a little faded, ornamented with 11 watercolour and gouache decorated initials (?). All pages, from the second leaf, are square wrapped in five red parallel lines. The preface and eight chapters are toped with elegant red caligraphy vignettes (all different). The document was recently the subject of deep and full professional restoration, and it was possible to retain part of the green silk binding cover, as well as the two (original?) metal clasps.
