30 cm.- E. James Bruce (1730-1794), escritor, viajante e
explorador escocês que permaneceu cerca de 12 anos em
África reclamando para si a descoberta das nascentes do
Nilo, em deterimento de outros viajantes, nomeadamente
do missionário jesuíta português Jerónimo Lobo (1595-
1678). Oitavo e mais procurado tomo da segunda edição de
uma obra clássica, constituída por sete tomos, dos quais
este é o último e inclui todas as 79 gravuras e 3 mapas
desdobráveis dos restantes seis. Exemplar com manchas de
água (de maré) que afectam todas as gravuras, mapas e
folhas de texto, com maior ou menor intensidade.
Encontra-se contudo completo e sólido, conferindo pelo
respectivo índice. Ex-libris heráldico inglês: Earl of
Rosebery. Encadernação inteira de carneira, da época,
cansada.

Conjunto constituído pelos tomos II, III e IV desta obra
clássica na iconografia da moda e do traje. O segundo tomo
integra 87 das 88 gravuras, coloridas à mão, que devia
conter (falta a gravura 23); o terceiro tomo, 70 gravuras,
está completo, mas apresenta dois furos de traça que
atravessam todo o volume; o quarto tomo, muito
incompleto, apenas inclui 19 gravuras das 60 (?) que
deveria conter. O total de gravuras é assim de 176 (o total
de gravuras dos quatro tomos é de 298). O colorido é fraco
e irregular. Encadernações inteiras de carneira, do século XX.

A Set consisting of volumes II, III and IV of this classic work in
the iconography of fashion and costume. The second volume
contains 87 of the 88 hand-coloured engravings (engraving 23
is missing); the third volume is complete with 70 engravings
but has two worm holes that run through the entire volume;
the fourth volume, very incomplete, only includes 19
engravings of 60 (?) that should contain. The total number of
engravings is thus of 176 (the total engravings of the four
volumes is 298). The colouring is poor and irregular. Entire calf
binding of the 20th century.

stayed around for 12 years in Africa claiming the discovery of the
sources of the Nile in detriment of other travellers in particular the
Portuguese Jesuit Missionary Jerónimo Lobo (1595-1678).
