Manuscript on parchment containing prayers, antiphons, and other short readings intended for the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours, according to the usage of the Carthusian Order or the Order of Saint Bruno. In the absence of a specific reference, the document must originate from the Charterhouse of Santa Maria Vallis Misericordiae, also known as the Charterhouse of Laveiras (founded in 1595 in Lisbon, but definitively established in Caxias in 1598/1603), since it contains a reference to Friar Simão Velho Barreto, prior of this convent between 1670 and 1678. At the beginning of the volume, a painted, coloured, and calligraphed face, framed by a Mannerist cartouche, with the following title: Colectanevm secvndvm vsv[m] & morem sacri Ordinis Cartusiensis. Scriptum à Patre Fratre Bernardo à D. Ioseph Mónacho eiusdem Ordinis. M. DC. LXX. V.; This is followed by a Latin prayer of praise to Our Lady of the Assumption (with an illustration engraved on a metallic sheet[?]), patron saint of the Order; the following six folios comprise the calendar, with references to specific devotions for each day of the year. The main text occupies the remaining 120 pages (plus three of supplements) and consists of prayers for the liturgical year relating to the "Proper of Time" and the "Proper of Saints". The text is calligraphed in black and red, with a small illuminated initial capital and three decorative "end-of-page" motifs. Ex-libris of the Bibliotheca de António Capucho. Contemporary binding, entirely green silk velvet, with gilt edges.
