A Manuscript MANUSCRIPT. CASTELO-BRANCO, family.-[Descent and lineage of Castello-Branco].-16th Century (1588).-1 vol. (p. 522); 33 cm.- E. One handwritten 16th century Codex, in carefully calligraphed letter, with Gothic fully readable reminiscences. Consists of 261 leaves (and a guard), with a total of 522 pages, of which 11 white. The volume presents the following structure: Tauoada das linhagens com que os da familia de castelbranco estão liados [sic] que se neste liuro apontam (f. 1 and fr. of f. 2, v. blank); Tauoada dos Capos deste liuro (f. 3 to 7); blank follios 8 to 10 ; dedication: Ao Illustrissimo sñor Don Duarte de Castelbrco Conde do Sabugal, senhor das villas de Santa Cruz, Lanhoso, Çimfães, Sinde, & Azere, Meirinho Moor do Reinos de Portugal do Conselho do estado de S. Mgde. e seu Veador da Fazenda nelles. (f. 11, 12, 13 and fr. of f. 14); Ao leitor aduertencias (fr. and v. of f. 14); Autores & Documentos que neste Lo. se alegão de que se tirou a historia delle. (fr. of f. 14 and f. 15 and 16); [beginning of the text]: Capo. Iº das callidades & antiguidade da fidalguia da linhagem des castelbrãco & da origem deste apellido. (f. 17 to fr. of f. 243, v. blank); Annotaçoes & Addições A Diversos luguares deste liuro. (f. 244 to fr. of f. 261, v. with 19th Century notes). In front of Folio 243 presents the following colofon: Finis Laus Deo. 6 die Aprillis, 1588. Apparently the chapters 103 and 104, should skip, whicho were replaced by 2 blank leaves (f. 220 and 221), consisting the chapter 103 of the notes and final additions. This failure may indicate that it is a copy coeva. The title of count of Sabugal was established by Philip I, on 20 February 1582, to grace his State Councilor Duarte de Castelo Branco, page of King D. João III, Ambassador to Castile, bailiff-major of the Kingdom, vedor da Fazenda (the Royal House Exchequer) and Lord of the Majorat of Montalvão. D. Duarte accompanied the King D. Sebastian I in the ill-fated adventure of Ksar el-Kebir where he was made captive and having been rescued in Exchange for money. See Paulo Leitão Batista: http://capeiaarraiana.pt/2011/08/09/os-condes-do-sabugal (consulted 15 November 16). Volume very well maintained, just with slight acidity, 19th century entire calf binding, with dry decoration on the spine and plans. Provenence: Catálogo [do leilão] da livraria do fallecido distincto bibliographo e bibliophilo José Maria Nepomuceno... redigido por Luiz Trindade; under direction of Francisco Arthur da Silva.
