primeira edição data de 1788, obteve enorme sucesso até ao final do
século XIX. Baseando-se nos seus profundos conhecimentos, o autor
(1716-1795), notável numismata e arqueólogo, descreve através do seu
herói, a organização social, as leis, o governo, a arte, a música, a
religião, a filosofia e as antiguidades da Grécia Antiga, tendo
contribuido largamente para a difusão da cultura clássica grega. O
conjunto conserva o raro atlas (com data de 1789 e encadernação
diferente) que falta na maioria dos exemplares, por ser de maior
formato. O atlas, da segunda edição, apresenta a seguinte colação: XLII
p.: IV mapas, 27 gravuras (22 duplas). As gravuras, na sua maioria
mapas e plantas, encontram-se muito frescas. Encadernações da época,
inteiras de pele, calandrada nos planos, com as lombadas cansadas e
juntas fracas; corte das folhas marmoreado (a encadernação do atlas é
diferente).

The work, whose first edition dates from 1788, obtained huge
success by the end of the 19th century. Based on his deep
knowledge, the author, a remarkable numimatist and
archaeologist, describes through his hero, the social
organization, laws, Government, art, music, religion, philosophy
and the Antiquities of Ancient Greece, thus having contributed
largely to the spreading of classical Greek culture. The set
retain the rare Atlas (dated 1789 but with a different binding)
that lacks in most copies because of its greater format. The
second edition Atlas presents thefolowing collation: XLII p.: IV
maps, 27 engravings(22 pairs).
The engravings, mostly maps and plants, are very fresh.
Entire calf bindings of the time, calendered on the plans,
fatigued spines and weak joints; marbled leaf cutting
(different Atlas binding).

sem o nome do autor, constituída por um conjunto de 101 cartas,
escritas entre 1780 e 1795 que apresentam a seguintes distribuição por
volumes e países: vol. I (255 p.): The Low Countries and Germany (11
cartas), Italy (24 + 7), [France] Grande Chartreuse (5 cartas) e Saleve (2
cartas); vol. II (357 p.): Portugal (34 cartas) e Spain (18 cartas).
O segundo volume inicia a paginação na pág. 14 (com 5 páginas
preliminares inumeradas), mas os exemplares consultados apresentam
todos o mesmo erro. Exemplar com algumas manchas de acideze
manuseamento, sobretudo no segundo volume, revestido de modestas
encadernações em tela, cansadas, provavelmente da época.

A Londoner Edition published in the same year of the first
one, without the Author’s name, consisting of a set of 101
letters written between 1780 and 1795 with the following
distribution by countries and volumes: vol. I (255 p.):
The Low Countries and Germany (11 cartas), Italy (24 + 7),
[France] Grande Chartreuse (5 letters) and Saleve
(2 letters); vol. II (357 p.): Portugal (34 letters) and Spain
(18 letters). The second volume begins paging on page 14
(with 5 preliminary listed pages) but all the consulted
copies present the same error. A Copy lined with modest
and fatigued canvas bindings of the time with some
acidity and handling stains particularly in the second
volume.
