In front of Folio 243 presents the following colofon: Finis Laus Deo. 6 die Aprillis, 1588. Apparently the chapters 103 and 104, should skip, whicho were replaced by 2 blank leaves (f. 220 and 221), consisting the chapter 103 of the notes and final additions. This failure may indicate that it is a copy coeva. The title of count of Sabugal was established by Philip I, on 20 February 1582, to grace his State Councilor Duarte de Castelo Branco, page of King D. João III, Ambassador to Castile, bailiff-major of the Kingdom, vedor da Fazenda (the Royal House Exchequer) and Lord of the Majorat of Montalvão. D. Duarte accompanied the King D. Sebastian I in the ill-fated adventure of Ksar el-Kebir where he was made captive and having been rescued in Exchange for money. See Paulo Leitão Batista: http://capeiaarraiana.pt/2011/08/09/os-condes-do-sabugal (consulted 15 November 16). Volume very well maintained, just with slight acidity, 19th century entire calf binding, with dry decoration on the spine and plans. Provenence: Catálogo [do leilão] da livraria do fallecido distincto bibliographo e bibliophilo José Maria Nepomuceno... redigido por Luiz Trindade; under direction of Francisco Arthur da Silva. ANTÓNIO CAETANO DE SOUSA - 1674-1759
Genealogical history of the Royal House of Portugal
SOUSA, D. António Caetano de. - Genealogical History of the Royal House of Portugal, from its origins to the present, with the ilustres families, which descended from the Kings, and of the most Serene Dukes of Braganza .- Western Lisbon: In the Tipography of Joseph Antonio da Sylva, 1735-1749-20 vols.: il.; 29 cm.- E. Monumental work, can be considered a general history of the Kingdom, as varied are the information it contains. Also the evidence they present are of undeniable interest since transcribe documents missing in the meantime. The copy complies exactly with the description that is given by Inocêncio (I, p. 101): the first 12 volumes of the history are bound in 13; followed by the 6 proof volumes and the volume of index. The first volume includes only the known allegorical frontispiece, engraved by Rochefort according to Vieira Lusitano's original but not the portrait of the author. Volume IV contains the engravings of the royal seals, medals and coins minted in Portugal since the beginning of the monarchy. All volumes show one or two knife cuts (ranging from between 12 to 15 dimension cm., per ± 5 to 15 mm.) to save the ownership of the manuscript of the time. History Volumes II, VIII and X with missing guards; tear with no lacking of support in the two first leaves of volume I of the Proof; occasional and rare minor mothe cuts. Moreover, a very clean copy with large margins, entire calf bindings of the time, identical, with gilt closed houses on the spines; some worn plans. Samodães, 3241. Ameal, 2277.
