PEDRO, D. (Conde de Barcelos).- NOBILIARIO | DEL CONDE DE BARCELOS | DON PEDRO | Hijo del Rey Don Dionis | de Portugal | Traduzido castigado y | con nuevas ilustraciones de varias notas | por Manuel de Faria y Sousa Cavallero | dela Orden de Christo i de | la Casa Real...- Madrid: Alonso de Paredes, 1646.- [26], 403 p., col. 404 a 725, [12, 1 br.] p.: 1 portada gravada; 30 cm.- E.
D. Pedro, Count of Barcelos (1287-1354), natural son of King D. Dinis I, a great figure of medieval peninsular culture. We are indebted to him for compiling the songs of Galician-Portuguese troubadours, the “Crónica geral de Espanha”, from 1344 and the “Livro de linhagens” which we find here in its second printed edition (the first was published in Rome in 1640 ). The present edition includes notes by João Batista Lavanha (p. 403 to col. 513), Marquis of Montebelo (col. 514 to 609), Álvaro Ferreira de Vera (col. 610 to 657) and Manuel de Faria e Sousa (col. 658 to 725). The frontispiece is copperplate printed and features an architectural framework, with two allegorical figures and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal (subscription: Petrus de Villafranca sculps.). The 13 preliminary pages between the engraving and the text contain: Licencias, fe de errata e summa de la tassa (f. 1); La approvacion del Señor don Geronimo Mascareñas... (f. 2); Warnings (f. 3f.); Praise (f. 3v. to f. 6v.); dedication Al Señor D. Francisco Antonio de Alarcon... (f. 7); Discurso de la Familia de los Ocañas Alarcones (f. 8); Prologo (f. 9 a 13). This is followed by paginated text in one column up to p. 403 and from here the numbering becomes two columns. On the verso of the O2 folio begin the tables (surnames, titles, manner houses, etc.) that occupy a total of six pages, followed by a last blank page. We think that sheet 2 (La aprovacion del Señor don Geronimo Mascareñas...), since it does not have a signature and is interspersed between signatures ¶1 and ¶2, could be a matter of a later insertion. Slightly cropped specimen, with slight handling and light browning; last four leaves with irregular outer margin; last leaf with marginal wormholes affecting two index letters. The cover retains good margins and some freshness. Contemporary binding, fully parchment, a little worn, but recoverable, missing the free endpapers(?), preserving the four original bindings. Inocêncio, VI, p. 373. Samodães, 2367. Palau, 133211.

Complete copy (with the rare final errata leaf) and with good margins, of one of the most beautiful books printed in Portugal in the 18th century, and certainly one of the most sought after. Little is known about the author (1755-1817), apart from having been horse riding instructor of the Picaria Real (art of horsemanship schooling), as he himself indicates on the title page. Inocêncio adds that some intended to attribute the work to the Marquis of Marialva, but this has not yet been confirmed. The 93 engravings, 22 of which are foldable, mainly represent horse attitudes in teaching and are opened on copper plate by various engravers, Fróis, Martini, Piedra, etc. (Ernesto Soares, História, 1076), according to originals by Joaquim Carneiro da Silva. The prince regent, future king D. João VI, is represented in engravings 21, 29, 53 and 59 (Ernesto Soares e Ferreira Lima, Dictionary of Iconography, 1549 B). It also includes two allusive vignettes at the beginning of books I and VI. Clean copy (possibly treated), with some wormholes (restored), mainly marginal ones, in about a third of the engravings, affecting the engraved part in four engravings (76, 86, 90 and 93); some text sheets also have small wormholes that, from page 389/390 onwards, sometimes reach the text, always without great extension. Recent binding, full sheepskin, with patina and gold decoration on the squares covers and smooth spine, in the manner of the time. Inocêncio, V, 386. Ameal, 108.

VASCONCELOS, Pe. Simão de, S.J.- CHRONICA | DA | COMPANHIA | DE | JESV | DO ESTADO DO BRASIL: | DO QVE OBRARÃO SEVS FILHOS | NESTA PARTE DO NOVO MVNDO | TOMO PRIMEIRO | DA ENTRADA DA | COMPANHIA DE JESV | NAS PARTES DO BRASIL | & | DOS FVNDAMENTOS QVE NELLAS | Lançârão, & continuàrão seus Religiosos em quanto alli trabalhou o Padre Manoel | da Nobrega...- Lisboa: Na Officina de Henrique Valente de Oliueira, 1663.- [12], 178, [185 a 188], 528, [12] p.: 1 frontispício gravado; 33 cm.- E.
First edition of one of the most beautiful productions of the Portuguese presses of the 1600s and a fundamental work for the history of Brazil (first and only volume published). In his introduction, Fr. Simão de Vasconcelos (1597-1671) proposes the theory that the Earthly Paradise would be located in Portuguese America. Although the licenses had been granted, between May 18, 1661 and November 7, 1662 (?), the apostolic visitor considered that such an assertion was contrary to the dogmas of the Catholic faith and demanded that such passage be suppressed. Thus, in all known copies the pagination jumps from p. 178 to 185. At the end, between pages 481 and 528 includes the Latin poem "De Beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria", by Fr. José de Anchieta who composed it «..quando esteve em refens entre Indios barbaros, com a ajuda da Virgem, escrevendo na praia em lugar de papel, que alli não tinha, nem tinta». The engraved frontispiece, which is missing from many examples, was recovered and mounted on a stub, with reinforcement on the inner margin, and features some small restorations. Several leaves with small restorations in the lower outer corner. Folio N4 (p. 103/104) with stain and tear poorly restored, but no lack of support. Otherwise, a clean and solid copy, slightly cropped, covered in full sheepskin binding, from the 20th century, with some wear, weak joints and damaged turn in at the top of the spine. Provenance: Lot 842 from the Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, October 1999 (the same copy). Borba de Moraes, p. 888. Sabin, 98651. Rodrigues, 2457. Inocêncio, VII, p. 286. Samodães, 3443. Arouca, V 51.
