Medicine Incunabula
INCUNÁBULO DE MEDICINA.- [KETHAM, Johannes de].- EPILOGO EN MEDICINA Y CI | RUGIA CONBENIE[N]TE ALA SALUD [Fasciculus medicinae] .- Burgos: Juan de Burgos, 1495.- LXVIII f.: il.; 31 cm.- B. Exemplary work (incomplete) of one of the two editions published in Spain in 1495 of what is considered the first work of illustrated Medicine, originally printed in Venice, in 1491. Traditionally attributed to the German Johannes de Ketham, of whom one knows only that he practiced medicine in Vienna in the second half of the 15th century, the edition consists of a collection of texts by several authors, including the Portuguese physician Vasco de Taranta (active Between 1383 and 1418), who wrote about the plague, and also the Scottish Michael SCOTUS (ca. 1175-1232), mathematician and translator of Averrois. Interestingly, it does not include any text from Johannes Ketham himself. Entirely composed of two-column Gothic characters, the volume opens with a page in which the centre apears the engraved title on the dotted Bottom (cribblé); On the back a "Tabula primera de la urinas " (first illustration), followed by the prologue (F. a2r to a4r.), illustrated with a large initial vignette. The nine texts or treaties deal with very diversified themes, namely, "de las urine (I) ", "de la flebotomia o sangrias (II) ", "de los XII signos (III) ", "de las dolencias de las mugeres (IV) ", de la cirugia de las llagas & unguentos, de todas las dolencias & enfermedades (VI)", "de la peste (VII)", "de la phisionomia (VIII)" e "de la generacion o formacion de la criatura (IX)". The volume, unbound and very handled, has numerous imperfections and flaws, the most serious being the following: Four leaves are missing: xxvi, XXVII, xxviii and XXIX; first leaf is very handled, with numerous notes of the time on the front and loss of support, partially affecting the engraving of the back; The two main illustrations (double leaf inserts): XIIII and XXV (female and male anatomies respectively) with loss of the upper half; Two leaves (XVII and XXXXII) with severe loss of support and text; Outer margin of the first 30 leaves are gnawed, without prejudice to the text; Other defects of difficult discrimination. Apart the great vignette of the prologue and the "Tabula de las urinas " (back of the first leaf), still retains two illustrations of full page: On the back of Leaf XI and back of the leaf xxxii. Interior wrapped in modern protective alkaline card case. Goff, K18; 246 Haebler. Pellechet, 4585. Incunables en libraries Españolas, 3410.

The third Incunabula edition of two important texts of the 12th century Arabic medicine (the two previous editions, both from Venice, date back to 1490 and 1496) that only reached our days by the present Latin translation and, still, from the version in Hebrew. The first text, known as Theizir (Teisir or Taisir), authored by Ibn Zuhr Abd al-Malik Abu Marwan, Avenzohar (or Abenzoar), physician and surgeon, born in Seville, describes for the first time an experimental tracheotomy (in a goat). The first home page contains only two lines: Abhumeron Abynzoar | Colliget Auerrois. The text begins on the front of the second sheet (incipit liber Theizir dahalmodana vahaltadabir, cui [ius] est interpretatio rectiatio Medicationis & Regiminis editus in Arabico a perfecto Viro abymeron Abynzoar) extending through three books, an antidotarium and A tabula (f. a2r to g6v.). The second part of the volume, beginning in the Folio h1r. (Incipit liber de medicifrom auerroys, qui dicitur colliget: & totalis liber iste continet libros septe [m] partiales) is filled with a collection of texts of the great Abu L-Walid ' Amad ibn Muhammad ibn Rušd, commonly known as Averróis, a natural of Cordoba, Contemporary and disciple of the first, developing in seven books and a final Tabula (f. h1r. A s3v.). Edition of the responsibility of Hieronymus Surianus (ca. 1458-1502) fully composed in Roundabout Gothic characters, with imposition of the text to two columns. In the back of the R2 folio an explicit one that includes the Codex: Impressum Venetijs per magistrum otinum Papiensem de Luna. Anno Domini nostri Iesu Christi. Mr. Mccccxcvij. Decimo Kalendas Ianuarias. Regnante incluyto Prince Augustino Barbadico. At the end (F. S1v.), the Registrum, through which the integrity of the specimen can be verified. The volume, handled and unbound (preserves intact the original seam), but full of text and recoverable (it lacks only the last blank sheet: F. S2), presents some imperfections, being the most severe in the last three leaves, stained and with Damaged margins, slightly affecting the text and the current title (only on the last sheet). Slightly generalized stains, without impairing reading; Some handwritten annotations on the back of sheets A1 and G6; Somewhat fragile paper. Interior wrapped in modern protective alkaline card case. Hain, 2188. Proctor, 5607. Bibliotheca Osleriana, 495. The incunabula of Portuguese libraries, 195 (BPMP INC. 44).

Important collection of prints
ROGERS, Charles.- A collection of prints in imitation of drawings. To which are annexed lives of their authors.- London: printed by J. Nichols, 1778.- 2 vols.: il.; 52 cm.- E. Charles Rogers (1711-1784), a learned English collector and patron of art, hired the best engravers of the time, including Bartolozzi, Basire and Ryland, to reproduce, with the most appropriate engraving techniques, not only his collection of drawings, but also those of other collectors: "That these prints may be faithful imitations, they are engraved the same way as, as well as the same size, as the originals are drawn; and printed, as nearly as possible, in the same colours". Among the artists represented are Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Caravaggio, Correggio, Poussin, Boucher, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, etc. The collation of each of the volumes is as follows: vol. I - [6], VI, 217, [3] p .: il .; vol. II - [4], 246 p .: il. Each one includes an index that, however, is not very reliable. Altogether, the two volumes reproduce in 105 pages more than a hundred works of art in engraved prints, largely dotted, sepia, bisque, gray and gray-green (five of them are double prints). The edition is printed on high quality paper. Copy with nine prints missing in the first volume and five prints missing in the second volume (Guercino's two prints, which should follow page 116 are bound between pages 84 and 85 of the first volume).
