The Kingdom's Chief Officer of Arms Regiment of D. Manuel I, King of Portugal Document on parchment, consisting of two line sewn and joint bifolios containing royal instructions addressed to D. Álvaro da Costa (c. 1470-1540), wardrobe, Counsellor and Chamberlain of King Manuel I, who was also alcaide-mor (Town Magistrate) of Crato, diplomat and representative of the King (by proxy) on His marriage with the Infanta D. Leonor of Spain. Coeval copy of the license with the text of the 1st Regiment, without the additions of 1508. Well-kept document, showing only the outside of the first bifolio, a bit dusty and occasional marginal ink minor stains. Unsigned manuscript, dating from Abrantes, July 1, 1507.

Royal Charter by D. Henrique I, Cardinal-King of Portugal (1512-1580) on the redemption of the captives of the Battle of Alcazar near the town of Ksar-el-Kebir 16th century document (1578). Letter by D. Henrique I (King of Portugal, 1578-1580) addressed to D. Rodrigo de Meneses, of the Royal Council, informing him of the arrival of a letter from representatives of the gentry captives in Fez. Asking him to take account of the outcome of the due diligence that was commissioned by the King as to the rescue of these Noblemen and pass the good reception of His letter. Hybrid cursive script of humanist base with cursive Gothic elements. Upper third of the bifolio (sheets of paper) with strong stain, allowing, however the full reading (low weight thin paper). Autograph signature: Rey (King). Keeps the sheet stamp with the coat of arms of Portugal. Document dated from Lisbon, November 7, 1578.

Genealogical history of the Portuguese Royal House (1735-1749) D. António Caetano de Sousa (1674-1759), religious Theatine, historian, bibliographer and genealogist, was a renowned member of the Royal Academy of Portuguese History. His main work, the Genealogical History, can be considered a general history of the Kingdom, as varied are the information it contains. The Provas (Proofs) also present undeniable interest, since, they transcribe documents that are missing. The copy matches exactly with the description of Inocêncio Francisco da Silva, in his Bibliographical Dictionary, namely: the first 12 volumes of history are bound in 13 (volume XII consists of two parts); the following are the Index and the six ones of Provas. The entire calf bindings of the time retain the original guards but they are not all exactly the same. Bindings a little fatigued, especially those of the three first volumes of history, showing some traces of bookworm, including the first and last leaves, next to the fold and the guards. Volume IX of the History with some stains on the upper margin of the first 10 leaves.

Portuguese Usages One of the three highly successful collections that were published in the mid-19th century in Lisbon. Assembly consisting of 40 lithographs hand coloured, numbered from 1 to 40, by and of the workshop of João Palhares. Some acidity and handling, especially in the first engraving. Half Morocco binding of the time, a little fatigued and almost loose.

A History of Madeira by William Combe The original edition, published without the author's name, illustrated with a label on the cover page and 27 hand coloured aquatints, depicting with some ingenuity and humour, the usages of Madeira. Random slight stains (sometimes by the fold); rare smaller traces of paint. In addition, a clean copy, keeping the colourful engravings very fresh. Fresh entire calf binding of simple execution.

The Marquis of Mantua Brochure published without indication of place, printer or date, but probably printed in Spain, in the second half of the 17th century. Fully written in two columns and in Castilian, presents, on the cover, a woodcut depicting a Knight. Entire leather fresh binding, with blind-embossed borders and garnishing on the folders.

Princess Magalona Spanish text of an anonymous French Cavalry novel that came to great success during the 15th century, judging by the many versions and translations known up to date. Copy with some acidity, but clean and untrimmed, keeping very fresh the woodcut of Princess Magalona, on the cover page. The text, entirely written in Spanish, follows the 1519 edition and has, in the end, Frei Manuel Coelho’s approval. Half Morocco violet binding, signed by the English binders Sangorski & Sutcliffe (2oth century).

FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES - 1746-1828

Los Desastres de la Guerra de Francisco Goya (1746-1828) / Francisco Goya’s War Disasters Sixth Edition complete set, as published by the editor, from the original copper plates today kept in the National's Chalcography of Madrid. The series, also known as the Estragos o desastres de la Guerra (Disasters or War Damages), was engraved between 1810 and 1815 and represents, with great realism, some of the most violent episodes of the Spanish war of independence that devastated the neighbouring country between 1808 and 1814. The album consists of a cover page and another with a short introduction and it is coated with its original canvas binding, lightly handled and followed by the 80 proof, high grammage paper printed. Some engravings show slight acidity and small stains.
