Dell'unione del Regno di Portogallo, de Conestaggio, 1589 CONESTAGGIO, Girolamo Franchi di.- DELL' VNIONE | DEL REGNO DI | PORTOGALLO | Alla Corona di Castiglia. | ISTORIA | DEL SIG. IERONIMO DE | FRANCHI CONESTAGGIO | GENTILHVOMO GENOVESE.- In Genova: Apresso Girolamo Bartoli, 1589.- [22], 7, 412 p.; 20 cm.- E. This is probably the fourth edition of the most important work of Genoese diplomat and historian Jerónimo Conestaggio (†1635), by some attributed to D. João da Silva, 4th Count of Portalegre. Considered initially pro-Spanish, this did not prevent it from being banned in the court of Philip I (of Portugal). The work, which was quickly translated into German, French, Latin and Castilian, with several editions until the mid-seventeenth century, was now rehabilitated and is considered an objective and impartial account of the events that led to the loss of independence from Portugal in 1580. As for authorship, we should consult the article published by Giacinto Manuppela, in the International Bulletin of Luso-Brazilian Bibliography (Lisbon: F.C.G., 1960. Vol. I, number three, p. 352). Foliation errors in leaves 133 (127), 134 (154) and 141 (133). A slightly cropped specimen, with severe support failure (restored) on the title page, affecting the last three letters of the word GENOVESE, as well as some of the xylographies and the manuscript possession of the time. Some books slightly browned, but in general a solid and complete specimen. Entire flexible parchment contemporary binding, slightly handled, with new endpapers. Palau, 313372. Duarte de Sousa, 25.
