irlandês, visitou Portugal entre os anos de 1788 e 1790,
com o objectivo de estudar e registar em desenho os
monumentos e antiguidades do nosso país. A viagem foi
patrocinada por William Burton Conyngham, coleccionador,
antiquário e mecenas das artes. Edição original ilustrada com
24 gravuras a talhe-doce (não coloridas), representando
costumes, monumentos, antiguidades, inscrições e uma planta
de Lisboa. Estampa IX, com pequena mancha de cor (aguarela?).
De resto, um exemplar limpo e com boas margens. Ex-libris
estrangeiro heráldico, com as iniciais RC. Encadernação inteira
de vitela, da época, um pouco cansada. Duarte de Sousa, 511.

historiador romano. A“História Natural”, considerada sua obra magna, é
constituída por 37 livros. Edição muito cuidada, com grande aparato crítico,
publicada simultaneamente em Leiden e Roterdão. Cada um dos tomos, que
inclui uma portada diferente, gravada a talhe-doce, apresenta a seguinte
colação: tomus primus: [8], 838, [132] p.; tomos secundus: 917, [87] p.; tomus
tertius: [8], 838, [134] p. Os tomus I e III apresentam na guarda volante final,
uma curiosa inscrição manuscrita (pertence: M[ilegível] C. Duprez) indicando
que o exemplar foi adquirido em Paris em 19 de Maio de 1789. Boas
encadernações do final do século XVIII, inteiras de marroquim verde
calandrado, com cercaduras (grinaldas) nos planos, roda nas seixas e na
espessura das pastas; lombadas lisas, um pouco cansadas (com coifas
imperfeitas), com ferros neo-clássicos nos entre-nervos. Corte das folhas
dourado. Brunet (IV, col. 716): Belle édition et l’une des moins communes
de la collection des anciens Variorum.

James Murphy (1760-1814), Irish architect, visited Portugal between
the years of 1788 and 1790 with the purpose to study and record in
drawings the monuments and the antiquities of our country. The trip
was sponsored by William Burton Conyngham, collector, antique dealer
and patron of the arts. An original edition illustrated with 24 intaglio
(taille-douce) engravings (colourless), depicting usages, monuments,
antiquities, inscriptions and the plan of Lisbon. Print IX with small
patch of colour (watercolour?). Moreover, a clean copy with fine
margins. A heraldic foreign ex-libris with RC initials. Entire veal binding
of the time slightly faigued. Duarte de Sousa, 511. Foulché-Delbosc, 197A.

Roman historian, naturalista
and scientist. The “Natural
History”, considered his
masterpiece, consists of 37
books. A very prepared edition with extensive review,
published simoultaneously in Leiden and Rotterdam.
Each volume, with a different intaglio (taille-douce)
engraved title page, has the following collation: tomus
primus: [8], 838, [132] p.; tomos secundus: 917, [87] p.;
tomus tertius: [8], 838, [134] p. Volumes I and III show on
the last fly guard, a curious handwritten inscription
(belongs: M[unreadable] C. Duprez) indicating that the
copy was purchased in Paris on May 19th 1789. Fine
bindings of late 18th century, entire calendered green
Morocco, with bordures (garlands) on the plans, wheels
to the boards and in the thickness of the folders; smooth
spines, slightly faigued (with imperfect hoods), with neo-
classic irons between raised bands. Gilt leaf cutting.
