Vauban (1633-1707), French military architect, Marshal of France and adviser to Louis XIV, was known for the effectiveness of his attack strategy, notably in the temporary fortication he conceived (trenches and landfills) and used in the more than 50 sieges he participated. Original edition, posthumous, illustrated with 29 copplerplate folding prints. A specimen slightly handled with traces of moisture, but generally clean, preserving all the well-folded engravings. Entire rigid parchement contemporary binding with severe support failures in the front cover and spine.
