A history of the Brazil; comprising its geography, commerce, colonization, aboriginal inhabitants, &c. &c. &c.- London: published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821.- XXIII, 522, [1] p.: il.; 27 cm.- E. The work by Henderson is an adaptation of Ayres do Casal's Chorography and is illustrated with 28 lithographs and two maps according to drawings of the author, «d'après nature». It also includes an extensive «list of subscribers» (p. XV a XXIII). Copy lacking front cover and preliminary leaf [a4, (“Notice to the reader”, p. VII with blank back)] and first engraving “John VI and his attendants” that should be near the front cover. It has, however, the remaining 29 engravings, 27 lithographs and 2 maps according to the drawings of the author, «d'après nature», including the rare lithograph No 23 in the index, “A Brazilian sesta, or afternoon nap”. Copy not trimmed with slight acidity; Folding map of Brazil with poor restoration on the back. Ex-libris on the back cover: Metropolitan Borough of Islington, Public Libraries; CANCELLED stamp on page [III]. Simple binding (of the time?) with damaged canvas spine. Leather half-binding of the time. Although incomplete, the copy is part of a remarkable iconographic set of the Brazilian colonial period. Sabin, 31314. Borba de Moraes, p. 397. Bosch, 328. [ca. 1840].- 518, [6] p.: 14 gravuras; 26 cm.- E. Original edition, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece (title page vignette) and 14 intaglio (taille-douce) engravings. The above title was quite shortened. Trimmed copy slightly handled and with light stains; marginal and minor traces of worm work. It is, however, complete and solid. Handwritten ownership on the fly guard: David Adams Windsor, Dudley. Fatigued and entire calf binding of the time.

A working copy with several faults and imperfetions, consisting of volumes I (Juifs et Chrétiens Catholiques), II (Catholiques Romains), VI (Peuples Idolâtres), VII ([première partie] Peuples Idolâtres), VII ([deuxième partie] Peuples Idolâtres) e XII (second des Superstitions). The set has numerous faults and imperfections, difficult to discriminate. The most serious and visible are the following: Volume I (disjointed): includes 27 full page engraving (frontispiece + 26 engravings accordingto index), lacking engravings 4, 17, 21, 22 and 28 (all double), deep worm cut affecting the last 12 leaves and 3 engravings), slight watertide stain in the upper third; volume II: prserves all the 33 engravings (5 double), but the 5 first ones are dameged by watertide stains worm cuts, the last 20 leaves and the 2 engravings (remaining engravings, clean, including 3 double); volume VI (no stains or cuts: lacking 7 engravings of the 27 that should contain (3, 5, 6, 13, 19, 23 and 26); volume VII (1st part): complete with the 44 engravings, but about half of the volume and engravings damaged by heavy stains of fungi and worm cuts; volume VII (2nd part): complete with the 33 engravings, clean and with no cuts; volume XII: complete with the 2 engravings, worm cut on the lower margin of the first half and heavy watertide stain and fungi on the second half. Fine entire racinée calf bindings of the time with smooth spines.

According to Innocent (V, p. 170) this is a work of great erudition and its author reveals great studies and indepth knowledge of antiquities. The two first volumes have the following collation: I - [8], 566, [38] p.; II - [8], 519, [1] p. The first volume presents (on the back of the third folio) a beautiful intaglio (taille-douce) portrait of St. Benedict. The second volume, printed by Manuel de Carvalho, includes an alphabetical catalogue of the coats of arms of the Kingdom's nobility, comprising 310 families. A slightly trimmed copy with some acidity but complete and solid, preserving the rare portrait. Slightly fatigued and entire calf 20th century bindings with gold closed houses on the spines. Engravings 13 and 61 (separately) are to be found in the end, before page 391. The total of engravings is 181, 84 printed near the text and the remaining separately, most of them folding-out. Copy bearing several stamps of French Company of decoration (all the egravings are stamped). Slight handling and acidity; watertide stain (or fat?) affecting the last 12 engravings and 30 final leaves. A 20th century entire calf and solid binding without any gold engraving.

The second volume contains 87 of the 88 hand-coloured engravings (engraving 23 is missing); the third volume is complete with 70 engravings but has two worm holes that run through the entire volume; the fourth volume, very incomplete, only includes 19 engravings of 60 (?) that should contain. The total number of engravings is thus of 176 (the total engravings of the four volumes is 298). The colouring is poor and irregular. Entire calf binding of the 20th century.

Classic work that, although from a scientific point of view does not leave up to its fame, is particularly appreciated due to its appealing engravings that usually present. Set composse of the following volumes. Volumes I to IX: Théorie de la Terre & Introduction à l’Histoire des Minéraux (17 engravings and 2 folding maps); volumes X to XI: Suite à l’Histoire Naturelle de l’Homme (6 engravings); volumes XII to XIII: Les Époques de la Nature (6 engravings and 2 foding maps); [volume XIV]: Tables de matières... (not illustrated); volumes XV to XXX: Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (231 engravings); volumes XXXI to XLI: Histoire des Animaux Quadrupèdes (306 engravings); volumes XLII to XLIII: Histoire Naturelle des Minéraux (not illustrated). The numbering of the volumes follows the numbering of the labels of the bindings. However, we believe that volume IV (Table des matières) with the wrong label (oiseaux) should correspond to a general index. Engravings should total 567 plus 6 folding maps. As the work has no índex of engravings thus making collation difficult, the set is sold in accordance to the conditions described. Entire racinée calf bindings of the time, fatigued, lacking some labels and presenting at the top of spines the monogram RJ. All volumes present two English heraldic ex-libris: Gen. Hon. Robert Taylor and Marquess of Headford.

The collation of the four volumes is as follows: [6], 432 p.: 4 engravings, 1 folding map; II - [2], 381, [79] p.: 3 folding engravings; III - [2], 512 p.: [lacking 3 folding engravings].; IV - [2], 388, [147, 1 brochure] p.: 5 folding engravings. Ths is also illusrated with 15 folding intaglio (taill-douce) engravings, mainly representing views of squares in Africa and India, particularly Goa, Daman, Diu, Chaul, Bassein, Quiloa, Sofala, Mangalor, etc. It also includes a large world map with the achievements and discoveries of the Portuguese. Copy slightly trimmed with slight acidity and lack of three engravings that volume III should contain. Some misfolded engravings with occasional tears but no lack of support. The edition includes 18 unpublished xaverian letters, five addressed to king D. João III of Portugal, three to Father Simão Rodrigues de Azevedo (founder of the Company) and the remaining to several recipients. Slightly dusty copy with slight acidity. On the back cover features the following Ex-libris: Ad usum scriptorum Societatis Jesu. Prov. Angl. Entire vellum binding of the time. Sommervogel does not mention this edition.

Jean-François de La Harpe (1739-1803), educator, literary critic, writer and French Aademic, was a friend of Voltaire. The work, which obtained great popularity, is a compilation of texts by various authors. A set lacking the bigger atlas that should contain the maps. The first 21 volumes have 76 engravings, numbered from 1 to 82, therefore missing 6. The remaining 11 volumes retain 20 engravings of which 4 are folding maps but only the first 6 are numbered, so verification is difficult. On the last volume the following final pages of the indexes are sillt missing: I to IV and XXV to XLVIII. Some water tide stains on volume II and marginal ones on volumes III, XIV, XV and XXVIII. Some volumes with dusty and irregular margins. A brochure copy not trimmed, plain paper coverings lined, exactly the way it was published. Brunet, III, col. 771.
