estadista britânico, governador colonial e diplomata, chefiou a embaixada à China com o objectivo de
estabelecer relações comerciais com este país. Segunda edição do relato da sua viagem, muito aumentada,
sobretudo nas ilustrações, tendo a primeira sido publicada apenas no ano anterior. A colação de cada um dos
tomos é a seguinte: tome premier: [4], CXXXVI, 311 p.; tome second: [4], 408 p.; tome troisième: [4], 414, [2]
p.; tome quatrième: [4], 380 p.; tome cinquième: [4], 350 p. O conjunto dos cinco tomos inclui 39 gravuras,
sendo um retrato do autor e um mapa, no primeiro tomo e três grandes mapas desdobráveis no final do quinto
tomo. Todas as gravuras, incluindo os mapas estão numeradas de I a XXXIX. Exemplar aparado, por vezes com
prejuízo das legendas de algumas gravuras, sobretudo as panorâmicas. Alguns cadernos levemente
desconjuntados; mapas finais mal dobrados e um destacado por rasgão, sem falta de suporte. Encontra-se,
contudo, completo e limpo. Encadernações da época, inteiras de carneira, um pouco cansadas, mas sólidas.

Georges Macartney (1737-1806), British statesman, colonial governor and diplomat, headed an embassy to China
with the aim to establishing trade relations with this country. Second edition of the account of his trip, quite
increased especially concerning the illustrations, having first been published just a year earlier. The collationof
each of the volumes is the following: tome premier: [4], CXXXVI, 311 p.; tome second: [4], 408 p.; tome
troisième: [4], 414, [2] p.; tome quatrième: [4], 380 p.; tome cinquième: [4], 350 p. The set of five volumes
includes 39 engravings of which a portrait of the author and a map are on the first volume and three large
folding maps at the end of the fifth volume. All the engravings, including the maps are numbered from I to
XXXIX. Trimmed copy sometimes at the expense of the subtitle of some engravings, especially panoramas. Some
signatures slightly disjointed; final maps badly folded and one tear-ripped but not lacking support. However, it
is complete and solid. Entire calf bindings of the time, fatigued but secured.

permaneceu seis anos no Canadá, onde estudou os índios iroqueses,
devendo-se-lhe também a descoberta do ginseng. Edição ilustrada com
14 gravuras a talhe-doce e um mapa desdobrável, representando,
sobretudo, vistas de praças de África e da India, nomeadamente Goa,
Damão, Diu, Chaul, Baçaim, Mombassa, Quiloa, Sofala, etc. Inclui ainda
diversas vinhetas alegóricas de grande qualidade. A colação dos dois
tomos é a seguinte: I - [6], XXIV, 616, [487, 1 br.] p.: 8 gravuras,

Father Lafitau (1681-1746), a Jesuit priest, scientist and missionary,
stayed six years in Canada where he studied the Iroquois Indians.
He also discovered ginseng. An illustrated edition with 14 intaglio
(taille-douce) engravings and a folding map , mainly depicting
views of squares in Africa and India, particularly Goa, Daman, Diu,
Chaul, Bassein, Mombassa, Quiloa, Sofala, etc. It also includes
several allegoric vignettes of fine quality. The collation of both
volumes is as follows: I - [6], XXIV, 616, [487, 1 brochure] p.: 8
engravings, 1 folding map; II - [2], 693, [87] p.: 6 engravings. Copy
