BOOK (THE) | of | Common Prayer | And Administration | of the | SACRAMENTS, | AND OTHER | RITES & CEREMONIES | Of the CHURCH, | According to the Use | of the | CHURCH of ENGLAND...- London: Printed by His Ma[ges]ties. Printers, MDCLXIX [1669].- [168] f.: 1 portada grav.; 32 cm. Junto com: THE | Psalter of Psalms | OF | DAVID, | After the translation of the Great | BIBLE, | Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in | CHURCHES.- In the Savoy Printed by the Assigns of John Bill and Christopher Barker, Anno Dom. 1672.- [106] f.; 32 cm.- E.
The Book of Common Prayer is the book of daily and Sunday prayers of the Anglican Church, whose original and definitive edition was published in 1549, during the reign of Edward VI. The present edition, which results from the reform implemented in 1662, includes the daily morning and afternoon prayers, Communion and the litany; It also includes prayers to accompany special services, namely Baptism, Confirmation, weddings, funeral services, prayers for the sick, etc., as well as various readings from the Old and New Testaments. Title page engraved, cropped, mirrored and with a fault in the upper left corner, with small loss of image. The copy (lightly handled, but complete) is especially notable because it was probably bound by the London bookbinder Samuel Mearne (1624-1683), for the royal couple Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza, featuring the crowned royal monogram, with two intertwined Cs (one inverted), engraved in gold on the covers (4) and on the spine, in the sections (6). In this regard, see: Database of Bookbindings British Library (https://www.bl.uk/catalogues/bookbindings/Results.aspx? SearchType=QuickSearch, acessed on February 2022). Provenance: armorial ex-libris of Alexander Duff, Duke of Fife (1849-1912) who married Princess Louise, daughter of the Duke of Wales, future King Edward VII, in 1889. Full sheepskin binding, a little worn, with loose joints, gilt edges and non-contemporary silk ties.

ANDRADE, Francisco de.- CRONICA | DO MVYTO AL- | TO E MUITO PODERO | SO REY DESTES REYNOS DE | Portugal dom Ioão o III. deste nome...- Impressa em Lisboa: por Iorge Rodriguez, 1613.- [19], 113, 134, 131, 155 f.; 27 cm.- E.
Francisco de Andrade (ca. 1540-1614), poet, historian and chronicler, born in Lisbon, was chief guard of the Torre do Tombo and chief chronicler of the Kingdom; As a poet he left us the epic poem “The First Siege of Diu” (Coimbra, 1589). The volume includes the four parts of the work, with independent foliation. Inocêncio only records 17 preliminary pages, of which the present copy has 19 (the section contains seven folios). Cropped copy, with slight browning and handling; ink stain at the foot of the title page; small central restoration on the verso of the last sheet. Contemporary binding, full sheepskin, a little worn, presenting, in the centre of both covers, the heraldic book stamp of D. Luis Francisco de Benavides Carrillo de Toledo (1608-1668), 3rd marquis of Caracena (1621), 5th marquis de Frómista and 3rd Count of Pinto, knight of the Order of Santiago (1621), governor of arms of the Netherlands (1656) and Burgundy (1659), captain general of the armadas of the Carreira de Indias, etc. In 1664, D. Luis took command of the Spanish forces in the conflict against Portugal, having suffered a heavy defeat in the Battle of Montes Claros, which became decisive and final in the War of Restoration. It is worth noting that the catalogue of the collection "Encuadernaciones heráldicas de la Biblioteca Lázaro Galdiano" (Madrid, 2008), records 26 very similar bindings (nº 120 to 145) and, probably, with the same heraldic tool. Inocêncio, II, p. 332. Afonso Lucas, 63. Arouca, A 351.

A work of great erudition by the friar Discalced Augustinian (1642-1729), born in Estremoz, whose secular name was Manuel Gomes Freire and was chronicler and vicar general of his Order. The first seven volumes are dedicated to Portugal, the eighth refers to Japan, China, Macau, Goa, Daman, Diu, Bassein (today Vasai), Chaul, Southwest Asia, Philippines, Mozambique, Angola, Morocco, etc. and the last two are almost entirely dedicated to Brazil, also including references to the Azores, Madeira, São Tomé and Príncipe and the Canary Islands. Contemporary, full sheepskin bindings, identical, with occasional damage, particularly on the turns. Inocêncio, I, p. 18. J. C. Rodrigues, 2187. Borba de Moraes, p. 766-767.
